Viking Homeland ext. Choice: 2 nights in Oslo OR 1night in Bergen & 1 night in Oslo

Recommended Posts

We are considering the Viking Homelands cruise with a post extension. Viking offers two choices: 2 nights in Oslo OR 1 night in Bergen & 1 night in Oslo. Which would be recommended? The last port of call is Bergen, so you would already have had 1 day in Bergen. There are no tours included with the 2 nights in Oslo extension. There is a tour in Bergen and a tour in Oslo included in the 1 night I Bergen & 1 night in Oslo extension. We don't know which to choose. How much time do you need to see each city? Are they walkable cities; since there are no tours offered in one of the extensions.

Both cities have walkable areas as well as more remote sights that require public transit. Since you have at least one day in Bergen either way, the choice is more a matter of preference. Oslo is a much bigger city, which means there’s more there, but it also means that it has a bit less character. Whereas Bergen is a small historic Hanseatic port, Oslo is more like the other Scandinavian capitals.

If you like museums or art, I would do the 2 days in Oslo, so you can see more there. You can see a lot of Bergen in one day, so you wouldn’t be missing out on too much.

Do you take the train from Bergen to Oslo?

It’s a great train trip.

I loved all of the museums on the Bygdøy Peninsula in Oslo... but the museums were our priority in Oslo. We did not do any other sightseeing there except the museums.

Thank you for the information. We're not familiar with Scandinavian capitals (this is our first time to Scandinavia). However, we have been to Bruges and we enjoyed everything about the history and charm there. We like to visit historic buildings, walk the city to really get the "feel" of the place, and also like to be able to see some of the countryside, if possible. We're not really interested in museums, as such. We're getting the feeling that Oslo is more museums, art, and cosmopolitan; whereas Bergen may be more walkable and scenic. Is this correct?
