I totally agree with you having sailed Koningsdam twice. I have asked about policy on Nieuw Statendam and have been told it has not been decided where guests will be able to smoke. I really hope HAL does the right thing with this brand new ship. Actually I think they have decided just don't what it known that smoking will be allowed in NS casino. They have been changing policies on their other ships.

I was surprised that they didn't make the K'dam casino smoke-free. It was a brand-new (clean!) ship, a perfect time to make that decision.

I'm absolutely not a legal expert, but I'd assume this is why Carnival Corporation registers their ships in foreign countries and hires employees from overseas countries. These types of circumstances would likely reduce Carnival Corporation's exposure to the types of lawsuits you mentioned. One cannot help but feel empathy for employees exposed to passengers' cigar and cigarette smoke, and also likely vaping vapor.

It's more about employee pay and work rules than about avoiding smoke-related lawsuits.

I got off the Koningsdam in Rome two weeks ago after a 14 night Trans-Atlantic. My two favorite places on a cruise ship are the aft pool area in the day, and the casino at night. Unfortunately for me, these are the only two areas on the KD where smoking is allowed. We had beautiful weather for the first week of our crossing and I wanted to enjoy the Sea View Pool and Bar but I couldn't because there was a constant, overwhelming stench of cigarette smoke. It was constant. It was disgusting. You couldn't escape it. And worse, contrary to what the smoking policy states in reply #49, smoking is not permitted on the port side, it is permitted on the starboard side, the same side as the Sea View Bar. I couldn't sit at the bar to enjoy a cocktail at sunset because I was exposed to the foul odors. The wind would swirl around the entire aft deck area and sitting on the port side did not help. Their casino smoking policy is a joke. They say smoking is only allowed while playing a designated smoking slot machine but people were smoking at non smoking machines, and even the non gambling smokers would be walking around in the casino enjoying their cigarettes. That too was constant, and that too was disgusting. And finally, the man in the cabin next to mine smoked on his balcony morning, noon, and night. I reported it to guest services, as well as my cabin steward but nothing was done. He continued smoking on his balcony for 14 days. I couldn't escape the smoke. Not even on my own balcony. HAL really needs to re-think it's smoking policy.

Did you complete a comments card and hand it in to the front desk?

No. There wasn’t enough space on the comment card to say what I needed to say. I made phone calls, I spoke to different staff directly, and I submitted my comments on the post cruise survey. They are now well aware of my sentiments regarding their smoking policy.

It is surprising HAL isn't making the casinos on their new ships smoke-free.

On Eurodam now and had to come on here and search for smoking to see if they changed policy. Have walked all over the ship and have not smelled even one whiff of smoke anywhere. Maybe we are just blessed with a cruise with very few smokers!

Have you been to Deck 9 aft near the Sea View Pool / Bar yet? I believe this is the designated smoking area on Eurodam.

Yes... we have been out there a couple of times. Must have just been the times that there were no smokers!

My feelings on this one is the board of Holland couldn't care less about making the ship healthier for all on the cruise. I was under the impression that there are areas hosting smokers and also areas hosting non smokers. It kills me that I have paid so much to be miserable.

Cool Cruiser I totally hear what you are saying. I did a live chat with HAL the other day to be told there will be smoking in the casino of the Nieuw Statendam. Confirms to me that input on questionnaires and HAL threads really doesn't go anywhere. This is a brand new ship and they could of had a no smoking policy in the casino of Nieuw Statendam.

I'm surpirised and sorry HAL will permit casino smoking on the newest ship.

Like all things on the ships, they likely expect l lower casino revenue if they ban r all smoking I'm sure they have the 'numbers to back it up but I think i it a big mistake. How many will avoid the casino because of smoking vs ho w many would avoid it becuse they cannot smoke?

I'm surprised as well. Why stink up a new ship?

Celebrity does not allow smoking in their casinos... Hard to believe it's hurting them financially.

I wonder how many cruisers forgo booking on a ship where smoking is allowed and would otherwise be in the casinos playing if it were not? That consideration kind of skews those numbers.

I'm a heavy player and will not be in a casino where I can't see because of burning eyes and having clothes that stink to low hell.

I know i'm not alone in this.

I was on that cruise as well, though I started with 10 days in the Caribbean. I could not go near the casino because of all the smoke, and it did drift around the ship like no other. Even on the nonsmoking days, the odor in there was terrible.

I had some excellent crew experiences while on the ship, but the guest services crew, with the exception of Eunice, was hopeless. Yes, they would enter your complaint into their system but no one ever seemed to follow up. I spent way too much time trying to get billing errors fixed, as well as my disembarkation plans. Usually the HAL front desk is pretty good, but not on the K.

That is outrageous that a person can pay for a verandah with the understanding that smoking is prohibited and not be able to use it because HAL doesn't enforce its policy. An excerpt from Post #49: "Any guest who smokes inside staterooms or on verandahs in violation of our policy will be charged a US$250 cleaning fee per day of violation and will risk being removed from the ship for repeated violations."

Perhaps rules are enforced selectively; I expect that the rule against bringing on more than one bottle of wine per person was vigorously enforced. I suppose if an aggrieved passenger emptied a fire extinguisher over the transgressor that person trying to protect his or her health would be removed from the ship.

Viking Ocean is another line prohibiting indoor smoking and they are killing it sales wise. Kudos to them.

The US has made great strides eliminating smoking but it has taken more than 50 years of vehement public health campaigning. I don’t know a soul who still smokes.

Far more Europeans still smoke like tobacco testers than in the Canada.

I realise that, but there is no indication that HAL has different rules for passengers according to what it says on their passports. I recently had a cruise on Cunard from England and, despite the fact there is a higher percentage of smokers in the UK than in North America, the rules were apparently obeyed by all.

I'm a blackjack player and can only play when the tables first open in the morning on sea days until I can't stand it, usually just a couple of hours. Evening hours are just not possible because atmosphere becomes smoke-soaked by that time.

Now, having said that, I'm just off Zaandam. There were two nonsmoking days out of 14 total. On those two days the casino was PACKED -- tables and slots!! You'd think that would tell them something?

There have been many studies (over lots of years) that have shown a high correlation between gamblers and smokers. The most accepted theory is that both gamblers and smokers have an addictive personality. But since a higher percentage of gamblers do smoke then the general population, many casino owners do their best to cater to smokers.
