We have not sailed Holland before. Mainly because of their past smoking policy. Very allergic. Recently we decided to book a trans Atlantic. I understand from Holland’s site that smoking is prohibited on balconies. But after reading some reviews I am concerned. Many say that passengers still smoke out on their balconies and even after reporting the problem the crew does nothing. Am I just a bit over concerned??

We always have a balcony. Since the smoking rules that prohibits smoking on the balcony, we have always had at least a couple of days where we smelled smoke from someone smoking. There is also a portion of the aft outside lido deck that is dedicated to smokers. That makes getting anywhere near that side of the deck miserable. Also smoking in the casino except for a few non smoking nights. One cruise we also smelled marijuana while out on our deck. We did not call to complain for either smoke or marijuana. It didn’t last long. By the time someone would have come to investigate(assuming that they would), the smell would have been long gone

Couple of times I have smelled e-cigs being used. I hate that smell almost as much as real cigs.

Worst for me is the smell of smoking in the casino on Koningsdam, which drifts down the stairs to the Lincoln Center stage and Billboard Onboard. Totally unnecessary and unacceptable in present day.

I am hoping that the issue of the smoke form the Casino is addressed with the design changes on the Nieuw Statandam!

There are always some rule-breakers....

If it were a cabin close enough to mine, and was a real issue... I would more than 'report'... If it were not addressed at first report, the second time I would go, personally, and request staff/security accompany me back to my cabin to see, identify, and address the problem.

The easy solution to the Casino problem is to just adopt Celebrity's policy and allow no smoking inside the ship...including the casino.

Thank you!! I love HAL, but Celebrity's smoking policy is such a breath of fresh air...pun intended! We did have issues on Koningsdam with the smoke in the casino. I had to leave the casino in the evening long before I would have liked, but it became unbearable the later it got. That being said, I did not experience any smell of smoke from our balcony or anywhere else outside. We just stayed away from smoking areas and it was not a problem.

That does seem to be a rather obvious solution. I would g uess the decision makers at HAL have 'thought' of it but nixed the idea

Wish smokers could be more considerate of others. Smokers in the casino will save me $$. Back in the day there was a wall of smoke in front of casino entrances. Yuk.

Confused . How can you call a smoker inconsiderate when they are smoking in one of the few permitted areas on the ship (assuming it is a ship that has a smoking area - some don't) ? And...

A wall of smoke? Most HAL ships have 2 entrances to the casino IIRC (haven't said on the King). (Part of the casino is non smoking - a big part). I am at a loss how you can make a statement about a wall of smoke when you haven't sailed HAL (as per your post below posted today).

Sad to hear the bad end ugly. We are booked on a 24 night. I was so looking forward to it. But am saddened about reading these issues. Never sailed HAL. Always thought it was billed as a top notch line. Seems cost cutting and ship design are not I was expecting.

I've been on two cruises in a balcony cabin since the change to the smoking policy, and have not seen or smelled anyone smoking on their balcony.

Agree. Have been on several cruises since the policy changed and have not encountered any smoking on balconies.

We had a corner aft, deck 7 on K'dam and I did smell smoke from time to time. Since the smoking area was on the opposite side of the open deck, I don't think it would have come from there, as we've never noticed smoke on a corner aft before. But it could have, especially if smokers were enjoying the round platform on the port side. The smoking area was heavily used on our cruise--the aft part of the buffet on that side smelled of smoke, whether the doors were open or not. So I figured there was probably enough smoke to have drifted down to my balcony.

I never considered HA because people were permitted to smoke on balconies. Then the policy changed.

We leave on our first HA cruise this week, If smoke is a problem, this cruise will be our first and last on HA.

I think you can rest assured that smoking on balconies is a non-issue now. Enjoy your cruise!

We were in the Koningsdam for 21 days in March and I was wondering why they still allow smoking inside the ship. The casino was basically forward/mid ship on deck 3. To get from one end of the ship to the other end inside the ship on deck 3 you needed to pass through the casino and the stink of cigarette smoke. Even on non smoking nights it still had cigarette odor. The worst part of allowing smoking in the casino on the Koningsdam it was right above the Lincoln Center and Billboard and the smell of cigarette smoke filtered down into these two areas on deck 2. The smell was very noticeable on deck 2 so if they going to allow smoking on deck 3 and it stinks up deck 2 why not go ahead and allow smoking on deck 2. It wouldn't make much difference. Before you go off on that comment I don't want that to happen I'm just think it wouldn't make much difference because of the smell is already there on deck 2. I know people are addicted to smoking and on sea days it would be tough on them. Why not just limit smoking to the sea view pool area where it is already allowed and get it completely out of the inside of the ship. People say the smoke stink problem will be fixed in dry dock. Easy fix is ban smoking inside the ship altogether.

Many of us are never exposed to smoke in our home states and i agbree it is noxious when on the ships and we have it wafted at us. So few of us want any thing n to do with it, logic would say ban it but my 'gurss ' 'is they think the revenue will be better if ermit it. They know the numbers, whereas we do not. Eveything on a cruise ship can be traced back to monery.

I’d like to know why they don’t allow it at all in the Eurodam casino but allow it on a brand new ship like the Koningsdam.

Yet another reason why we are “one and done” on the K-dam.

I m very glad you pointed out how bothersome the smoke can be on K'dam....... A good reason for me to be in no rush to sail her. i have had invi tations f from two friends to join them for a cruise on K dam ad n while I was very tempted, I declined both. now I know I made the right choice

That sums it up nicely. We lived in Las Vegas for 13 years. Tried to basically stay away from casinos because we knew what the odds of winning are. The times we went, however, the preponderance of gamblers were smoking. Even saw one little old lady wearing an oxygen cannula and smoking a cigarette! Since smokers are gambling with their health/lives, I suppose we can surmise smokers are gamblers!

I'm sure it is. Hope they figure now much they have to discount this cruise to fill the ship. We did the same 21 day cruise on the Noordam March 2013 and it costed us $500.00 more for an inside cabin then our cruise on the Koningsdam costed us for an outside cabin March 2018. Maybe if they would ban smoking inside the ship maybe they would makeup the revenue lost in the casino by not not having to discount the fares so much. Just a thought.
