NCL Getaway Oct 14-21 Review

First I'd like to say that this is my 8th? cruise but my first review so please bear with me. I took notes throughout the cruise on things that were important to us. Everyone is different though so what we deemed noteworthy might not be that big of a deal to you. The other caveat I'd like to make is this review will likely come off as negative and while mostly that is what I will talk about, a vacation to a tropical location on a cruise boat is always good! So we enjoyed ourselves tremendously despite my gripes 🙂

We left Boise, ID Saturday early morning and our flights were UA through Houston. This was a new itinerary for us and we were pleasantly surprised at how easy and quick it was. Also, Houston has a great airport! Traveling to the east coast from Idaho is always a pain it seems but not this time! Sadly we were on United and we had 3 bags and no allowable carry-on. So we paid the fees and went about our way. I will say traveling without a carry-on or two was quite freeing. It's always a hassle to bring bags into a restaurant or store.

We arrived around 330, got our bags, ordered a Lyft and by 430 we were at our hotel. We chose the YVE downtown. It was one of the least expensive options and turned out to be fine. Not my favorite choice but for a couple of hours and a view of the port it worked really well. We walked to Bayside and strolled around before settling on a Cuban restaurant for dinner. Food was ok. Nothing to brag about, not the greatest mojito I've ever had (a theme throughout the week actually). This was our first time in Bayside too. It was a decent way to kill some time but I could live without going again.

Sunday morning came around  and we strained to find out ship in port. It was way in back so hard to see. We did a quick workout in the gym's fitness room, my husband jogged over to Illy's the Marriott (our fave coffee place in  Miami) and then headed to lobby for the shuttle to the port. We were the only ones in the shuttle and the driver had her boss's brand new Suburban which was very nice.

Embarkation was fine. No better or worse than any other experience we've had. We fretted and hemmed and hawed about should we or shouldn't we attempt to get Vibe passes. We decided we'd make the attempt but if we didn't get them it wouldn't ruin the week. We got to port around 10am and were on the ship by 1145.

Ok from here on out I will just list likes and dislikes we experienced. I'll try to add some pics too. As a reminder this is my first review so if I don't do this right please forgive me!mississippi.thumb.JPG.d1cf03c633898f715f781f66754568bc.JPGA picture from the plane of the Mississippi dumping into the Gulf. Ok so now to get into the details of the cruise and what we liked and didn't like. This was our second NCL cruise, our first with the kids was a Western Caribbean on the Pearl. Our preference is Celebrity but I believe we got a good deal on this one? Can't really even remember why we booked it.

Cabin: we booked an angled balcony and tried to upgrade to a Haven but got rejected. Probably a good thing in the end. The cabin we had was perfectly wonderful. The balcony was a little larger due to the angle, we were on deck 14 which was very convenient. Having a coffee maker in the room was awesome and unexpected! Our routine in the morning consists of waking up before almost everyone else (usually no later than 5), gulping down some coffee, and hitting the gym. Not having to go to the garden cafe or coffee place made it so much easier. On my husband. He's the coffee fetcher 🙂 The rooms are a little lacking in storage but we made it work ok. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was great although we had a small toilet issue. So small I wasn't even aware of it. Supposedly it didn't flush all the time. Never happened to me though. Our cabin steward was very accommodating and pleasant. The tv channel options were very limited but since we don't go on a cruise to sit in the room and watch tv it's not that big of a deal. Why is it that every single cruise we've been on the remote desperately needs batteries?

Vibe: as you saw in the picture above we snagged the last 2 spots in Vibe. Never having been on a boat with Vibe we weren't sure what we had gotten into and at first I was thinking we had wasted our money. More on that later.

Well, now i see why so many do a review one day at a time on the boat but we don't ever get the wifi so that wasn't an option for us. I'll be all over the place on this one trying to remember things.

Things we liked about the Getaway and NCL:

Coffee maker in the cabin

Boardwalk

Beds

Vibe (nice quality loungers with padding and towels provided which was nice since they terrified me with the charging if you lost your towel thing. Attentive staff. Peaceful and quiet for the most part, adults only)

Spice H20 (nice alternative to the pool for adults)

Gorgeous chandelier that changed colors

General decor of ship

You'll notice the "liked" list is somewhat short. Next post I will focus on the "disliked" list.

Now onto the dislikes.

Things we disliked about the Getaway and NCL:

Music in the restaurants was almost always inappropriate. the Italian restaurant didn't play Italian music (even Olive Garden can do that!), rock or pop type music in the main dining rooms clashed with the sedateness of the meals etc.

NEVER have I been on a boat that had so much smoking and smoke! I am not a smoker and don't like to be assaulted by it everywhere I go. I don't know if it was not enforcing rules or what. Walking through the casino didn't help at all. The boardwalk often was unusable because of it. The Sunset bar had the cigar room open right into so every time someone came in or out you got the stench of that.

Photographers were laughable. So funny we made a nightly game of watching them. The poses they put people in were ridiculous! We called one Smash your wife's face into a wall. Horribly uncomfortable and awkward looking.

Food was blah throughout the cruise. Very few highlights. This helped with maintaining our weight though so I could go either way on this. Breakfast in the main dining room was best. The Italian restaurant we thought was blah at best. The bread tasted biscuity. I just wanted some basic spaghetti and couldn't get that. Teppenyaki was good but all depends on the table and crowd you get put with. Cagneys was ok but if we didn't have the package we could have been just as happy with a steak in the main dining rooms.

Drinks were terrible. I never had a single good drink on the boat other than the wine at night. I didn't even realize I was picky about my drinks since I've never had that issue before.

Pool area is entirely too small for a ship this size. Little to no seating around the pool except upstairs. But since you never once could have found room to dip a toe in the pool it was ok to be that far from it. If they could have put a pool in Vibe or Spice H20 that would have helped tremendously. I never saw attendents walking around the pool area taking drink orders. But the ship has lots of bars so I never thought the wait was long for a drink. They make up for the pool area by having tons of sun deck space. I just like to be able to cool off in thepool.

Lots of activities but hard to plan around reservations for dinner. Every day we had to seriously plan out our next day and it was stressful. I prefer the traditional 6 or 8 dinner, show before or after dinner, smaller activities sprinkled around the ship.

Vibe was nice but the lounge chairs that were behind the cabanas (waste of money IMO) had no view and very little breeze because the cabanas blocked it.

Shanghai Noodles was great but I don't want to eat dinner in the middle of a smokey and loud casino. It would have been easy to add a wall to block that out.

NCL/Getaway seems to be trying to cater to too many types of people: adults, kids, Haven class people, young, old etc. Instead they should focus on a few things and do those well. They're spread too thin.

Very few announcements. Good and bad of course. Since I thought our cruise director was very unentertaining not having announcements was fine. Just unusual.

Why is O'SHehans so large? I would have preferred the restaurant space and then something else in the gaming/bar area.

I don't like the dispensary type toiletries.

No bathrobes!!!!

Sharps containers? I've never seen that before and they were everywhere! How many people are using needles in all the bathrooms? Maybe this is an important thing and I just am unaware?

Our biggest complaint? The fitness center is a complete joke. Small, dark, dingy, ill-equipped. It was the smallest fitness center we've ever seen on a boat and yet this was the biggest boat we've been on. We were getting up at 530 just have space to workout. They had very few dumbbells, no 10#s at all which was an easy fix. Send someone to a place next port you go to. You surely can afford the cost of it. It stank like a locker room bc it was so humid and small. It was the most unpleasant experience we had on the boat and a real shame. I don't know if NCL clientele aren't big into fitness or what. The center had a dedicated spinning room which is not efficient use of space at all. A whole room for 1 class a day that lasts 1 hour? Use that space for other things by pushing the bikes aside like other ships do. Also a dedicated space for TRX and training. Rarely used.

Ok that's it. Please take my complaints with a grain of salt. We enjoyed our vacation but NCL is not the line for us.

Thank you for your review- we were on the same sailing. We also got a kick out of the photographers. We were pretty sure they all had an inside joke going to see who could get the farthest with the most ridiculous pose. I remember one couple straddling a bench facing each other and I'm pretty sure her nose was positioned in his mouth.

"yes yes.. now face each other.....sir, now open your mouth....ok great....ma'am, put your nose in....yes yes beautiful. now smile"

What did you do at the ports?

Norovirus595,

Since I pretty clearly put in my posts that what is important to me isn't necessarily important to others, your comment is not necessary. Plus you don't really have all the information such as time differences etc. Maybe if you have nothing worthwhile to contribute you shouldn't bother.

Ludicrous_Speed, here's what we did in ports. I warn you it isn't too exciting. We go on cruises pretty much to exclusively chill on a beach:

St Thomas - Magen's Bay.

Tortola - Rebel Yell excursion to White Bay, Jost van Dyke. I HIGHLY recommend everyone that has a chance do this!

I, too, agree about the poses those photographers impose on their poor subjects. What’s really funny is people let them. When we eat at LeBistro, we enjoy watching the photographers at the grand staircase. I always think to myself who stands like that?

I’ve been on Getaway twice and going again next month. Always found something good to eat. As a matter of fact, Ludicrous has a thread going with beautiful photos of his meals. Look good enough to eat.

We were on this cruise also and had a good time. You are so right about those photographers. We usually buy at least one photo, but not this time. Four pictures were taken at embarkation and in all of them my husband had his eyes closed. Seriously, couldn't the photographer have taken a second to check his screen and notice this? In Tortola on the pier with the "Sailor Girl" they cut her totally out of the photo with DH.:classic_blink:

We were also on this sailing.  This was hilarious to watch!  We even walked by one of the photographers to try to ask the purpose of a person facing the wall and the language barrier made it impossible to get clarification.  He actually thought I wanted my picture taken that way.  No thanks!

Horribly uncomfortable and awkward looking.

We caught part of the Perfect Couple / Not So Newlywed game on tv from the first or second sea day.  Watching the CD try to squeeze out funny anecdotes from a couple of the female participants who couldn't or wouldn't come up with anything was so painful to watch.  Just move on already!  It was like a train wreck that I couldn't turn away from.

Drinks were terrible. I never had a single good drink on the boat other than the wine at night.

Our group of four have deemed this to be the most inconsistent bar service of any of our cruises.  We attended two different mojito tastings (they had different flavors) and each one was fantastic.  All other mojitos ordered (from the mojito bar!) were far worse.  We even brought it up to Gerli, the ship head mixologist.  She said she would look it in to ... but she seemed busy, like all the other staff.  Other bar issues too, that were a pain, but did not wreck our week.

Sharps containers? I've never seen that before and they were everywhere! How many people are using needles in all the bathrooms? Maybe this is an important thing and I just am unaware?

My husband checks his blood sugar on a regular basis.

Thanks for sharing your review.

I was on this sailing with you guys and the one thing I didn't notice that you all remarked upon were the photographers.  Since we weren't looking to have any pictures done on this cruise I completely ignored them.  I kind of wishing I was paying attention to them now.  Sounds like some fun people watching 😁.

I checked out after reading you wake up at 5am on cruises to work out. Sorry.

And this adds to CC and this thread how?    Your post is totally inappropriate.

To the OP, I was surprised to read your review of the fitness center.  While I agree it was small, I found that I was able to get pretty close to my full workout in each day with the dumbbells, weights and machines they had.  I too was up very early and as I recall was there before posted open time (And it was open).  I actually liked the fitness center on the Getaway.  As for the lack of 10# dumbbells, bad on NCL to not have any (did you check the room they do classes in?).  One thing I recall was the guy doing the classes was a bit of a jerk, throwing me out of the class room even though there were only a couple people in his "class".  There was no reason I couldn't have kept doing my workout in the back of the room.

I considered going into that TRX room when it wasn't in use but figured I'd get kicked out. My experience with cruise fitness centers is mainly on Celebrity and they are head and shoulders above what the Getaway had.

Thank you everyone for your replies! This is why I love cruises so much! everyone can find a line, a ship, a space, that meets their vacation needs! Just because it wasn't our cup of tea doesn't mean it won't work for someone else!

I've been on NCL and Carnival since I started working out faithfully and on both I always go into and use the "class" rooms.  It's usually the only place you can do floor work and that's usually where the mats are.   I've never had a problem, never been kicked out except when a full class was coming in (I think that happened once).  Usually classes are small and the instructors have no problem with you doing your thing in the back, out of the way.  This guy on the Getaway (last November) was just a jerk.  Even trying to talk to him when he was in the fitness center you could tell he wasn't a pleasant person.

We were on the 9:15 Rebel Yell excursion with Captain Claudia as well. Totally agree with you. We had a blast and highly recommend this trip. Interestingly, this was only the 1st or 2nd time she had been out since the hurricane. We were sitting up top with her during the first part of the trip. She said that several boats ended up on top of the Rebel Yell and it took this long to get everything fixed. So happy they are up and running! Awesome day!  Had my first Painkiller too at the Soggy Dollar Bar-Delicious!

Your post reminded me of the smoking issues. This is my third time on the Getaway and never before had I been so aware of the smoke. There were actually people smoking cigarettes in the casino! Do not remember seeing that before. My DH refused to eat in Shanghai Noodle because of the smoke.

I had heard this was one of the first charters Rebel Yell did.
