Parking in NJ

Recommended Posts

Royal Caribbean said their official parking lot at the NJ port is $20 a day. Is there a cheaper place to park near the ship? Thanks!

Yes there is an off site parking lot in Bayonne about 2 miles from the ship. It does not get recommended due to their practices. They declared bankruptcy the past year or two and reopened under another name. I used this off site lot a few years back and would never recommend it. Lot had no painted lines, numerous potholes, they claim it is secured but in reality it is a section of a larger parking lot used by a business and the lot is accessible during the hours the business is open. Their shuttles have no NJ DOT numbers/markings. I believe they rent vehicles on a need basis. There is also questions as to their insurance liability. If saving $5-$8 per day is more important than their failings, I am sure you can find their name online. You might want to read what others have written about them on the east coast boards before leaving your vehicle in their care.

Depending on the length of your cruise, it may be more cost-effective to stay in a hotel the night before where they include parking in the charge. There are lots of those near Bayonne.

However, you must compute the R/T cab fare in the equation.

Bayonne is a highly urban area. $20/day is a reasonable amount to leave your car in a secured parking garage.

Don't know if the pricing is controlled by the city of Bayonne or the Port Authority of NY/NJ.

We took an 8 day cruise in March and we parked in the $20 per day lot. It was very convenient to drop our bags off and then park next to the ship. It was great when we got off and in our car within minutes of embarking. I recommend parking at the port. The price is $20 per day and no additional taxes or added fees. You may find a cheaper price but definitely not as convenient.

Parking at the Port is very easy.

You approach the port, drop your bags at the pier and the baggage handlers put them in the bins so they are delivered to the ship. You drive a little farther and enter the port garage. Take a ticket. Park your car. TAKE the ticket with you.

After the cruise, collect your baggage and clear immigration/customs. You can either take your luggage with you or have someone stay with the bags while you go to get the car. On the ground level of the garage, you insert the ticket you got when you parked the car. The fee is then computed and you can pay with CC or cash. Then go to the level of the car. If you have your luggage, load your car and head down the ramp. Insert the Paid ticket and the gate raises and off you go. If you have someone waiting with luggage, then you need to go back to the pier area and load you luggage.

Very easy!!! $20/day is not much for that area and you d not have to wait for a shuttle to take you to a hotel.
