Genoa question

Does one need a shore excursion when arriving in Genoa or can we get into the city without one? My husband uses a cane so if it was more than a 15 minute walk, would there be taxis available at the dock? We just like being able to leisurely walk around, shop, and sample food.

Thank you!

Diane

It is a short walk to the main plaza near the water, maybe around 10 minutes? Once there, you can enter the old town right behind the plaza.

Turn right when you leave the port building and follow the road along the water. There is also a bus that covers that stops at the port and the plaza, but I don't know the number. Maybe someone else does. We had a guide, who put my parents on the bus at the end of our walking tour, while I stayed with the kids for gelato on the plaza.

hey stardust

you can look at tree cycle genoa. when coming thru cruise terminal they should be there offering pedicab tours with driver/guide around town. down small alleys, stop for photo ops, window shopping, learning history about christopher columbus' home. stop for lunch, have a glass of wine and people watch. will save you "paws" from so much walking. i have a knee issue (torn meniscus-ouch) and we did pedicab in florence and amsterdam, cost was like 20 to 30 euros, worth every euro. ask how long tour and what you get (2, 3, 4 hours). have a fun day and cruise

Thank you. That sounds very nice. My husband has bad knees would like to do as little walking as possible. We've been waiting to go to Europe for this reason. He is unable to have surgery any time soon, so we decided to go for it now. Being on a cruise helps tremendously. Hopefully the plane ride won't do him in.
