Escargot :)

I've only sailed on Celebrity and love how they offer escargot every day on their dinner menu.  My first cruise with HAL is in a couple of weeks and I was wondering if they also offer escargot daily or do they treat them as a specialty item? 🐚🐚🐚

You won't see it on the main dining room menu on the first night.  But on that night you can order for every night after that.

Stop by the Pinnacle if you are going to eat there, early in the day and order it for dinner that evening.

Thanks KK.  I learned something very useful 😉 I did not know you could do this!

Appreciate that Chinook Wind asked this question!  We are in the same boat as she is (so to speak) sailing the Nieuw Statendam next month as our first HAL cruise, but loving the escargot that Celeb offers in their MDR daily. Can't wait to try the snails on HAL!

Yes, I love that about Celebrity.  My son (then 9) and I ate escarcot and french onion soup every night.  I wish HAL would do the same.

HAL's wonderful French Onion Soup is on the printed menu every night. And by room service too.

If you are going to be on the NS - escargot are on the menu in the Sel de Mer restaurant.

DW, my personal chef, assures me that Escargot is quite easy to make at home.   You can buy those little buggers in a can (they are relatively inexpensive) and they are pretty easy to prepare with garlic butter (mixed with a little wine) or other ways.  DW even bought some empty shells so if she wanted to impress company it is a simple matter to put those little buggers into a shell :).

All that being said, she truly hates how those things look when raw.... :).  Like many folks, we do enjoy those little slugs on cruises.  Based on relatively recent cruises with multiple cruise lines our vote would go to Princess for having the best prepared slugs.  Celebrity would get our 2nd place vote....and that line makes it easy to order escargot at every meal.  HAL would be in 3rd place although almost a toss-up with Celebrity.

Along with fondue, these three require specialised serving dishes and utensil and are very common in the kitchen ware section of thrift shops (some barely/never used - sometimes a set is in its original box).  I've been looking and find canned escargots difficult to find let alone shells (Safeway used to carry them in past decades).

Stayed in a snail farm in the southern fringes of Burgundy some years ago and learnt about the process.  The snails have to be fed a special cleansing diet, extracted, cooked and gutted before they are eaten.  Other parts of France (Charente where Cognac is located) are less fussy.

"Escargot" means "snail" in French, so by definition if you are eating slugs you are eating les limaces, not les escargots.   Taking you by your own word, I'm not surprised that HAL's escargot is not your favorite, since apparently you enjoy slugs and not snails.  I am, however, surprised that any of the cruise lines serves slugs, as (unlike snails) slugs are not commonly eaten (because of their rather foul taste), although I'm sure your DW has a recipe that makes them edible.

ROFL.  And of course lobster is not a bug.   The next time you are looking up "escargot" you might also look up "metaphor."   But if you truly want to always be literal here is an interesting picture:

Must admit that I had no idea this even existed and started to roar when I noticed it comes from the Pacific Northwest

Metaphorically speaking, I trust that your DW uses the image.thumb.png.6ae71cf262f11cf2e150debf2b9ee3e9.png

in your favorite slug dish!!!  Bon appetite, Hank ...

... and now replying literally to your Post above, I take it that you were/are not aware that the image.thumb.png.a5d5125d677f39fe735452d8e1e29da7.png

is a put-on.  No, Hank, "this" (the Pacific Northwest Slugs With Garlic & Herbs) does not exist!!
