Same type of experience on Celebrity.  They jacked up the prices in Sushi-on-5 and on most ships it is fairly empty at all times.  Many people simply will not pay such prices for mediocre sushi.

I agree, I personally would not pay for sushi at all, in fact you couldn’t pay me to eat it again. I tried it, I gagged on it, I will never eat it again.

The sample menus have never displayed hot rocks because only a handful of ships offer them.  If they included hot rocks on the sample menus then someone went on a ship that doesn't offer them, they'd be upset so it's safer to not display hot rocks on the sample menus.

At any rate, it looks like this change has already been reversed by Royal and it's back to the old ways.  For now.

What is a hot rock?

I just googled it, thank you. Do you know if the Anthem of the Seas has hot rocks? I would eat there then if they did.

Thank you in advance.

Don't quote me 100% but I'm fairly certain Anthem did not. We had a group of 9 and not one person got it...and a lot of us like to try new and exciting things, so chances are at least a few of us would have. I just don't think it was offered.

No hot rocks on Anthem.  It tends to be offered on Voyager class and smaller but even that generalization doesn't apply.  Mariner doesn't have hot rocks.

I think the later they put in an Izumi, the less likely it will have the hot rock.

We recently had dinner at Izumi on Serenade.  The food was very good but it’s not a good value at all. It’s price fixe at 50 per person. The ala carte prices are on the menu and, oh my gosh, you would have to eat an enormous amount of food to get $50 worth. My husband and I had 2 sushi rolls and the hot rock. According to the prices on the menu those were valued at $58.  In other words, we left over $40 on the table. IMO, it’s one of the most overpriced things on Serenade.  We won’t eat there again unless they lower the price.

Is it correct then that you must purchase the $49.99 per person at Izumi and that a la cart is no longer available at all on Serenade?   Thanks! ~ Melissa

Assuming they take BOGO bookings now?

The app still shows a la carte pricing.

Thanks!  and of course to add to the confusion the Cruise Planner only shows the $49.99 pp deal.  Maybe a purchase pre-cruise but the a la carte still there once you are onboard.  Will find out in April 😎

I need clarification... I booked reservations for our upcoming cruise while Izumi was Al La Carte pricing. I based making my reservation on the item pricing on the menus at the time (assuming there may be a slight increase). So am I correct that now I am not eligible for the A La Carte pricing I reserved at and must pay $49.99 per person? Do I still get full run of the menu for that price? Is it now unlimited? I am not sure if i should be mad or not.

I agree...I booked on cruise planner when it was a la carte pricing, so obviously charged $0 and got my reserved slot. Since then, it changed to $49.99 and there is a prix fix menu, essentially.  Should be able to view that prix fix menu on cruise planner...but if they follow through with that or say I have to do that, my reservation will be promptly canceled onboard. I can't think of any sushi/asian place that is worth $50 for a prix fix, especially Izumi.

That’s correct. When we booked it pre-cruise we had to pay the 49.99 per person. I am wondering now if we had waited until we boarded would it have been ala carte? The only way we would have gotten our money’s worth is to not have eaten anything else all day and arrive there famished. It’s definitely the most expensive specialty restaurant on the ship.

  • 2 weeks later...

Symphony earlier this month had sushi ala cart, and I think the UDP gave us $35 credit per person.  We got an ok amount of food for that... however, we had the drink package.  With drinks, we would have spent at least $90 I bet...

we were there for dinner

Slightly off topic but we went to Izumi 2 weeks ago for our final dinner at the hibachi top.  Paid the $49 pp charge for the 5 of us.  Did not find the value there.  Same routine from the chef that is found at virtually every hibachi in the states, so it kinda gets old.  Food portions were decent, but I had to beg for an extra lobster tail and they would not bring out or cook any extra fried rice.  With no drink package I had to pay for wine.  For my family of 3 did not find it worth $200 for a 1 dinner show that was stale.

For ala-carte the prices did also seem a bit high.  Good sushi found throughout the US, at these prices for dinner I would pass. Let the market tell RCL that they have outpriced demand.

Personally I think all of the restaurants are over priced. People on these boards and in everyday life are conditioned or feel entitled to receive some kind of discount. I wish I had a dime for every time the line at a retail establishment was held up by someone who was searching for an online coupon. The prices or MSRP are inflated to cover the discounts. To add insult to injury Royal also adds a gratuity to those inflated prices.

And it is all mediocre food.  Fleet wide.

If we can get it a la cart on Indy next week we may splurge if they can make veggie sushi which usually tends to be hard to screw up BUT I won't have high expectations, just could be a fun night if so.  But won't be bummed if not.

Agree 100%. Plus you've already paid for your meal in the MDR.

Does anyone know if the refurbished Navigator O.S. Izumi offers the hot rock?

The cruise planner is only showing a pre fixed menu that does not include Hot Rock for

$49.99. It also says this offer is only available through the cruise planner.

They offer hot rock for dinner.  It's the same menu that other ships without hibachi have.

You can make reservations once on board to eat a la carte.
