Where to stay in Edinburgh

My husband and I will be visiting Edinburgh for approx 4-5 days next fall and was wondering if anyone could recommend a clean, comfortable and central hotel, B & B or guest lodge to stay in.

The only place I stayed at was fine but too far out from the Golden Mile. I suggest you look fro something reasonably close or that has public transport at it's door. Try Trip Advisor for ideas and then compare with booking direct or through hotel booking agencies.

Good luck, it is a great place to visit. If you are going around the time of the Tattoo, book as early as possible.

Never stayed right in Edinburgh, but lived in St Andrews for many years.

 

In addition to checking out downtown Edinburgh hotels, suggest checking out  B&B's in Fife that are close to Leuchars, Kirkcaldy or North Queensferry train stations. Those 3 stations get all the express trains, with Leuchars being about 1 hour to the centre of Edinburgh. Kirkcaldy about 45 mins and North Queensferry about 20 mins.

If you stay a minimum of two nights in a UK hotel it is possible to book a "Rail Inclusive Break" through people like superbreak.com.  Look for rail inclusive deals.  I did a three night break in Edinburgh a while back using a central four star hotel.  First class return travel from London, including snacks and drinks was £45 each person PLUS HOTEL COST, at a discount.  Any level of hotel can be used including budget lodge hotels and you can start anywhere in the UK, not just London.  You can alternatively just book a discounted hotel through them.  My experience is that cruise passengers are not usually arriving/leaving in Edinburgh.  If you want just train tickets trainline.com will get you advance purchase tickets at a discount.  Collection of tickets from this latter system is by using a six letter purchase code in conjunction with your original still valid at time of travel credit card presented at the UK train station to the ticket counter or an automated ticket machine.

Hi Barb,

If your staying in Edinburgh there are loads of options. Edinburgh city centre isn't very big and there a couple of Budget chains like Premier Inn and Apex...The Apex hotel in the Grassmarket area would be a good option.. Although Edinburgh is busy most of the year,  August-November  is a good time to visit as the weather is still reasonable(especially good if you want a day trip or two further north) and you should pick up a reasonable rate for your hotel..As an Edinburgh resident I can only say you'll have a great time and if I can be of any further assistance I'd be glad to help.

We've stayed at the Premier Inn, Edinburgh East Hotel.  It's basic  but breakfast is included and if you are thinking of hiring a car, parking is free.  There is a bus that stops just outside the hotel which goes into the centre of Edinburgh which is just 2 miles away. They often do offers so may be worth keeping an eye open.

 

BTW one place to visit is the Royal Yacht Britannia. Definitely worthwhile.

Agree with Apex Hotels have stayed at 2 in Edinburgh and are definitely our hotel of choice, very happy with price booking direct with the hotel and that price usually includes breakfast.

Such good info. Six of us are doing a transatlantic from Southampton in October and are thinking about visiting Edinburgh for a week then traveling to the ship.  Our dilemma is getting to Scotland from heathrow then to the ship from Scotland.  Any suggestions are appreciated.

When flying into UK, we normally have Edinburgh as our final destination. However, a couple of times when flying on points we could only get flights as far as LHR. When travelling with lots of baggage, getting a connect flight LHR to EDI was prohibitively expensive for excess baggage.

 

Therefore, we took the Heathrow Express to Paddington and then taxi to Kings Cross Station, where we caught the Virgin East Coast up to Leuchars. Trains leave for Edinburgh about every hour. If you have lots of baggage getting it into the racks may be a challenge, so we usually opt for a 1st Class ticket.

 

If going to Glasgow, trains leave from Euston Station.

 

Posted fares are expensive, but we find the advance tickets are very reasonable. If taking a few long rail journeys, check the various discount cards available, as they can save you money. We got the seniors (> 60) and saved money on a return to Glasgow + single to London.

Flybe airlines fly from Edinburgh and Glasgow to Southampton and also Heathrow to Edinburgh. 

 

please try and visit Glasgow when in Scotland. We have plenty of things to see and do. The train to/from Edinburgh/Glasgow takes approx 1 hour and the bus is a wee bit longer.

The Premier Inn York Place has good comfortable beds and an ample buffet breakfast. The tram from the airport stops outside and it is convenient for the train and bus stations.

Going a stop or two along the main train lines from Edinburgh can significantly cut the price of accommodation (even taking into account the train fare). The cost of an evening meal in these other towns is also better value so you could spend the day in Edinburgh then go back locally to eat at night. You can google for a variety of hotels, everything from good basic Premier Inns to 5 star accomodation and all much cheaper than central Edinburgh.

 

The high speed Edinburgh to Glasgow train line has several stops which offer good accommodation at a much lower price and also some local attractions of their own eg

 

Linlithgow is just 15 minutes by train and has Linlithgow palace, the summer palace of the Stuart Kings and Queens.

 

Falkirk is about 25 minutes by train and has the Kelpies, Callander House and the Falkirk wheel.

 

The Dunblane line goes to the city of Stirling in about 40 minutes, Stirling Castle, the Wallace Monument etc

If you are staying 4 or 5 nights as you mention, you may prefer a small apartment, so you do not have to eat all your meals out, and have a little space to spread out.  We stayed in Edinburgh at the Chester Residence on Rothesay Place.  It is an apartment, but you also have some hotel services, and it was wonderful, we were very very happy there.  We were able to walk to Princes Street and up to the Castle.  We actually walked everywhere, and also were able to walk to train station to go out to Linlithgow for a Jousting Tournament which was so much fun.  We stayed a week, and loved Edinburgh, and found so so many things to see and do.  The Queen was in town so we could not go into Holyrood, but we saw all the people lined up in their Sunday best, with fabulous hats, and some in formal kilts, getting ready to go in for a garden party.  For an easy day out of the city, but close by, we took a boat out to Inchcolm Abbey, from SouthQueensferry, we booked before we got there, and packed some snacks,  and stopped at beautiful Botanic gardens on way back.  You will have an awesome trip, cannot wait to go back.

We will be in Edinburgh in June 2020 after a transatlantic from NY to Dover.  We have rented a small apartment through VRBO that is right on the Royal Mile and walking distance to everything.  Much cheaper than a hotel and can cook some meals. Just an idea for the OP.
