At Sea

 

Yesterday, as we were getting ready to leave San Antonio, the captain mentioned that we were heading to some heavy seas.  Although we did not need to go very fast to our next port, he said he was going to increase speed and perhaps outrun the bad weather and to make the stabilizers work better.  We did have a rocky night and I heard some people say they had been sick.  By time for me to go to Knitters and Stitchers things had calmed down a great deal.  We had about 10 present.

 

Lunch in the Lido (not very good jerk chicken) before afternoon trivia.  We had 12 out of 17 and tied for the win.

1) Michelangelo’s statue of David is how tall (not including the pedestal) – life size, 7 feet, 11 feet, 13.5 feet or 17 feet?

2) The “Golden Lion” is the highest prize at which film festival?

3) The currency of North and South Korea shares the same name.  What is it?

In arts and crafts we made a braided cord using a very interesting “loom” called a Kumihimo.  It made a very tightly woven cording. 

 

My travel agency had a dinner for us in Canaletto (the additional fee) Italian restaurant on board.  Patty, Sherita, Andrea (all from our Cruise Critic roll call), and I ate together.  We all chose a salad, lasagna, and gelato.  There also was a delicious chocolate cake.  Because of dinner we missed evening trivia.

 

I went to the evening show at 8 (it was packed) featuring “The Divas of Motown”.  It was very well received.

 

During dinner we had gotten to our next stop, Isla Robinson Crusoe.  We were not scheduled to arrive until 8 am tomorrow but because of our increased speed last night we arrived over 12 hours early.  Since sunset tonight was not until 9:24 pm I went out on my deck after the show to take pictures of this remote location.

Kathi, I think I had better give up on the trivia questions as I am not doing to well.  I felt really bad when I missed the question of Michelangelo's David, since I saw the statue in Florence and I thought it was only 13.5 feet tall, and I was debating with myself if maybe it was only 11, so I am a poor judge of heights anyway.  Hope you are enjoying the cruise.

Isla Robinson Crusoe, Chile

 

Likely you have heard of Robinson Crusoe, Daniel Defoe’s famous fictional character who was shipwrecked on an island.  But have you heard of Robinson Crusoe Island?  A real person, Scotsman Alexander Selkirk, was actually stranded on this island that was then called Mas a Tierra, one of the then uninhabited Juan Fernandez archipelago.  Some believe that Robinson Crusoe’s adventures were at least partly based on Selkirk’s (although Crusoe’s island was in the Caribbean).  The island was renamed n 1966 to capitalize on this and to help attract tourists.

 

The island is less than 19 square miles and only has a little over 800 residents as of the last census.  Its most important industry is the spiny lobster trade.  There is electricity and satellite connections for TV and the internet.

 

I took the tender over at 10:30 and walked around the flat land near the pier.  Some of my friends hiked up one of the mountains.  There are a couple of cafes, small shops (not much bigger than a walk-in closet), a tourist information center and a post office.

 

I returned around noon and lazed away the afternoon.  After lunch I sat out by the Lido pool where the temperature was lovely with lots of sun, alternately knitting and reading.

 

At 4:00 trivia we did not do well with only 12 out of 19.  The winning team had 18!

All present for dinner. I had a Greek salad, delicious tomato soup, orange ginger pork (also delicious), and Pavlova for dessert.

At Sea

 

My morning, as usual, began with Knitters and Stitchers.  We had 11 or 12 present.  I started on a new shawl. 

 

Went to the Lido for lunch at 11:30 and then to afternoon trivia.  We won with 15 out of 22!

1) True or false – The first cotton candy machine was invented by a dentist?

2) Which South American territory hosts the launches for the European Space Agency?

3) Which animal has not been used by the US military during war – bats, dolphins, monkeys, or chickens?

4) Which decade saw the last execution at the Tower of London – 1880s, 1890s, 1920s, or 1940s?

5) Which water animal has the densest fur of all mammals?

 

In arts and crafts we made a small purse.

 

At 4 pm we had something rather unusual – complimentary Bingo.  I had heard previously that they were not getting enough people to play Bingo.  Most of us thought that the free Bingo was a way to drum up some business.  There were four games and each person (and there was quite a crowd) received a free card for each one.  Prizes included spa passes, lunch at the Pinnacle, a meal at Canaletto, casino passes, and gifts from the shops.  Pat, Sherita, and I sat together and played but none of us won a game.

 

Today is Robbie Burns’ day and there was Scottish and Celtic music with Stevie in the Crow’s Nest at 8:45.  I decided to eat with my “second table” at 5:30.  (They set a place for me now.)  I had a salad, sweet and sour chicken, and a vanilla sundae.

 

We did not do as well at evening trivia with 12 out of 18.  The winning team had 15.

3) What US state capital has the oldest city park?

Sherita, Pat, and I stayed in the Crow’s Nest (working on our knitting and crocheting) until the Burns Night program began at 8:45.  I stayed until about 9:45 before returning to my cabin.

Castro, Chile

 

There were very few excursions available for Castro and none of them really appealed to me, so Pat and I decided to walk around and look for wool. There was a good market down from the pier and we each bought a few things and then decided to hike up (and I do mean up) to the town square.  We visited a grocery store, a variety store (I needed glue to help repair a pair of shoes), the Cathedral, and then to a mall.  In the mall we each had a donut at Patagonia Donuts and an orange juice.  We then headed back to the tender pier down about a million steps.

 

At 3 pm there was a Chilean Food and Wine Festival by the Lido pool.  The cost was $25 but you could have all the Chilean wine you could drink.  I did not participate.

 

We tied with two other teams for the win in afternoon trivia with 14 out of 18.

1) The world’s longest fence (3488 miles) is in which country?

2) The “w” in motor oil (like 10W40) stands for what?

3) Which country has the largest national park as well the most northerly?

4) Formed in the U.K. in 1961, this organizations logo shows a lighted candle surrounded by barbed wire.  Name the organization.

At trivia, Linda mentioned an Australia Day celebration in the Crow’s Nest at 7:30 so I decided to eat with my second table so I could go to it.  I had shrimp cocktail, fruit, leg of lamb, and Pavlova with ice cream for dessert.  There were Aussie decorations in the dining room and the servers were dressed for the occasion.

 

Evening trivia was in the Showroom at Sea which has horrible lighting but was the only venue available.  We had 14 out of 17 but the winning team had 16.

4) What is the most common symbol on flags?

5) Blue, green, red, and yellow are four of the colors of the Olympics.  What is the fifth?

 

Pat and I then went up to the Crow’s Nest for the Australia Day celebration.  It was nothing like ones I have been to on previous cruises.  Part of the Crow’s Nest was blocked off for a private cocktail party just for the Australians on board.  About 45 minutes after it was over, Stevie (the piano guy) played a couple of Australian songs.  That was it.  Very disappointing.

 

Returned to my cabin and worked on my pictures until it was time for the 10 pm show.  The show featured pianist Jason Lyle Black who played medleys of TV themes, movies themes, and even created music from notes called out by the audience.  Good show.

Puerto Chacabuco

 

This was our first port day with not very nice weather.  It sprinkled occasionally and was windy with only a high in the upper 50s.  Although it was a port day it was a very restful day for me.  I slept late and left for the tender just before 11:00 am.  We were met at the pier by a free shuttle to the market set up in geodesic domes.  There were a few booths and I bought some souvenirs as well as a few gifts.  I walked around a little afterwards but, being Sunday, most things were closed.  I was back on the ship by shortly after noon.

 

I had a leisurely lunch in the Lido and then picked up a hot chocolate at the Java Café and sat and knit for a while.

 

Afternoon trivia at 4:00 was tough and we ended up with 13 out of 21.  The winning team had 17.

Just prior to departing the captain announced that the weather had deteriorated and we would likely have some rough seas starting around midnight.  He also said that the high tomorrow would only be around 50F and there was a good chance of rain.

 

Before evening trivia I finished shortening the sleeves on the jacket that my travel agency gave me.  They are unisex and made for people with long, long arms.

We won evening trivia with 17 out of 19!

After trivia, Pat, Patty, Sherita, and I had another hilarious discussion which cannot be repeated here!  We then went to see Pat’s new cabin.  She was having noise and water issues with her previous one so she is now a neighbor of mine.

 

All of us were present for dinner.  I had French onion soup, Caesar salad, brisket, and arroz con leche.  After leaving the dining room I sat and talked with Pat and her husband, Tom.  I skipped the show which was a Tango show.
