Wendyb10 Posted March 14, 2018 #1 Share Posted March 14, 2018 Hi, I am going to NZ in November and am allergic to Sulfur. I know that the North island has Sulfur fumes but would like to know from those who have been, where I should not go. Thanks Wendyb10:confused:
pwake Posted March 15, 2018 #2 Share Posted March 15, 2018 Is your allergy to sulfonamide antibiotics? If this is the case, no need to worry. If you are allergic to elemental sulphur (sulfur) then it’s best to avoid Rotorua. Most people with sulfur allergies are allergic to the antibiotics, not the element. Embrace Posted March 15, 2018 #3 Share Posted March 15, 2018 Taupo is also geothermal and has sulphur - but not as much as Rotorua.
Rare MicCanberra Posted March 15, 2018 #4 Share Posted March 15, 2018 Hmm, Rotorua is easily missed by sight but definitely not by smell.
Embrace Posted March 15, 2018 #5 Share Posted March 15, 2018 Hmm, Rotorua is easily missed by sight but definitely not by smell. There's no escaping that 'rotten eggs' smell.
Kiwi_cruiser Posted March 15, 2018 #6 Share Posted March 15, 2018 Don't go to Rotorua or Taupo or anywhere in the middle of the North island of NZ. Also as you will be sailing past white island, which has a lots of sulfur. If I was you I would see if you still got time to cancel your cruise and get your money back. Rare OzKiwiJJ Posted March 15, 2018 #7 Share Posted March 15, 2018 As long as the OP stays indoors while the ship is near White Island I doubt she'll have a problem. I've never noticed any sulphur smell onboard when we're done the NZ runs. As pwake says, it very much depends as to which form of sulphur the OP is allergic to. I'm allergic to the antibiotics but have never had any problems in Rotorua, and I worked there 3-4 days a week for 8 years.
