Hi, we haven't stayed here yet but are booked to stay here in May. But maybe worth a look. Great reviews.

Not a hotel but an apartment.

Oporto Old in New.

We are looking for November of this year. Trying to do the Douro region independently. Will let you know what we decide, if we do this trip.

We are trying to do this trip by ourselves, too. There are lots of day trips from Porto with various companies.

I read there is even have a 'Hop On Hop Off 'bus. :classic_biggrin:

If they go to too many wine tastings, it might be a SOSO bus (stumble on, stagger off). 🍷🍷

Good luck with the planning! Haven't done anything other than buy plane tickets yet.

We spend a total Don five weeks in Porto last year (2 in June in town, 3 in October at The coast at the end of the metro line) and were in Airbnbs.  We were pleased with that decision. We particularly liked being at the coast as it is flat, unlike the city which makes San Francisco look like the flattest place in the US!

i don’t recall seeing a HoHo (or SoSo even) for the vineyards but there are plenty of tours, boats, drivers etc that will let you visit them independently.  We aren’t winos so we ended up doing a day trip upriver. We trained up and then boated back. While no stops it did let us see the beautiful river.

IF you end up with a non hotel accommodation (or I guess even if you do) make sure wherever you’re staying has AC if you are going to be there in the summer months. We had a cold snap in late May early June in Lisbon and almost needed the heat on but had a hot spell while in Porto and for two days all we really did wasn’t shower and lay in front of then fan!

Enjoy Porto, it’s a great city with friendly folks!

Looking for recommendations for hotels in Porto, pre river cruise

We stayed at the 1872 River House. Highly recommend.  Elevator, HOHO right at main entrance, restaurants galore, right on the river and you can see the ships docked across the river. They were very accommodating. A bit pricey but it was worth it to us to have everything within walking distance. They arranged a taxi, and packed breakfast items, for our airport run which was waiting for us early in the am.
