Daveywavey70 Posted July 18, 2023 #17831 Share Posted July 18, 2023 Does anybody know if a Cravate is a suitable substitute for a neck tie on formal nights? Apologies to any coolers not in the know.

And to be even more annoying, in the US it is spelled cravat. Spelt is a type of wheat: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spelt 😉
lincslady Posted July 18, 2023 #17834 Share Posted July 18, 2023 Jazzbeau - I just looked it up, as I felt a fool, but either is correct, my version more used in the UK than the USA.. I admit when I reread it I doubted myself, it does look odd. And the only prize I got at school was for spelling! Agreed that spelt is also a type of wheat. Rare Host Jazzbeau Posted July 18, 2023 #17835 Share Posted July 18, 2023 Lola I didn't mean to imply that you were wrong – I assumed it was another of our 'shared language' differences!

lincslady Posted July 18, 2023 #17837 Share Posted July 18, 2023 Jazzbeau I suppose I am a bit touchy as spelling is the only thing apart from speaking reasonable French that I am good at. Neither all that useful in the real world. Lola

lincslady Posted July 18, 2023 #17842 Share Posted July 18, 2023 My education is improving all the time on here - I thought foulard was just a silky fabric; now I know it can mean the scarf or tie made from the fabric. I will be ready for my final exams soon. 4
