CALLING ALL SMOKERS GOING ON THE EDGE!!

Hi !

 

I am sure that we smokers would  like to enjoy a cigarette after dinner, or in between show and dinner, while enjoying a martini or espresso or just taking a break from  the casino, without going all the way up to Deck 14.  Let's try and get Celebrity's attention and add a little space for us on Deck 5.  It would be so appreciated!!

 

Comment in numbers and let's get this viewed by Celebrity.

If the smoking areas are more limited than other ships, then I've finally found a reason to book the Edge.

Anywhere someone could smoke on deck 5 would affect the areas around it.  Also I don't think smokers realize that when they run out nearby to smoke and return to the inside of the ship, the smoke still in their lungs gets into the ventilation system. I know on Oceania near the  observation lounge there is a smoking area and I have to hold my breath til I can get into the elevator or  I am overcome with second hand smoke. Cabins nearby above would smell it.  Also Eden in the back making those areas undesirable for most people. Is taking the elevator up in a few minutes that difficult?  This is coming from me someone who has never smoked.

I offer you a suggestion in the kindest spirit.  Why don't  you consider giving up the cigarettes and with the money you save each year you might be able to afford another cruise.

Brief recap from what I've read of the smoking areas and changes that have happened since the ship was built.

 

When the ship was planned or came across before passengers, there were 2 or 3 smoking areas.

 

Deck 15 Starboard Aft Sunset Bar - Remains unchanged

 

Deck 5 not sure where - Maybe Port Aft covered area outside of Eden? - Removed (or moved to 15?) following complaints on first 2-day media cruise Nov 23rd

 

Deck 15  Mid-ship above pool deck - first on Port side then moved sometime after Dec 15th to Starboard side above Mast Grill around the stairway that leads from pool to hot tub.  Apparently there's a vent on the Port side there that was blowing smoky air into the Solarium.  That's why I'm not sure if this was an originally planned area or created when they removed the one on 5 and realized they needed something protected from the rain.

 

I haven't heard about where the complaints came from when it was on 5.  It doesn't seem like there's many areas that it would affect, except for Eden itself and maybe a couple cabins above.  Maybe an air curtain on those doors if they don't already have one would help that and cut down on the amount of smoke that's transferred in, most of which is in hair/clothing not lungs.  I'm guessing there will be more complaints from the stairs/restaurant by the pool deck.  If there is a smoking area anywhere on the ship, someone is going to complain, so my guess is X just needs to figure out a way to minimize the complaints.

My DH quit smoking seventeen years ago after several attempts to stop.

He put aside money each week for a year that he would  have spent on cigarettes.

Those savings were used for a cruise to celebrate his success.

With the cost of cigarettes being in the $13.00 a pack range now in our area, saving that money over spending it on smoking, would certainly pay for a great vacation .

True, otherwise we'd still have smoking in Casinos and Balconies, but it'll be another 10-20 years before they completely remove smoking from cruise ships.  So there will be at least one area somewhere on board.

No, but it is inconvenient.  My last cruise was HAL and they only had one small area up top.  I bet we spent an hour or two over the whole cruise on the elevators.  I did it without complaint, because like most smokers that I've encountered, I don't like to inconvenience my fellow passengers because of my choices.  Thanks to you and RDC1 bringing it to my attention, I will probably be including a comment about my inconvenience on all future post-cruse questionnaires.

Thanks, I did not realize cigarettes were expensive or bad for my health.  You are the first people to tell me this.  I shall quit immediately.

Just wanted to comment that Celebrity started to really restrict smoking in 2008.  We did two cruises on Celebrity that year.  The first one was in the spring, and smoking was allowed on one side of the casino.  On the second cruise, in the fall and on the same ship, the casino was entirely non-smoking.  Their restrictive smoking policy clearly generates customer loyalty, and I for one support it.  The suggestion regarding "comments in numbers" has me commenting that highly limited smoking areas are preferred by this Celebrity cruiser who spends 60 to 90 days a year on a Celebrity ship.

Aurora it makes me wonder how many of them do indeed use their balcony during the night time hours. How do they go that long without smoking? This seems to have been a problem reported on Edge that smokers were using their balconies - although not supposed to - and with the IVs it was drawing the smoke into the ventilation system.

No, I apologize, I was overly harsh.

 

I'm a fairly light smoker.  On a cruise I'll probably smoke 5 or so cigarettes a day and maybe 1 cigar a week.  On land I'll go weeks between cigarettes and months between cigars.  I do enjoy them after a good meal or when drinking and gambling (at the same time, weird I know).  So of course, those are the two most inconvenient times to go up to 14.  On vacation, I also drink a lot more and eat a lot more and gamble a lot more and exercise a lot less.  So I see my vacations as a time to splurge and do the bad things that I don't normally do.

 

So, it just irks me a little when I think, "it's inconvenient for me to do what I want," and the response is, "then just don't do that."  Especially with smoking, I'm pretty sure that everyone with more than a middle school education knows that smoking is bad for their health and I don't appreciate people telling me how to spend my money.

 

As to "customer loyalty, and comments in numbers", I think for the most part smokers have gone along with the restrictions and not made complaints because we do realize that second hand smoke is an issue that will affect the health and comfort of those around us.  I think if it were completely banned from ships before 10-20 years then they'll start to see those complaints and a lot more rule breakers.  I do think that everyone should follow the rules.  I think I remember reading, maybe the same thing you did, about smoking on the balconies, but I thought it was more speculation than a reported problem.

 

On the same but different note, I just re-watched The Hunt for Red October (1990) and someone offered Jack Ryan, played by a very young Alec Baldwin, a cigarette ON A SUBMARINE.  So we have come a long way.

Someone did have the issue on Edge because they said it smelled of smoke in the cabins due to a different system from when all balconies were open air whereas now only can be partially opened so it gets into the ac filtering system.

To the OP -- you are picturing, I think, the large deck 5 "promenade" areas on other ships -- where there are chairs, and often even loungers. Edge doesn't have these.  The "promenade" is very narrow, and that space has been claimed to make the interior public areas wider.  I'm not saying that they are impossibly small but they are not what you are used to seeing.  It would mean that any smoke would definitely waft upward to the staterooms above.  

 

The area on 5 out side of Eden actually takes quite a bit of walking to get to.  You have to go through the "cave" or climb the stairs outside of Blue.  It isn't all that easy to access, not like popping outside on the S class or M class ships.

Second hand smoke from Deck 5 can drift into almost any balcony on the starboard side of the ship particularly the lower few decks of balconies.  The problem is usually more severe on port days and can force many non-smokers off their balconies.  Many non-smokers will not book a balcony cabin anywhere on the starboard side of the ship to avoid the issue.  If it is true that the Edge has eliminated Deck 5 as a smoking area, this will reopen about half the ship that we avoided.  I'm sorry that smokers may feel inconvenienced if smoking on Deck 5 is eliminated, but I never understood why it has been permitted.

No worries to all you Non Smokers.  I follow the rules, go smoke in the designated smoking areas and NO, I don't smoke on the balcony and NO it isn't difficult to take the elevator!  I wonder how long it will take for someone to complain that the elevators are too slow and blame it all on the dreaded SMOKERS!  LOL!  

 

I just have one tiny little ask to you Non Smokers...please don't pass by the smoking area and give us dirty looks, wave you hand in disgust and comment on us smoking.  That is very irritating as you have the entire ship, so please leave us smoke without feeling like we are to be BURNT AT THE STAKES because we are enjoying our cigarette.  

 

It's all good folks.  I will be on vacation on a cruise.  Can't get better than that!  Live and let Live.

Will do.  No negative reaction from me.  I won't be sailing on the Edge any time soon but if you find your way onto one of the S-class ships perhaps we can have a beer.

Anything  outside of EDEN would be terrible...the Sunset and aft Verandas and those cabins would be negatively impacted.. cabins there.already have issues with EDEN loudspeaker noise.

 

DH smokes cigars... and will go wherever he is permitted...usually on an upper deck, hopefully where he can get a scotch.

 

Cigarette smokers probably need to smoke more frequently....hope a convenient space is  located that has the least impact on others.  It is important that X empties the butts  frequently and makes sure none are smoldering..That was an issue at the pool deck smoking area on Infinity...yuck!

What about e cigarettes? I’m not a smoker so I don’t know if those are allowed - never had a need to check. I know it’s no substitute for a cigar but it could be good enough in a pinch if you are comfy and don’t feel like riding an elevator.

E-sigs are treated just like cigarettes for a lot of reasons.  They are prohibited nearly every place cigarettes are prohibited.

Some of the smokers like my husband are not members of CC - I do all the planning for our cruises, he just hears all the information on CC from me.  I just think that starting a thread like this is a lost cause  because I've seen how most people don't seem to understand that smoking is an addiction and is hard for some people to quit - like alcohol and drugs from the previous threads.  I don't smoke but I also respect those who abide by the rules and smoke only in the designated areas - it is after all a legal substance. I will call out people who don't abide by the rules.  I am amazed though at those guests who wander into the smoking section of the ship and complain about the smoking as if they owned the place.

 

Anyway, we are on vacation - this is our first Celebrity and we'll see how my husband feels about it.  Smoking is the least thing that determines whether we enjoy our vacation.  He is sure to let me know how he feels about the Edge in which case we may select another cruise line for our next booking.  That should make everyone happy.
