Upgrade on Oosterdam

Received an upgrade offer for our Nov. 24 seven day cruise on the Oosterdam, 69 dollars for each of us from an obstucted view to a Veranda. What do you think? Sounds pretty good but we liked it better when there was no charges for upgrades. We did get a nice no charge upgrade on the MSC Seaside back in Sept. from an inside cabin to a Veranda.

As CruiserBruce said: there is a difference between an upgrade and an upsell. On an early season Alaska cruise several years ago we had booked early because the rates were less. We live in Portland and would drive to Seattle. HAL makes money if they sell an airfare. They had a lot of people who wanted the early season fare but who wanted to fly in - we were asked if we could sail on a later sailing and offered a QUITE nice upgrade - that cost us nothing AND that put money in our pockets!

$69 per person for an upsell from an obstructed view to a verandah sounds like a good deal to me.

The first thing we checked was to see if it beat the price on the website and it did by 39 dollars plus we got a good deal to begin when we booked on board the Eurodam back in March, bottom line is we took the offer. We had an upsell offer last year on another line and the price was MORE than the website price, what a joke.

The cruise lines are doing what the airlines are doing . Example when flying there are 3 price levels now for economy .One is bare bones ,then there are the next steps up where you can select your seat ;but ,at a additional cost ,then there is still another where you can get more leg room ,at a additional cost .  It will never end because the carriers have now found more ways than Carter has pills to fleece the public :classic_blush:

$69 isn't bad to get a full on verandah, not a lanai.  Can you pick/approve location?  If you prefer aft and they place you forward or across from the elevators.... not worth it.  HAL offered us an upgrade to a suite for $399/for pax 1&2 nothing additional for kids (other than a higher upgrade cost).  Significant savings over the rack rate posted, but not incredible; kept our verandah we had selected at booking.

I've had experience on another line where once you're assigned a cabin through an gty/upgrade/upsell my TA had no problem switching me "laterally" to another room within the same category.  YMMV, but worth checking out what room they assigned you and then deciding whether it's worth the legwork to try to switch the room (or not).

We were able to choose our cabin in what was left in the VA category.

Glad you took the upsell.
