That's terrible and a fire hazard.  Did you report it to your concierge?  One of them should have reported it to the proper personnel. 

 

Yes, smoking is allowed in a designated area on aft Lido Deck, usually on the side that has the bar.  Smoking is also permitted on certain evenings in the casino.  Other than those two areas, I am unaware that there is any other designated smoking spots.  Smoking is prohibited on your balcony and in your cabin/bathroom.

No we never reported it just simply because we did not think they would really be able to do anything about it. But for our next cruise we have booked on the port side to avoid the smoking area.

I don't blame you, but someone in authority should know about the butts ending up on balconies below this area.  That's definitely a fire hazard.  Yes, something could have been done.  Extra security may have been posted in the smoking area, or the bartenders/waiters in the area could have been alerted to watch out for passengers throwing butts over the side of the ship.  Either or both of these measures may have led to discovering the identity of the culprit(s) who were endangering others.

Another Smoking Area is on the Sun Deck, I believe, it’s by the Sun Bar.  A friend on a recent Cruise would go up there to lay out.   She said there is beverage Service as well as tables and Loungers and ashtrays.

 

As as far as Cabin Selection we were on Deck 8 both times we’ve sailed on Nieuw Statendam.  Our last Cruise our Stateroom was Aft under the Smoking Area and never smelled smoke or had a problem with finding butts on our Balcony.  Once in awhile you can hear some chair scrapping but not bothersome.  First time on her we were more Mid-Ship on Deck 8 and also no issues.

In my opinion, as a smoker, there are not enough places to smoke on a cruise ship.  Smokers have a 3 by 3 foot area and non smokers begrudge us that.  I get casino rates and If I can’t smoke in the casino, I will not gamble.  I used to enjoy having my morning coffee on my balcony and late at night just sitting out there.  No more. I used to pay for a balcony cabin, but not worth it now. The ships are like being in a jail cell.  I only cruise now when my husband makes me.  There are just too many non smoking rules.

Trying to find out WHAT SHIP Casino's allow smoking!!! looked on another thread but someone got snarky and said the posters had to go to this long.............thread and I have read pages and pages and still not had my questions answered.  I hate smoking in the casino's and thought that HAL had banned it.  is there smoking on the Veendam in the Casino still?

SMOKING POLICY All staterooms, suites, and verandahs are non-smoking. Guests in violation of our policy will be charged a $250 per day cleaning fee. E-cigarettes are permitted in staterooms, otherwise only in designated smoking areas. My comment referred to the Nieuw Statendam as the previous comments concerned the Nieuw Statendam.  The Nieuw Statendam allows smoking in a section of slot machines.  No smoking at the table games.  I know that the Oosterdam and the Zuiderdam do not have smoking in the casino as I have been on these ships recently.  I will be on the Veendam in 3 weeks and the casino should be non smoking.  I will report back here if different.

I posted this same question on a FB post and everyone is telling me that there is smoking in the casino on the Veendam and that it is BAD!   not very happy about this!

To my knowledge that is not determined (or at least made public) in advance of a sailing.  But the non-smoking days are ALWAYS published in the daily program which is delivered to your stateroom each evening.

On a 7 day cruise there are usually 2 gala nights and those are the non-smoking nights.

I've read long ago that they LOOK like regular cigarettes and that someone seeing you in a public space (might be visible on some balconies?) would think you were flaunting the rules.

The only thing I can think of is that the 'steam' from vaping doesn't cling to cabin furnishings like the tar in cigarettes, so the next occupant of the cabin won't complain about the offensive odors.  But there is no reason to believe that 'second-hand vaping' doesn't contain harmful chemicals [esp. nicotine, an addictive drug].  The vaping companies swear that it is perfectly safe, but ... hm... didn't the tobacco companies claim that too?  So I want my environment free of cigars, cigarettes, pipes – and vapers.  BTW my son-in-law switched from a mild cigarette habit to vaping – and now finds it impossible to quit because the nicotine addiction from vaping is even worse than cigarettes.

And yet the FAQ on the website says:

Electronic cigarettes are not permitted in staterooms or in other public areas of the ship other than designated smoking areas.
