Current Seadream I crossing

Was wondering the same thing as I see from Marine Traffic web site just now (815 AM PDT in LA on Friday) that SD1 is still in the second port there - Las Palmas - for the second day in a row after having been in Tenerife a few days ago.  Hmmm.   Hope all is well and welcome any news or intel.  Could be bad weather?  SD1 did just come out of drydock in Lisbon but that shouldn’t explain it.

I have heard from a usually reliable source that they had to put back due to an engine problem.  Flew some experts in.  Would love to hear from some onboard.  39 year old ships tend to have "issues" from time to time.

Jim,  you clearly have better sources.  Sad and concerning to hear especially since she is just out of drydock and presumably underwent some kind of engine check and overhaul during that process.  They’ve been using that same Lisbon shipyard in recent years but with issues albeit smaller ones post-drydock each time on the subsequent TA.  Please share your insights while we all wish crew, guests and passengers a quick repair.

Thanks for the information JIm... and sad to hear this.

We have had problems with SDII leaving dry dock on a number of trips.  They were often related to air conditioner problems and several other issues.

The company should find a reliable dry dock to put into, and then get the necessary repairs and updates done on time.

On board Seadream 1 right now.

We will be in Las Palmas until Thursday, and the boat going to dry dock for repair on Tuesday, Wednesday (earliest available slot). Better safe than sorry.

Then we hopefully we shall head straight to Barbados, with arrival planned for December 8th.

so the TA isn’t cancelled, but 1 week behind. Seadream is taking very good care of us in the mean time including generous options if people have to go home. Unfortunately the St Martin to Barbados trip was cancelled.

On a positive note, the weather in Gran Canaria has been lovely for the past couple of days.

Thanks to The French Guy for the on the ground update.  Glad all are well and per usual SD is taking good care of all concerned.   Please keep us posted as events unfold.  Enjoy the extra time there and may the good weather continue!

I second JES.  Nothing like on the scene info.🍸😎

Thanks, French Guy!  Agree with Beignet Boy -- there were lots and lots of problems on SD II coming out of drydock in Lisbon for the fall 2017 crossing.  Doesn't appear that Lisbon is the best place to go.

And, of course, many of us remember the lost engine on SD I a few years back......

Curious as to any updates you or others can share ... by the looks of things form afar, at least via Marine Traffic’s website, SD1 hasn’t moved in several days and remains anchored offshore in port, not in drydock.  Hope repairs or other arrangements are underway.  All the best to those involved.

Came off for a flight home last Sunday as we had to be back for 2nd December. It took a while for SD to finally accept that she had to go into dry dock again. We were in limbo from the first news on Wednesday evening until 19.30 on Friday. Back to backers get a good deal I understand, but TA pax have been offerd a refund of voyage fare + flight home [economy] which sucks if the original return flight was Premium, Business or First, and moeover on a travel agents non-refundable basis.

The crew as usual were brilliant, but the whole thing has been exhausting, especially trying to re-arrange travel plans over a weekend.

I'm afraid the old girl is tired, and now showing her age.

Dry dock has been delayed twice by the yard, as the ship occupying Seadream 1’s slot has not been released on time. New estimates are dry dock on Friday, and in Barbados on Monday the 10th.

We are now trying to make a decision, as unfortunately real life (the dreaded work thingy) would be a smudge overdue.

the crew has been absolutely fantastic.

Thanks much for the update.  Must be frustrating but glad to hear again that the crew is as always going above and beyond the call of duty with excellent service and other arrangements.  I would imagine a number of passengers have already had to fly home from Gran Canaria or Las Palmas.  Would be curious to learn how many were originally booked on the TA and how many remain with you onboard.  Smooth travels to all.

Awwww, this is so sad.   I adore everything about seadream. The staff, chef, food, size of the yacht- she’s like a second home.   But dang!  Get those engines fixed !  Stop throwing $$$ to accommodate us when there is an engine problem and just replace the damn things.  Okay, I’ve vented.   Merry Christmas

Agree with you cburger100 ... but Jim A and others with a more technical marine background can educate the rest of us on the feasibility of just replacing the engines ... my recollection from past board chats on this important topic is that it is much more complicated given how the engines are interwoven with other critical systems.  All positive thoughts to all impacted by this unfortunate turn of events.  I could be mistaken, but sure seems like SD1 has had more of these issues than SD2, no?

You are correct, JES.  I believe Jim (Roll Tide!) has already commented that it isn't a simple matter of replacing the engines.  It seems they won't fit through the door.  It was SD1 that broke down on the way to the Panama Canal a few years ago, but wasn't it SD2 that had the fire last year that required the ship to be abandoned?  That was an engine issue, too, if I remember correctly.  What if they put up a sail and clamped a couple of Evinrude's onto the marina?  Or, they can do like the Queen Mary I and just plant one boat on a Caribbean island and one on an island in the Med.  Keep the crew, keep the cuisine, keep the TOY bar.  Just don't go anywhere.  Zimmy and I would book a week or two.

Love it and such a positive post, but let’s get real.  I mean REAL.   She’s a great yacht, we clearly are smitten with the crew, I mean we ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ them, and the Chef, OMG, and geez everyone on board - well please - we can send men to the moon lickity split, but can’t modify this gal to get all of us around on the Earths magnificent waters ?   I pray 🙏 someone genius comes up with a solution.

TrapperZ ... thanks for the confirmation.  Wasn’t the fire incident you mentioned on SD1 as well?  Of course we all assume, quite correctly no doubt, that the twins are a pair - they couldn’t really operate with only one of them, so let’s all pray for a solution soon.  A check via Marine Traffic just now (6 AM EST 30 Nov) shows SD1 still waiting for room at the shipyard for drydock, so that suggests yet another delay.  My better half and I said if only we were both retired (that’s next year) we would call up and fly over to escort her on the eventual TA!  Given the realities of life for those onboard as others posted, most of the original passengers will have made other arrangements to get home by now.  Thanks again to cburger100 and TheFrenchGuy plus Jim A (Roll Tide!) for all insights.
