Rolex on Breakaway

Has anyone purchased the second hand Rolex watches available on the Breakaway.

I have NOT but thought seriously about doing so! I saw one that I LOVED....e mailed my son in law for comps.....and apparently the price was not that bad....BUT when I took my husband to see it and to offer similar price to the amount that my son in law had come up with.....I was by the sales person that they would have to go and ask their manager, I threatened to leave.....she suddeenly remembered a "special" they had going on.....so although I truly wanted the watch - I told her that I was not happy buying a Rolex priced in the mid 6 digits by "bargaining" as though I was on the coast in Mexico.

She practically tracked us down as we politely left the store.....and she kept assuring me that she could definitely match the price that I had offered.....but I declined.

Would I do it? YES! As sometimes we only get the chance to do things outside of our normal routines while on vacation. And as I have considered this purchase twice over the past three years, I have yet to go through with it. It was probably my fault that I did not "pull the trigger" the last time....but I HATE for someone to think that I am stupid....i.e. suddenly remembering an unpublished "special"....but also understand that they are trying to get top dollar for all of their merchandise. Sailing once again on the Getaway.....who knows? They might have my favorite Rolex and I might come home with it!

Sad to say but my least favorite crew members are those that work the jewelry shop.....as they do not even make eye contact before sizing up the size of the diamond on your hand....as well as the rest of your jewelry. Mine is "up there" in terms of karat size, etc...so I tend to get a lot of "help" in the jewelry store. Thing that bugs me is that they treat you as though you are stupid and do not have access to the internet!

My advice is to check the internet for the item that you are considering, or have someone do it from home (less of your minutes used up!) and then make a decision. And sometimes my decision also rides on how well I am doing in the casino! But I have considered and WOULD to it! Just hope the next sales person doesn't p___ss me off! As that is the only reason that I walked away last time....

I love people why try to judge what I can afford.

They’re idiots, know some very wealth people who spend much of their free time in their “yard clothes”.

Funny that, I came down from the Haven in a worn linen shirt, a bit creased, with my old comfy shorts on, the sales guy completely ignored me, whilst talking to some women who had her nose in the air, until I picked up a couple of bottles of Gin, and got my Haven card to pay, then enquired about the Rolex sale later, good God the covers came of the watches, although it was exclusive in a couple of hours time.

Unfortunately knowing the Rolex brand very well, the watches were very average, not Daytona or submariners, the assistant babbled on about the condition and guarantee, I suspect the watches come from a source in the jewellery quarter in Birmingham UK, where a monthly auction takes place.

We enjoy watches and jewelry in our family. We find the best source for second hand timepieces is Gray & Sons, who has a physical store in Miami, as well as a large online presence. I would not be comfortable with this type of purchase from a cruise ship, personally, but you gotta do you.

While not a Rolex a while back I saw this Citizen eco drive chronograph watch.

Real nice fancy rotating dial multiple time zones stop watch etc.

It was only $450 on the ship was impressed but resisted temptation to buy.

Later on Ebay bought the watch for $165.

Wait be patient your watch will come in at a price you can afford.

On another note why do I need a watch now - I have a cell phone that

Smartly tells me the time and apts for counting up or down timing and

telling time zones and does math calculations !

Sorry Mickey there no more need for you to tell me the time.

Although I wouldn't buy a Rolex (the time is the time, no matter what brand you have) we do buy watches and jewelry because they are our "memories". And yes, I know I can get them for less (I live in NYC....15 minutes away to the diamond district and I'm well educated in gems) but it's part of our "cruising experience".

I've yet to see a price on a ship I couldn't beat by miles on land. I'm a bit of a watch geek with over 20 in the current collection so I like to look at them but I would probably never buy one on the ship. I don't usually buy the high end stuff like Rollies which are much harder to find a deal on at a legit dealer. But if you have a decent relationship with a shop you may get a better deal. I love my LV submariner though;).

This is the reason to buy any jewelry on the ship.

I’m something of a watch junkie and know a bit about brands and pricing. While not the best prices, ship prices aren’t bad. Not paying taxes on the purchase is a nice bonus, too.

Frankly, I know more than the sales people do regarding their brands and models.

Buy something that strikes your eye and that will act as a reminder of your cruise. What they carry is authentic and pricing is decent.

Looking at the watches available, no boxes, no paper work, I suggest they come from Fellows in the jewellery quarter Birmingham UK. Look at sale back catalogue

You're missing our point. The sentimental value of something is priceless. A catalogue, a website.....no memories associated with it.

DH bought me a diamond/sapphire dolphin pendant last time the ship docked in San Juan. I absolutely didn't need it....actually didn't even want it (how many dolphin pendants do I need?) but DH wanted me to remember that trip.

My first cruise ever, on the Norwegian Dream, out of New Orleans, a couple of months before the floods, I purchased an Omega Seamaster for $1600 now the conversion to the £ in those days was great, I’m wearing that watch now typing this, not bad 12 years ago for £824 all in, in auction now with the wave face who knows?

I have learned never to buy second hand anything, whether is Jewelry or cars, at the end they provide more headaches than blessings, IMHO. That said, I was on the Epic and saw the Rolex watches and i thought they were too expensive for a second hand watch. When i came back home a new one of a design sold on board was about $500 dollars more expensive.

I am a expert in Rolex history and manufacturing, you can pick up this special tool to remove the back of any Rolex and see the movement, you cannot fake the movement due to 21 jewels and craftsmanship. Before I purchase any watch I check the movement, if the seller will not allow you to open then walk away. This is the easiest way to tell a real from a copy. I have seen some amazing reverse engineered watches but they never incorporate the jewels because then they could not sell it for 2000.

There are many other signs but you have to know your watches both the year and the model. Buyer beware

PS I have had that submariner for 25 years and will bequeath it in my will, it has dived to 110 feet and been through Afghanistan and Iraq, is it worth the money you have to decide

This is a very lucrative hobby both collecting and appraising , having said this I am only trying to help out fellow cruisers and will not promote my business by answering any questions on Rolex specifically

Tom

I tried to load pics but site says file is to large, this tool on eBay is 40.00 and well worth the money

All the ones I’ve looked at come with their respective boxes, manuals and international warranty certificates.
