Unlikely we would be in CA before Jan 17th, as our Grandson's birthday is the 15th. Normally depart a day or 2 after that. In Indio, we stay at Indian Waters RV Park, but have also stayed in both W'Marks.

OK, a meet-up will happen sooner or later, we frequent too many of the same hang-outs.

This is enlightening to see these side-by-side 2020 Viking & Princess World Cruise comparisons. Since my wife & I have some different spending habits, and with the 2021 Princess World Cruise Early Booking Benefits being much better in 2021 than it is for 2020, the Viking cruise would still be nearly double the price for us. Thanks for sharing this info, it actually makes me feel better about my upcoming 2021 Princess WC now, but I will also be keeping a closer eye on price comparisons for future WCs. I see you also have an RV & timeshares, so perhaps we will see each other sometime in the future. We are enjoying your blog too. Keep enjoying life to the fullest, and Safe Travels!

We are looking at the 2022 Princess World Cruise and are hoping for similar Early Booking.  Plus, Hubby will get military credit.  Sgt, Major, can you advise what type of a room you book?  We've always done an inside room for financial reasons as well as the only thing we do in a room (well, almost 😉 ) is sleep and change.  But this will be a lot longer than our normal trip.  We travel light as we are used to traveling double on a motorcycle.  Thanks in advance.

I'm not the Sgt. Major, but I'll ring in.

She Who Must Be Obeyed and I have just under 50 cruises on several lines, including, Cunard, RCI, Celebrity, HAL, Princess, and Viking Ocean.  While her comfort requirements are a bit above mine, my travel benchmark is camping out on long Harley rides and eating military MREs warmed up on the bike's engine as I set up camp. Anything above that and I'm pretty much satisfied.

We cruise for the itinerary, but also try to avoid spring break and school holidays to reduce the number of feral children on the cruise.  We enjoy a wrap around promenade with deck chairs.  If I can scrape up a wee dram of a good, peaty Scotch before dinner, I'm good.  We always find something good to eat somewhere on the ship.

Conventional wisdom is never book a world cruise on a line on which you have not sailed before - BUT the price on P&O could not be beat by all of the lines that I researched.  And it's on the Aurora - adults only!  99 days, Southampton to Southampton.  January 3, 2022.

We booked a balcony for this one. It is our first world cruise, and with it being 4 months long, we wanted to make sure we wouldn't have any regrets. The price difference was fairly reasonable. Perhaps on a future world cruise, we might opt for an oceanview cabin to save a bit more, but then again, we might keep going for the balcony rooms; time will tell. The private balcony for morning coffee, an occasional meal, sun bathing (during certain times of the day), book reading, and/or a quick shot of fresh sea air sounds good for a long trip like this. I am sure we would be happy with just about any room that isn't located below a night club or the pool deck. We look forward to meeting the both of you!

Nice to hear from a fellow biker. Just got back from riding the Florida Keys and heading to the Canadian Rockies on the bike in July. I’ll check out P&O. Ride safe

Thanks all. We’ve always done an interior room.  Fresh air would entice though. Has anyone done a world cruise on an inside room and would you do it again?

I did an Around The Horn Cruise a few years ago on my own.  It was a bucket list item for me.  Fort Lauderdale to San Francisco.  49 nights in an inside cabin.  The cabin was a place to shower, shave, and sleep.  I don't mind an inside when it's just me, but She Who Must be Obeyed insists on a balcony since she uses it as her own private sanctuary and I serve as her personal cabin boy for snacks and coffee.  In that event, I try to book a balcony on what will be the sunny side of the ship for the majority of the cruise - for example eastbound transatlantic it's the starboard side.

Since I had no problem with 49 nights, I think I'll be OK for 99.  But, to each his own.

Oh, and the world cruise is also on my bucket list, not hers, so She Who Must Be Obeyed will sit that one out also.  She likes cruising, just not as much as me.  I'm the son of a son of a sailor.

Best of luck on your world cruise.  It will be another adventure not soon forgotten.

I think we can handle the inside room, but if ever we plan to splurge, it would be on a WC.  It's just so hard to spend an additional $12,000-$15,000 for cheapo me.

Think of how many other cruises you can do for that $12-15,000.  It's not being a cheapo, but travel smart.  In our case, our car and truck are both 15 years old and in beautiful condition.  My Harley is 13 years old and also looks brand new, but I've ridden it all over the US.  My point?  Think of all the money we've saved in the past decade and a half by not feeling the need to get a new car or bike every three years.  We would rather cruise.

And besides, you never see a U Haul truck following a hearse.  May as well spend it on something we enjoy.

Agree. We aren’t rich and really worked & saved and have always lived on 1/2 our income so we were debt free by 45 and were able to retire at 57. That included driving vehicles for at least 10 years. Now the plan is to travel by ship, motorcycle or car for the next 10 years or so while we physically can.  By the time the nursing home takes our savings, I don’t plan to give them much.

Would someone explain why  people prefer a westerly direction?

Go-Bucks-What were some of the ports on the 2019 cruise that weren't on the 2020?

Go Bucks and Heidi13-Did you consider Regent?

World Cruises have significantly greater experience with Clox. Heading in a Westerly direction the Clox generally go back an hour, so you gain an extra hour. Crossing the IDL you lose all this extra time by losing an entire day.

Eastbound cruises - the Clox are put forward, so if at the normal time of 02:00, you lose an hour sleep. Note - on E'bd sailings some Masters will change the Clox at Noon, so you don't lose sleep.

Some nights are a 1/2 hr change rather than the full hour.

We reviewed all Premium/Luxury Lines, so yes we considered Regent. They weren't in the first group eliminated, as the size of ship is about our minimum preference. However, they were eventually eliminated due to:

  • Dress code - formal nights are optional. Having worked in the days when every night was formal and everyone dressed up, we are tired of the sham that formal nights have become.
  • Casino - casino is installed, which for us is a waste of space
  • Kids - while you may not experience kids on a WC, Regent does accept them.
  • Ownership - owned by mass market NCL. I have seen what Carnival did to P&O/Princess, so have no desire to support any of the 3 big mass market companies.

Did you also consider Cunard?

Negative, we will never sail again on any Carnival brand and unfortunately Cunard were purchased by them even before P&O. They also tend to depart Southampton in early January, which can be a really unpleasant first few days of the cruise. Completed way too many of those departures.

My sister was a travel agent and her impression of Viking was that they were the Carnival  of river cruise lines.  I need to ask her what she meant by that . Obviously I don’t think you’d agree with that!

Oh my goodness, no!  No no no no no!  If anything, they would be the polar opposite of Carnival.

We haven't completed a VR yet, so no first hand knowledge.

However, having experienced VO, I would consider this highly unlikely, especially when you consider the Chairman's track record. He has extensive experience with quality, being the CEO of Royal Viking Line in the '80's.

I suggest the only comparison to Carnival, is they are the biggest river cruise line.

I am also booking inside. One reason is that traveling solo my cruise is already costing me 75 % of what the cruise is costing for 2 persons. I have been in an ocean-view cabin, but when are you actually going to look out, only when you get into any port or leaving a port and for that I can go on deck. I have done 31 days around South America and had no problem being in an inside cabin. I rather spend that money on excursions to really see the world. I do live right on the ocean with a beautiful view of surrounding islands, so am used to a good view and can manage without it even for 4 month. I do travel a lot with my Adult-Children and we prefer to each have an inside cabin, then sharing (my daughter and me have to much clothes anyhow). When it comes to flights included it all depends again how far you are flying. I do have quite a distance from the Virgin Islands to Venice but do that on airline-points, there business and as it looks now return premium economy since I will need more points for additional cruises in summer 2022 for my daughter and me. Thankfully my son buys his own air. And then I need to safe up points for air for my 2023 cruise. I don't drink much so the wine with lunch and dinner Costa includes is all I would do anyhow. On other cruises I would just buy a bottle and that would last me 2 dinners. Excursions is one thing I will not be cheap on. I do watch cruise passengers here just getting off the ship and walking around Road Town, believe me there is nothing to see in Road Town, but there are so many beautiful places to visit on excursions in the BVI.   I have been on Costa on a Baltic cruise and in Russia the 2 days were 1 day St. Petersburg and 1 day Moscow at $ 500 per person which for what was offered seemed very reasonable to me. Alone watching the long lines to get into the Hermitage and we walked almost straight in. Concerning luggage forwarding, I have priced it already and one suitcase from Venice to the BVI will be about $ 300,00 so doable. So it really depends on what your preferences are. Enjoy your cruise, I am sure you will have a great time.

Working with above spread sheet. I am bored and disappointed not to be on my WC 2022 but will be 2023 and 2024. I am now even happier then before that I chose Costa Deliziosa for my trip, as mentioned before for single it is just a great deal. The quotes for Viking and Royal Caribbean single were around 100.000/ $ 112.000 - not something I am willing to spend. So I did a little snooping on the included excursions on some lines and to my disappointment most of them to me are just basic and excursions I would not even pick and the one's I would pick you still need to pay for. I had booked some excursions for the 2022 Costa WC already before it was cancelled and the included excursions were great, like for example full day Petra, so no complaints about the 15 excursions included in Costa's fare and I sure will get my money's worth. I am traveling to see the places we visit, not just to be on a ship. Air I will do on points and luggage forward even the BVI to Venice is only $ 300 per suitcase. I had planned to do a lot of laundry myself in the cabin, but Costa is offering a laundry package - 25 pieces for Euro 19.99 - so booked that for every 10 days I should be more then set just doing some small things myself. As mentioned before I don't drink much, so the wine and beer included in my package will be sufficient and I will have no problem paying for any extra drinks - and my cappuccino's 😊. Concerning meals, I have always loved Costa's food. So for me, traveling solo and considering my needs Costa is the perfect choice. So for others who are not frugal like me their choice will be perfect for them. You all enjoy your World Cruise - so much to see so little time in our life 😀

Curious

What is the price of this cruise for you?

How many days is the cruise?

We are looking at a 52 day cruise on Celebrity Edge Fall 2023. Not a true world cruise but a good chunk.

$20000/2 interior (200 sq. ft) includes drinks, tips & wifi.

Yes, we will need to pay about $1500 tips plus excursions (we usually book most of those with private vendors anyway).

KKB what I am paying will not be what it is now, since I will get 2024 at the price of 2022 since it had been cancelled and I had booked 2023 as soon as it became available to book, so right now my interior price for 2023 is 24838.38 including the Government fees. I think now the price is maybe $ 2000 more. that is single-occupancey, Premium.

Cruise is 128 days includes a drink-package (beer or wine with dinner and lunch), 15 excursions included, insurance will be $ 2,999.00, Service Charge Euro 11,00 per day. Fuel Surcharge $ 9,00 per day (fixed rate, only due because fuel-prices have increased since I booked). Concerning the included excursion I had booked some for the 2022 cruise already and they were not just tender to the port for you to explore on your own but for example all day Petra, when in Jordan:

                                                             ===========

"COMFORT PETRA: THE PINK CITY, AMIDST MAGIC AND FLAVOURS (Excursion included in the World Cruise fare)

Day 112: Aqaba

Difficulty level: Moderate

Type:

IN A NUTSHELL

An excursion to discover the city carved out of pink rock, with a journey into the depths of a narrow canyon almost 100 metres high. The excursion takes us from the magic of the dazzling "Treasury" to the typical flavours of the area.

MAIN STOPS:

    The Siq

    The Treasury of Petra

    Roman temples and tombs

    Roman amphitheatre

THE PROGRAMME:

We depart from Aqaba and head towards Petra, the "rose-red city half as old as time". Petra remained unknown for centuries, hidden between the mountains of southern Jordan. Founded by the Nabataeans, a Bedouin Arab tribe, which arrived from Arabia 2,000 years ago, the fortress-city of Petra became an important stronghold, protecting the many passing caravans.

The city only became famous in 1812, when it was discovered by a young Swiss explorer and revealed to the world. Subsequently it became a film set for the film, "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" by Steven Spielberg.

After leaving the coach, we walk towards the entrance to the "Siq", the bed of a narrow serpentine river which winds through the gorge for approximately two and a half kilometres.

Imposing rock faces soar up to a hundred metres on both sides. Out of the darkness emerges the sparkle of the The Treasury hewn into the rock, forty metres high and thirty metres wide.

In addition to the Treasury, we visit the magnificent temples, royal tombs, the amphitheatre and the burial chambers built by the Romans who took control of the city in 106 AD, and which represent an addition to the already existing Nabataean tombs and monuments, creating a city sculpted from rock.

At the end of the visit, we take the same route back to the tourist centre and the car park where the coaches are waiting for us and where we also find the restaurant in which we will have lunch and sample some local specialities.

Before heading back, we have some free time to buy souvenirs near to the site.

GOOD TO KNOW:

The coach transfer from Aqaba to Petra takes approximately 2 hours.

The excursion includes a walk which takes approximately 45 minutes from the coach park to the site. We return on foot to the car park, taking the same route.

The site visit includes a walking tour which lasts approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Comfortable shoes and sportswear are recommended.

This excursion is not recommended for guests with mobility problems.

Places on this excursion are limited. We recommend booking early.

No food or drinks are allowed on the site."

                                                            =========

At the moment only ship-excursions are permitted due to Covid. But excursions were reasonable priced last I saw.

They do have a laundry-package E 19.99 for 25 items (washed, dried folded or hang), so booked that for every 10 days to take care of most of my laundry-needs.

I do calculate to end up with probably $ 40,000 total, no sweat if it is a little more - some ships basic rate without anything starts with 38,000 and most are more then double that amount. Happy camper here.

And maybe Costa is not every bodies choice but I do love their food and the international atmosphere. I am from Germany and do spend a lot of vacation time in Europe.

I just want to say thanks for all the information you have provided regarding your Costa WC (especially as a solo traveler).  It is making my reconsider my thoughts on a WC.  I envision it on a small ship (700 passengers or less) and have mostly been looking at all-inclusive lines; of course, this means I see the WC as something I might be able to do a decade from now.  Reading your posts makes me think maybe I should re-think my priorities to make the WC happen sooner.  I have a 7-week trip on Silversea that will cost me almost as much as your WC; I need to decide if it makes sense to keep moving towards extended voyages, or perhaps, start with a WC and then return to those long trips.  You've given me a new perspective.  Thank you.

And maybe Costa is not every bodies choice but I do love their food and the international atmosphere. I am from Germany and do spend a lot of vacation time in Europe.

Thank you for sharing this.

This may be the way we go--I love the itinerary & the price is RIGHT.
