HAL flight and Delta Comfort

I would chalk it up to just how complicated this stuff is. These people were talking about are in the business of booking cruises not Airline upgrades. That really is a Nuance that goes beyond what is reasonable to expect a reservationist for a cruise line to know about with 100% accuracy.

Here we are a bunch of us who are exposed to this information regularly and some among us are Reasonably confused between booking a higher class of service and thereby getting the Comfort seating and being unable to do an upgrade later if what you purchased originally was service via the basic economy fare. I fully expect many of the cruise reservationists to not catch that nuance. It just simply is too subtle to expect everyone to appreciate it, even if it seems like it's part of their job. It's like asking a cruise reservationist for some subtle details about when insurance will cover certain things and not others.

HAL got us on Delta, Venice to JFK to BWI for $284 next month. We then went directly to Delta and upgraded to Comfort seats for an additional $100 for first leg of trip.

You’ll need to check seating to see if the Comfort seats are available.

Wow you got a great deal. Congrats.

Bottom line (from HAL yesterday): you can't buy Comfort until the ticket is paid for. This can happen one of two ways; either wait for 50 days out, or switch the reservation to restricted and pay for it up front. This puts you into a no change, no cancel situation....
