Princess Caribbean when do upgrades get offered?

Recommended Posts

We've cruised with Princess on 8 separate cruises and never been offered an upgrade prior to boarding.    We did get a surprise upgrade to a full suite on our first cruise with them upon boarding - never did figure that one out and it's never happened again.      If you really want one, it might be worthwhile to call them or your TA and ask if it's possible.

There are three possible offer Princess sometimes makes:

1. Upgrade. This is a free upgrade to a cabin in a higher class. Most of the time the original and new cabin are the same type of cabin (ie. for instance both are balconies). The main benefit is that the new cabin is in a "better" location than the original. You are not always notified by Princess, so you or your TA must be watching. Often your original cabin has been reassigned before you have a chance to object.

2.  Upsell.  This an offer to move to a higher type of cabin (ie from an ocean view to a balcony). Here you or your TA will get an email from Princess with the offer. It will include a phone number to call if you would like to take the offer. Phone calls are processed in the order received. They send out more email than there are available cabins. So first to respond get the deal.

3. Move Over. Here you are asked to give up your cabin. You get a full refund and a free future cruise within limits.

Upsell & Move Over are used by Princess to fill the ship and arrange cabins for all booked cabins. Offers are only sent to people with cabins in the category needed.

Thanks Do you miss the balcony with a window suite?

We booked an ocean view on this cruise, fall foliage, RT from New York, specifically because I was hoping for a bump to one of the Window Suites.  It was a cool weather but port intensive cruise so we would have been okay with the OV but fate worked in our favor.  Nice to get all the suite perks at the OV price.  I suspect many people in balcony rooms  declined the upgrade because it did not have a balcony.

We had a different type of offer just last night (three days prior to boarding). We had booked a balcony guarantee. The offer was to give up the balcony for an inside on the same sailing, with a refund of 100% of our cruise fare.

We do like the balcony, but to sail for free I’ll take the inside!

Is this the Downgrade Fairy? 🙂

In our case it would be a big YES!   Assuming the weather is good, our balcony becomes the equivalent of a 2nd room.  For example, I will normally be awake before DW and I can go out on the balcony, read, listen to music, etc. without bothering DW.  And it is the same in the afternoons when one of us might want to take a nap...and the other can move out to the balcony.

That being said, we would probably also accept an inside cabin (and certainly an outside window) if it meant cruising for free :).
