Going to Nassau - can I use coins from nearby islands?

Recommended Posts

I am going to Nassau in the Bahamas next month, and have quite a few coins from neighboring Carribean islands, many of which have roughly the same size and value. The Cayman Islands, for example, have 25 cent coins that are nearly indistinguishable from those in the Bahamas - same weight, composition, etc. and a slightly different design - and Cayman ones are technically worth slightly more, but I'm not going to the Caymans.

Can I use Cayman or Eastern Carribean quarters in the Bahamas? Has anyone seen intermixing of coinage among the neighboring islands, like we do with Canada and the US? I don't want to get anyone (including myself) in trouble, but if the locals don't mind getting Cayman or neighboring island coinage as tips or payment for small items, I'm happy to use them.

Would love to hear from anyone with actual on-the-ground experience with coins in these islands, as to whether or not they'd be usable/I should bring them as tips or to spend on the island. Thanks!
