bingomamma19 Posted April 9, 2018 #1 Share Posted April 9, 2018 Ok, so booked this last year in January and finally its coming close!! I have only been on Caribbean cruises before, so will there be differences? I know it will be colder :), but will there be less entertainment? What about bands ...pools? Will the pools be usable? Will it be light out almost 24 hrs a day? I read the Legend is going into drydock next month, so hoping for great things there also!! Looking forward to your input.... blueshine Posted April 9, 2018 #2 Share Posted April 9, 2018 On our Alaska cruise on the Miracle, also a Spirit class ship, they had similar activities. The pool was enclosed during chilly or inclement weather. There were nature presentations regarding Alaska and the various wildlife. Things were definitely quieter in the evenings and it stayed light out much later. A bit more laid back. It was all about the scenery which was spectacular. Enjoy!! candctroll Posted April 9, 2018 #3 Share Posted April 9, 2018 We are going on the Legend in July. Like you, I've only done the Caribbean so looking forward to comparing the two.
ParrotRob Posted April 9, 2018 #4 Share Posted April 9, 2018 As for daylight, you will never have 24 hour daylight unless you are inside the Arctic Circle, which you won't be. In August, you'll have very short nights of 3-5 hours, depending on how late in August and how far north you are. Long days of 15-16 hours or so and the rest will be varying degrees of twilight. bingomamma19 Posted April 9, 2018 Author #5 Share Posted April 9, 2018 Does the Legend have the big screen on the Lido deck? If yes, does it show the dive in movies?
Missileer Posted April 9, 2018 #6 Share Posted April 9, 2018 Have done the Legend to Alaska several times. Nice ship but no big screen on Lido Deck. Recommend the train ride in Skagway and the Mt. Roberts Tram in Juneau. The day spent in the Fjord is magical. Steak House is killer and we like the Chop Stix Asian food on Lido Deck for lunch. Enjoy. Rare kctwinmommy Posted April 9, 2018 #7 Share Posted April 9, 2018 Does the Legend have the big screen on the Lido deck? If yes, does it show the dive in movies? They didn't have that when we went in 2016. It's quite different than Caribbean cruises for sure. Less people dress up for dinner, even on formal nights. I'm sure part of it has to do with packing so much for the cruise itself. Bring lots of layers! And warm gloves and good walking/hiking boots, waterproof for sure. You won't have 24 hour sun, but the sunsets are pretty late. This is what it looked like at 10 p.m. (only know the time because I titled it 10 p.m.! LOL!). 10:00 p.m. by Cindy, on Flickr Things are definitely more subdued on these cruises. We enjoyed the comedy club, some of the shows, the trivia, etc... And of course, the amazing scenery! We did a lot on our excursions!
CoW mAn Posted April 10, 2018 #8 Share Posted April 10, 2018 I know it will be colder :) Yea but it won't be cold all the time so I recommend a full zip fleece for switching back and forth when it gets warm
Number12 Posted April 10, 2018 #9 Share Posted April 10, 2018 I like to bring my rain pants that pull on over regular pants. They don't take up much room and really make a difference in comfort when it's rainy or even when the wind is blowing off the glaciers.

Frank12 Posted April 10, 2018 #11 Share Posted April 10, 2018 We are going on Legend in August also! Our last AK trip was on the Spirit in early June. We were really lucky then as we planned for lots of rain but it only rained one day. We had 82 degrees in Juneau. The ship shows, casino and pools will be open as on any other cruise. The atmosphere is more subdued (less party), but AK is all about the scenery. The weather is really unpredictable. It can be rainy and cold the whole time or sunny and beautiful. (Cross your fingers!) Bring clothes that you can layer and bring rain gear.

The drydock schedule I found doesn't list any pool upgrades.

No slides, as it's not really something that would be used a lot I would think. I don't know what the changes will be after the drydock though, I know there are other threads here about it. This was the one pool that was mostly used, and it wasn't used that much to be honest. We had somewhat cooler temps, but no rain, on our July cruise. Dreamer115 Posted April 10, 2018 #15 Share Posted April 10, 2018 Unless they've been removed I was just watching a youtube video about the Legend and there are 2 of them.

And there could have been! LOL! I truly don't remember. The only pool anyone used was the one I posted. We didn't have that much warm weather. But a quick Google search does show them. ;)
Rare kctwinmommy Posted April 10, 2018 #17 Share Posted April 10, 2018 OHH that looks beautiful...is there a lot of seating in that covered area? There's a decent amount, but since it's not used like a Caribbean it doesn't get that crowded. It is the only covered area though, if I remember correctly. grandmarnnurse Posted April 11, 2018 #18 Share Posted April 11, 2018 It will not have the “party by the pool” feel to it, and a much more sedate crowd. Not that that is bad, just different. The same thing happened when I took a cruise from NYC to Nova Scotia one year. Too cool for cocktails by the pool—-had a cappuccino instead! But very nice—just different. NWACruiser Posted April 17, 2018 #19 Share Posted April 17, 2018 Did the legend last July. It was a great trip. You will need some warm clothes during the trip through the fjord. Read my review (see my signature for it.) There is a lot of information there.
hott_michelle2001 Posted April 18, 2018 #20 Share Posted April 18, 2018 Cruising in Alaska is amazing! It is not as lively as a carribean cruise, its definetly a older crowd, but the scenry is beautiful and there will still be a lot of activities on board. candctroll Posted April 19, 2018 #23 Share Posted April 19, 2018 I wander how cold it's going to be on the lido at night cruising to Alaska. I know even going to the Caribbean it gets windy and chilly at times.
