flag fan Posted January 27, 2008 #876 Share Posted January 27, 2008 I'm convinced that when they have special guest judges that are going to use the design to sell themselves (like the Levis challenge this week) or wear themselves (like Tikki Barber or that ice skater or beauty queen in past seasons), the guest judge picks the winner with no real input from anyone else. After all, you can't expect Levis to sell something just because Michael Kors told them to. So the winner isn't necessarily the best, only the one that the special judge liked; if that judge has poor taste, so be it. I think the winners in these challenges are consistently the least "fashion forward" or interesting of all the winning designs. So, the Levis person was not looking for something totally new or original, but something that helped sell the brand by having big rivets all over it or red labels. I liked Sweet P's dress; it would serve Levis right if a rival company snatched up that design and sold it.

Curt Jerome Wild Posted January 31, 2008 #879 Share Posted January 31, 2008 Addressing a couple of things here... Very interesting... Something changed on the schedule (bravo decision) at the last minute last week, so that's why no show this week... BUT, dun, dun, dun..... Interesting: Next Week Feb. 6th is the WWE show. Then Feb 8th is the live finalist runway collections at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in NYC. So, soon after that day, we'll know who got to show. Therefore, there could be 4 finalists and a "decoy" at the show. Or they could eliminate two people at once before that... It shall be interesting, and as soon as I can get my hands on any pics from that day, I'll post them here...

I liked Sweet P's dress; it would serve Levis right if a rival company snatched up that design and sold it. Then, I've been meaning to address this for a long time, but keep forgetting.:o But since it's been brought up, I thought I'd let you know what a couple of my "insiders" have told me. IF it is just a guest designer judge, then all judges are equal in opinions. So, those are more equal across the board. IF it is any challenge where the guest judge is actually going to WEAR or SELL the winning design, then that judge has more power directly and indirectly. Project Runway cannot force them to wear or sell anything they want, so they work with them and give them a bit of "veto" power. For example, as far as the other judges scores, Kevin was the actual "winner" of the Tiki Barber challenge. (allegedly;) - legalese, read between the lines) They thought it was the best outfit, and the only one that had a good forward thinking viewpoint. So, even though Tiki told them in the design room that he was not "afraid of color"; he said that shirt was too bright and he would not wear that on TV. So, Jack wins by default, because Tiki felt okay wearing that. Same thing with Miss USA last year. Slightly different (but the same) with Sara Jessica Parker and especially Levis this year. They are actually selling and marketing the "winning" item, so they had final say and "veto" power for the winners. Sweet Ps was actually the favorite as far as the judges and they were thinking it had the most widespread "sellability" factor. But, it was "denim" and because of the wacko miscommunications of judging criteria, it was not "Levi's denim" enough... (didn't use any of the Levi's "iconic" features - thanks producers for making that clear to all of the designers for the challenge - Oh, THAT's what "iconic" was supposed to mean in this challenge!?!?!) So on these kind of weeks, it's really about who are the "top" as those are all possible winners. Then guest judge has final say. Other slightly sneaky thing is... There is no rule or way to stop a guest judge from "scoring" their choice as 100% all across the board, and everything else Zeros. No matter what the other judges score, this will artifically "inflate" the guest judges choice to the top. Would the fabulous producers ever admit that this can happen? Hecks no. Has something similar to this happened on quite a few occasions? All I can say is "allegedly";) . PS I love this kind of stuff, as it makes it all more fun to watch and scandalous all at the same time.:D Enjoy!
SeaBunny Posted February 1, 2008 #881 Share Posted February 1, 2008 Same thing with Miss USA last year. Miss USA did win the dress designed for her in the Miss Universe pageant. I couldn't even see anything different from the original design as shown on project runway -- which really surprised me. She was either first or second runner-up in the end, BTW. Other slightly sneaky thing is...There is no rule or way to stop a guest judge from "scoring" their choice as 100% all across the board, and everything else Zeros. No matter what the other judges score, this will artifically "inflate" the guest judges choice to the top. Funny. I help with judging advertising award competitions and I always warn the judges if they vote that way ( 0 or 100 only), their votes will be thrown out. One year, when a judge persisted, we escorted him off the premises and onto his airplane.
whoop913 Posted February 7, 2008 #882 Share Posted February 7, 2008 Good episode last night - particularly the ending (as in, who got auf'd). Favorite line of the night: Christian on his wrestling stage nam and strength: “Furocia Coutura and her power is... she sprays girls in their eyes with hairspray!”
Rare cruisemom42 Posted February 7, 2008 #883 Share Posted February 7, 2008 I had a feeling Chris would do well this week...... Loved it. Well, as much as one can "love" a spandex leopard outfit designed for a female wrestler. :D Christian continues to grow on me, sort of like a very spoiled but endearing child. And he's definitely talented. Want to see him at Bryant Park. Rami: I like him, and I was worried this week. It's almost like the producers got together and decided to pick a challenge he'd have a hard time with, just to keep us guessing. It would be a real shame, IMHO, if he doesn't get to show at BP too. Sweet P was saved once again by her willingness to LISTEN to feedback and modify her design. Ricky (noticeably lacking these attributes) finally got auf'd, and it's about time. Looks like CJW was right: they gave him the win last week to prove he wasn't so bad, and took him out this week. Gillian's outfit was cute, but she needs to figure out a way to stop stressing so much and finishing at the last minute. I have always had a feeling that she has something better up her sleeve (so to speak!) so would also like to see her make it to the finals. RachieLnnn Posted February 7, 2008 #884 Share Posted February 7, 2008 Hi everyone, just found this thread and LOVE Project Runway! DH and I watch it every week. Something about the workroom atmosphere reminds us of college (we both went to architecture school, where we had to rush to finish our designs, think of "concepts," make models, drawings, etc. and then presented to professors ("judges" haha). :) Anyway, we were shocked that Sweet Pea stayed this week... we didn't think much of her design. However, we were not sad that Ricky left, and kind of felt it was time for him to go. And I do think Sweet Pea comes up with some great ideas at times, and appreciate that she listens to advice (loved her denim outfit!!!!).
Curt Jerome Wild Posted February 7, 2008 #885 Share Posted February 7, 2008 So, I'm working in Vegas this week, and as I settled into my hotel room at 10 PM to watch last night, they don't have Bravo on the TV! So, I'll just post the pictures without my comments until I get to see the episode over the weekend. That being said, it looks like a fun challenge, and it definitely looks like Chris, Christian, and Jillian are the only ones who "got" the idea of the challenge. They are all perfect for the context! And the point of challenges like this are exactly to push the designers (like Rami) out of their comfort zone; and hopefully prove that they can adapt their style or visions to different challenges. So far to me (except for the first weeks being in a rut) it really seems like Christian and Jillian have done this adaptation, but sticking with their design sensibilities the best. Can't wait to see this episode! (I lurv the Divas!) (And no I'm not talking about Christian and Chris!);)

Curt Jerome Wild Posted February 7, 2008 #891 Share Posted February 7, 2008 Ricky - is aufed! This looks like a cool bathing suit, but I can just see from the picture that it would never work for WWE wrestling! What say all of you? PS Finalists show at Fashion Week Friday, so I'll what I can dig up after!;)
SeaBunny Posted February 7, 2008 #892 Share Posted February 7, 2008 If I were a designer I would want the Divas for models! It was so much more fun watching them go down the runway. Thank goodness Ricky is finally gone. At least he didn't start bawling. Was there a Bond girl with almost that exact swimsuit? It looked really familiar. Chris' comment about winning the tackiest challenge was great. I'm getting the feeling he's in this to get away from costumes. Is it my imagination, or does it seem like Christian is always finished early? He must have great time management skills. I did like his outfit. Rami kept saying it wasn't his style, but it looked like his style to me. If I just saw the Divas and didn't know who did what, I would guess that was his. I really didn't like it. In fact, I haven't liked much of anything he's done except the candy outfit -- which was totally not his style. I'm hoping for Chris, Christian, and Gillian for the final three. If four -- add Rami. folashade Posted February 8, 2008 #893 Share Posted February 8, 2008 well it was about time for Ricky to go. He was so far off base plus that suit has been done a bunch of times before Christien is talented but so annoying he irks me every week he has this expectant smirk on his face "Yes declare me the winner!" and looks shocked, I keep waiting for him to jump up and down screaming that he is the winner. I do want to see him make it to the end Rami eh. I think he drapes very very well but I don't know if I want to see him in the finals. I just don't envision anything else coming from him but draped jersey or silk dresses in the entire show If it came to three I'd want Christen, Chris, Jillian (she annoys me too) since I think you would see the most interesting collections from them
Curt Jerome Wild Posted February 8, 2008 #894 Share Posted February 8, 2008 Okay! So some initial pics from the Show today! It won't really be any spoilers here (except some early pics), because I don't know who is considered "in the finals" and who are just showing their collections as "decoys", but either way they are all showing. Another thing, sneaky Project Runway, there are NO tags or anything to say whose collections is whose... But I think I figured it out. So, I'm guessing here, and some could be mixed up, but I think it's basically giving a good idea. It looks good to me!
