Sydney Opera House: CNN Profile, Pix's, etc.

From the CNN, the cable news network three days ago, they had this headline: “What to do at the Sydney Opera House”  with these highlights: “Since its inauguration on October 20, 1973, the iconic Sydney Opera House has been the centerpiece of the Sydney Harbour, drawing some 8.2 million visitors every year.  But there's much more to Australia's top tourist attraction than just a show-stopping facade.  From its complicated construction to popular bars and restaurants, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is full of surprises.”

Reading this profile offers many details about the design and construction of this "star" of Sydney.  This includes: "Rather than the boxy buildings that were common at the time, (architect) Utzon's winning concept featured sinuous curves and a unique silhouette -- a series of vaulted structures that resemble billowing white sails or stacked shells.  Beautiful as it was, the design proved to be extremely difficult to execute -- nothing like this had ever been done before.  Instead of the estimated four-year timeline and A$7 million (US$5 million) price tag, the project took 14 years and a whopping A$102 million to complete."

Fun story and interesting background that brings many wonderful memories from touring Sydney's Opera House, seeing an opera/music program there, exploring its exterior areas, etc.  If visiting Sydney and interested in their Opera House, this article offers great insights and options, including for food, sunset views, etc.

Here are a few more interesting items included in this story: "Despite its name, the building hosts more than 2,000 shows a year and only about 15% of them are opera.  There are six indoor performance venues (plus one more outdoors), more than 1,000 rooms and six restaurants.  There are more than 1 million Swedish roof tiles covering the structure -- and they actually change color as the day goes on, mirroring the sky."

What have been your experiences, tips, secrets, etc., to share regarding the Sydney Opera House?

Below are a few of my visuals from when we visited the Opera House in early 2014.  It was wonderful to do the tour here, take in a musical/opera program, explore and learn much on the challenges in constructing this world-famous structure.  More of my visuals to come.  Share your favorite pictures, details, etc., about the Sydney Opera House.

THANKS!  Enjoy!  Terry in Ohio

Here are two Sidney Opera House visuals from doing our harbor boat tour.  Yes, its roof tiles sparkle with the bright sun shining on its surface.  Lots of boat traffic in this amazing harbor.  Third is night shot of the Opera House from our window of the Four Seasons Hotel on the 7th floor. Cool!!::

Here we were in the Joan Sutherland Theatre intermission lobby with its unique glass structuring that overlooking the harbor. Second is another angle from this area to show its unusual construction design/style.:

Outside of the building, we were able to see and feel these tiles that were especially made in Sweden.  About a million of them were used! These roof tiles are actually made of two different tone on outside of Opera House roof. If these tiles were pure white, it would be too bright and glaring.:

Here is our Opera House guide giving us added background in main entrance lobby of the Joan Sutherland Theatre. Lots of wood on many of the inside surfaces of this structure. High, soaring ceilings here.:

There are many unique photo angles from Opera House including this one with our Solstice cruise ship showing through this gap.:

Here are few more visuals from our enjoying the performance of The Magic Flute in the Joan Sutherland Theatre of the Sydney Opera House complex. Sorry, they do not allow pictures during this opera performance. Wish I could have taken pictures as the cast, costumes, staging and sets were beyond great. Really first-rate, innovative and so very professional!! Plus, done in English, too!! That helps. The second view is of the theater interior during the intermission. The second and third shots show the reception area for refreshments during the opera intermission. Notice the nice red carpet, plus the views out to the harbor and seeing the famed bridge. Also, it is good to appreciate the details for how all of this steel and glass were put together in this part of this structure. Not your normal, bland, boring building design.:
