Maybe it is just me .........

One complaint I don’t understand ?

It may just be me, but across the boards (Celebrity, Royal, Princess) there seems to be a growing complaint trend which says something like:

I just returned from my cruise and loved, it BUT was really disappointed that the Captain was not as funny as in past cruises ………… or

I had a great cruise, but am truly upset that the Cruise Director did not personally introduce the evening shows or participate with the other officers in the staff pool volleyball game………….. or

Best cruise ever, but truly miffed there was no Officer sing along or waiter talent show at the end of the cruise………. or

Thinking of booking another cruise, but am concerned who will be the Captain of the ship in 2 years………. or

Loved our cruise, our stateroom attendant was always available and did a great job, BUT he just did not seem interested to listen to my stories about my dog or grandkids……. or

Looking forward to another great cruise, but my luggage tags arrived today and are such a drab and depressing color, maybe this won’t be the best cruise.

I suppose my question is, Why does this matter to so many people ???     Personally, I am happy if the Captain (of a ship or airplane) gets us to our destination safe, that my room (hotel, stateroom, etc) is clean.

Looking forward to my next cruise in 2 weeks regardless of who the Captain is or if he (or she) is entertaining.  :)

WHY does it matter to you?

I don't understand why you care to comment on what some else comments on. Their opinion is just as important as yours and you all have the right to ask/ comment on what ever you want. OP sounds like they feel superior to others IMHO.

I guess that's why they call it CruiseCritic! :classic_biggrin:

Gosh, I thought it was just me!  :classic_biggrin:     While no cruise may be perfect,  I just don't care about many of the things other cruisers are concerned about.  I don't think there is such a thing as a 'bad' cruise (here come the flames...…).  We've been on cruises where a lot of weird things happened and while not funny at the time, we laugh about it now.  I really laugh when I read on Cruise Critic that someone cancelled their upcoming cruise because of what other complete strangers have posted.

I work like a dog so I can vacation. I am happy to be away where I don’t have to cook or clean. Sure, I get disappointed when someone doesn’t respect the rules (perhaps dress a bit too casual in the MDR) but does it ruin my vacation. Absolutely not. And if a crew member does not smile and say good morning, well I just do it first and it is usually reciprocated. I wake up every day and choose my attitude not the attitude of those around me. I can’t wait to leave on my next trip...13 days 🛳

I actually saw this one today.... "he was never there to talk to us"...

Dude, he has no time. He has to clean an X number of rooms, keeping them freaking spotless, and he works 14 hour days 7 days a week.

Is my room clean and everything I need is stocked? Great!

I don't care who the Cruise Director, Captain, Hotel Director, etc., is.

Some passengers are special and think every member of the crew is there to amuse them.

Some passengers are special and like to brag about what good friends they are with a Captain.

Some passengers are special and think the Cabin Steward has nothing else to do.

Some passengers are special and think they should have custom tags.

The simple answer is that some people just like to b_ _ _ _.

Looking forward to my next cruise in 2 weeks regardless of who the Captain is or if he (or she) is entertaining.  🙂

I too am looking forward to my next cruise but will be so disappointed if the Captain, Cruise director, other officers and my Cabin Steward are not waiting in the terminal to tell me jokes as they escort me to my interior cabin.:classic_rolleyes:

I agree with most of the OP's sentiments. The only time the captain ever made a difference was when the CB hit the dock at Redhook, Brooklyn disabling the gangplank delaying our disembarkment by almost 5 hours.

The one that really puzzles me is those who are concerned and may book their cruise :classic_ohmy: based on who the Maitre D' is 🤷‍♀️

The truth is I can only remember a handful of captains from over 50 cruises. “Crash” Nash I remember. Funny guy!

I don’t expect to get closer than five feet away from any of them.

I have dozens of photos of a dressed up me at different ages, weights and hair colors, shaking hands with various captains. Don’t remember them, they don’t remember me.

I don’t recall a single CD. Don’t really recall the names of any stewards. I was pleased with all of them, though.

I only recall the name of one waiter. DH and I were in love with everything about our first cruise. One the last night, I thanked our waiter and said “Joseph, I’ll never forget you”.

he replied “My name is Edward, but there were no extra name tags that said Edward”.

but I was  right, I never forgot him

It's America and people like to vent; I get that; they pay for a vacation and want it to be perfect; but if I went on vacation and every single one of the things happened that is mentioned by the OP above; I may get concerned about this not being the perfect cruise.  If one or two of those happen; it's a non issue for me;  I will even throw in one or two more.

I really enjoyed your comments, and I agree with them, but it just wasn't as good of thread as it could have been. I do not really like the new format of Cruise Critic, and of course this is entirely the wrong font for an observation of this type. It actually impacted on my enjoyment of this thread, but I will still be back on Cruise Critic tomorrow.

I would love to say I don't care... and had I not had this experience- I know I would not care.

I was on a ship that experienced a mid-cruise change of Captains. From the day the second captain boarded, the whole morale of the ship changed And, sadly, it was not for the better.

With that said, I don't cruise for the staff. I cruise for the location and (sometimes) the price.

Just my two cents.

YMMV.

Or any of the other senior staff given that they all have long breaks and passengers are not privy (nor should they be) to their schedules.  Just because someone you like or dislike is on the ship now, it doesn't mean they will be when the next cruise departs, or next month or next year.

The only time the captain made a noticeable difference to me was when he safely guided us through a Typhoon where the waves were hitting my window. No one died ..... that's important ..... and yes some were disappointed with racing to overnight in Busan / 1 less Japanese port
