Football on board

As you can see from my screen name, I am a huge NY Giants football fan. We are boarding the Pride on Sunday, Oct 28, where the Giants are playing the Redskins at 1:00. The ship doesn't depart until 4, so will they have any games on the TV's before we leave? like, even in the sports bar? I have been told yes and no, so does anyone have an idea?

Cheers

Len

I don't think anyone really knows right now since they got rid of the network channels. We'll probably have a better idea after the season starts. If you're going to be in port and you really wanted to watch the Giants you could if you got something like sunday ticket to go. I'm only booking the last week of August and after the season now because I'm not missing a Saints game.

I think ships with a skybox sports bar would definitely show them but can't say that for a fact. They had tons of live games on the vista.

Last year on Triumph they were unable to pickup the Thursday night NFL game in the sports bar. The year before they got it.

With so many NFL teams playing that as well as other pro sports and crap like soccer, golf and tennis there is only a chance that you'll specifically see the Giants play.

I have little doubt they’d show all football on Sunday that time of year if they could. The question is if they get any games since they cut out the network tv.

It has been a while since we sailed Carnival. I didn't know that they cut out network TV. How do they get their games (sports) now, Satellite?

That change came around this time last year. The sports bars, casino bar, and red frog pub seem to have cable sports channels such as ESPN, FS1, and SEC Network. So you would be able to get a good bit of college football and Monday night football...but they got rid of the networks stations so I don't know how they would be able to get the Sunday NFL games unless they have some international channel that shows it.

People have the DISH and subscribe to the NFL package, so they get all games (I believe). If Carnival had some sort of connection or satellite they should be able to get anything game they wanted, or, so I'm told.

As was said, we really won't know until the season starts.

And, just to ask again, IF they are able to show NFL games, would they be on BEFORE the ship sails? Like are the bars et al open and showing sports or whatever, BEFORE we embark?

Sunday ticket is exclusive to directv as far as satellite goes. They pay 1.5 billion dollars/year for it...And it’s very very expensive if you are a business that intends to show it to 4,000 people.

All I can add in regards to Football is that I was on the Pride for Super Bowl in February and the ONLY place you could watch the game was on the big screen TV on Lido. That was it!

No network channels at all..:(

On all the ships where there are sports bars, we have noticed the TV's were on when they were not open! The casino bar also carries NFL games, and even on the outdoor screens on big games! If you're departing NY, or Balt., gotta think your game will be on, otherwise you can ask the bar tenders to put it on one of the TV's!:D

The last time we were on (after network tv loss) the Skybox sports bar did not open till 1:00, so there was a bunch of people waiting and 1 nervous bar tender. He had a list of what games he could get, which was basically Sunday ticket minus any network games. If the game you want is on local TV you are out of luck. Sunday night game they could not get, but Monday night they could. It was a strange mix. Hopefully they have a better plan now.

Sunday night football is on a network station (NBC). Monday night football is not (ESPN). So that part would make sense.

This is a good question.. Maybe if you reach out to John Heald on his blog he might have some insight. I have to think they will be doing something to get at least some of the Football Games but I don't know that for sure.

I boarded the Pride Oct 1, 2017. At that time, they had CBS and Fox in the cabins so I was able to watch NE vs Carolina and Pit vs Balt in my cabin. For the late games, they had NYG vs Tampa Bay, Philly vs LA Chargers and Denver vs Oak in the sports bar. That Saturday, there were plenty of college games on.

From what I'm reading, all that is in the past. I'm hoping they at least get the proper channels for the sports bar.

Wow. I've never seen SEC network on a Carnival Corp branded ship, before or after they stopped offering network TV channels. And I've been on a lot of Carnival Corp branded ships.

Since Carnival Corp (notice I said Corp and not just the Carnival brand) dropped carrying local networks on their ships last year, availability of college and NFL football games is very, very limited. They might show a select game on a small screen in a bar at certain select times of their choosing, but otherwise college and NFL games are not available on Carnival Corp ships. After Carnival ships stopped carrying local networks last year, I sailed on a couple Carnival ships and nationally televised NFL games were only available in one bar on small screens and it was so packed, you couldn't even get close enough to the screen to see the game, much less find an available chair to sit down and enjoy the game. If you're a serious fan, stay home and enjoy your college or NFL game. You'll likely otherwise be disappointed once onboard a Carnival Corp ship during American football season.

Thanks for all the replies--some hopefully, others not so.

I am a serious fan, but if my DW wants to cruise, you all can guess what will take precedence.

This is a 1PM game so it is not a national game, but it being the Washington Redskins playing, maybe there is some hope it may be on somewhere. As long as there is a chance of it being on some where before the ship leaves, gives me a glimmer of hope.

Cheers

Well they have it in the red frog pub on the breeze.
