It is best to take Euro's as that is the local currency for most of the 'Med'

 

You can buy these on board but the rate is not good, same applies for trying to use $ although most will take them you only get a poor rate and all change would be in Euros/cents.

On board spend is by your ships card so your credit card will do for that also most stores in Europe accept C.C.

Make sure you have a chip card and tell the issuer your plans. ATM's are plentiful in Europe, my US card works fine, some ATM's have a 300 euro limit which should be plenty for incidentals. With 9 hours time difference, I assume you're arriving several days early. My bank here stocks euros so I get enough to cover the first 24 hours.
