247vacation Posted May 11, 2018 #1 Share Posted May 11, 2018 Hi, we are going on a couple of non-ship sponsored excursions. We have to pay cash when we arrive. Can I pay in $100 bills or are smaller bills preferred by the vendors in Mexico? Thanks!
Rare shof515 Posted May 11, 2018 #2 Share Posted May 11, 2018 it is best if you ask the vendor what they prefer. generally, smaller bills is always better
roger001 Posted May 11, 2018 #3 Share Posted May 11, 2018 Smaller bills. Cash as close to the purchase price as possible. And hundreds are frequently suspicious. Some vendors may also be giving you change back in their currency.
247vacation Posted May 11, 2018 Author #4 Share Posted May 11, 2018 Wow! That was quick! Thanks. I should have thought of this before I went to the bank. I will cash them in at the ship casino for smaller denominations.
Mom2B&Z Posted May 11, 2018 #5 Share Posted May 11, 2018 I only carry $100 bills when I’m trying to minimize the wad of cash I’m carrying ashore. We are a family of 4, so day-long excursions quickly add up in cost. Like others have suggested, make sure the vendor in question will accept this denomination of currency. In Bangkok they preferred large bills. Apparently the larger the bill the better the exchange rate. I am guessing that this is an exception, but you never know
247vacation Posted May 11, 2018 Author #7 Share Posted May 11, 2018 I emailed the vendors and am waiting to hear back. It's much easier to pay in $100's! :D:D

It's much easier to pay in $100's! :D:DSeveral non ncl excursion I went on specified exact cash on the page. Some might have change, but they might not. It often depended on if the excursion was to a resort type thing vs more active thing where the only people going are those on excursions (ie not a place anyone could just walk into). 247vacation Posted May 12, 2018 Author #9 Share Posted May 12, 2018 Both vendors are fine with $100 bills. Thanks for your help!

Can I pay in $100 bills or are smaller bills preferred by the vendors in Mexico? Thanks! This is a vendor-specific question. Many vendors and stores won't take large bills. And many vendors and stores won't give you change in US dollars, so unless you want a pocket full of pesos, break the bills.

It's much easier to pay in $100's! :D:D If it cost more than $100 then I don’t see the problem. But like you already said, you can always break the bills at the casino. The Other Tom Posted May 12, 2018 #14 Share Posted May 12, 2018 Depends on the cost of the tour. It it's a couple of hundred, or more, pay with 100's. The vendor will have to take the cash to the bank anyway to exchange to his local currency, and 100's are more accepted at banks world wide than smaller bills. Regardless of which bills you take, make sure you use crisp, new (or nearly new) bills.
