I go on 6/7 cruises a year. As a smoker - there is no way I would go on a cruise if I couldn't smoke. In fact with the reduction of comfortable smoking areas, I'm considering cutting back on cruising. I know a couple of people who stopped cruising altogether when they banned smoking on balconies.

I used to also but have cut way back on NCL. only one this year and none in 2018. We also lost many of our group to all inclusive  resorts were they can smoke

If it was up to me i'd get rid of smoking areas all together. You can smoke when you're off the ship. Having said that...we recently went on Celebrity and thought they did a great job and placing their smoking areas "out of the way" so we never even smelled it once. One thing we loved is how the Casino was non-smoking. For all those smokers that like to gamble and say "if I can't smoke I won't gamble" there are 3 non-smokers that would gamble if the casino wasn't filled with smoke. Sooner or later the cruise lines will realize this and you'll see changes.

Smoking is legal.  Just like drinking.  I get people don't want to smell it next to them at the pool and stuff.  But - Its open air.  Smokers should get more space than what they had on the Bliss. - When half outside areas on the ship was smoking, all was fine in the world.

PS Cigar smokers get a room in a prime spot on the ship to smoke.  Why can't cigarette smokers have space in a prime spot too?  Or Vapers?

And if cigarette smokers can't smoke where the cigar smokers go, why can people smoke cigars with the cigarette smokers?  They don't all like the smell of cigars

Fine for smokers, but not for non-smokers who couldn't sit on that side, unless they wanted to smell the smoke and maybe that is why they change it.

On my December Breakaway cruise, they had a three sided box for the smokers on the pool deck, but unfortunately there was no door and the smokers would stand outside in front of the smoking box making which ever side where the wind blew unusable, no one would sit in those loungers because it smelled like an ashtray.

I don't get your point... don't sit on that side if you don't like it... you have the whole other side.  Non-smokers who care can sit on the otherside.  non smokers who don't care and smokers can sit on the otherside.  I don't get what was wrong with that...

Clearly the box was too small because more people want to smoke than NCL allowed for

I guess I don't get why so many non-smokers feel entitled.  I am a non smoker.  But smoking is legal.  I don't think it is fair to smokers, like  my boyfriend, at all.  to have to go a million floors away to smoke a cigarette when its legal.  I am not saying it should be ok to smoke everywhere, that's not fair, but neither is a non smoker pushing an agenda. - but I am saying there should be more options.  We shouldn't have to budget 40 minutes into the day every time he wants a cigarette.

On the getaway it was not bad, because they had an outdoor area on the main floor of the ship (maybe 8) so it was not a project to go smoke

Its also not fair for a family where a parent smokes.  These same people who don't want kids running around the ship and think kids should be supervised... He can't supervise his kid because he is restricted to an adult only far corner to smoke. What sense does that make??

Also - they kept trying to kick people out of Spice H20 on the bliss for formal private events.   That was funny to watch because the smokers would not leave or stay out as requested and its a bunch of people smoking and a mess from the sun who refuse to leave and people dressed in gowns and stuff who paid for an expensive party

There are more non-smokers than smokers and when they take up the space, where there are loungers/chairs for smoking or it smells like an ashtray, non-smokers don't want to sit there and the otherside is full.

The box was not too small, as there were always seats available, but they, like non-smokers, don't want to be in with all that smoke.

Sounds like if they got rid of the box and just made that area a smoking area it would work fine.  They should do that.

I don't think a non-smoker is entitled to a lounge chair more so than a smoker.  And I was on the sold out bliss and while the open chairs were not always next to the pool, there were always open chairs.  You just feel its prime real estate and that you should be more entitled to it

How would that make it better, then more areas will smell like an ashtray.  What they need to do is put a door on the box and require that they stay in there to smoke.

What you don't get is that there are probably eighty-five percent non-smokers and fifteen percent smokers, so smokers should not take up an entire side or a quarter of the entire side because of smoke smell.  I was on the Breakaway and during sea days, you couldn't find a lounger anywhere on the pool deck or the deck above, except for the space to the right of the smoking box, where there were probably thirty lounger, that no one would use because of the smell from those standing outside the smoking area.

That means 15% of the pool area should be for smokers. What you don't realize is many smokers want a lounge chair but can't have one because its been taken from them.  they can't hang at the pool.  They can't supervise their kids.  When kids are splashing around in hot tubs etc and unsupervised this is why.

Many smokers also do not smoke indoors, they want to smoke outside, not in a closed room of smoke.

The bliss put a door on the smoking in the casino and it was way more smoky in the casino then when it was just open.

Until smoking is illegal, its not right to discriminate against smokers.  What about smelly people.  Some cultures or religions don't do deodorant.  Or people wear strong perfume or cologne.  IMO get over it and get to the pool earlier.  If 15% of the ship is smokers, they deserve 15% of open air space

You don't "have to". You and he "choose to".

Again, he chooses how much time he spends in the smoking area.

Neither is more or less entitled than the other. Either person can get any available lounge chair. They just can't smoke while sitting on it.

ANYONE can sit in any chair. Nobody is banned from a particular location near the pool.

1 hour ago, JulieJulie311 said:

a smoker would love that lounge chair you don't want.  why not let them have it?  instead of discriminate against them because you don't like their perfectly legal recreational activity

People aren't discriminated against. The act of smoking is restricted to certain areas.

No, it is because the smoker chooses to smoke over supervising their children.

The "want to" is the issue. It isn't "need to". It is a choice.

Smokers are not being discriminated against. The legality of smoking has nothing to do with what NCL allows on their ships. There are plenty of things that are legal but are still not allowed on NCL.

Smelly people, lack of deodorant, and strong perfume combined don't kill thousands of people per year from 2nd-hand odor.

No, they deserve whatever area(s) NCL determines is for smoking. If 85% of the guests likes to swim, that doesn't mean that the pool has to be large enough to hold thousands of people at once.

You're damn right we're entitled. We're entitled to being able to enjoy our vacation without having to be exposed to second hand smoke which is HARMFUL to ones health. Since 1964 2.5 million people have died from health problems due to second hand smoke. So yes, i'm sorry if your boyfriend wants to put that crap inside him...doesn't mean the rest of us have to smell it. Second hand smoke KILLS people every day. Do you get that? It's not just about convenience.

Drinking is legal, but someone drinking next to you doesn't cause any harm to others. Smoking next to someone DOES cause harm. Do you seriously not understand that? Why do you think smoking is basically banned from all public establishments these days?

She says non-smokers are entitled but the only entitled one here is her (and her boyfriend). You can do whatever you want, as long as what you do doesn't cause harm to others. It's really a simple concept. Nobody is stopping her boyfriend from doing any of those things...he's choosing to smoke instead of doing those things.

A smoker enjoys smoking so becoming a non smoker for a cruise is neither fun or relaxing.  Last January on the Escape while the ship was fueling it was totally non smoking. Image if they didn't serve drinks while refueling people would riot.  They are certainly putting the squeeze on smokers.

As far as Disney we just gave our Vacation club points to the group home  here.

Are you seriously complaining because you can’t smoke while the ship is FUELING and comparing that to drinking during the same time ???   Last I checked spilling a drink overboard while thousands of gallons of fuel Is being transferred couldn’t start a massive fire...

Not a smoker myself, but I can almost see this backfiring on NCL from a financial standpoint. I still remember hearing about how poorly the Carnival Paradise did as a smoke-free ship since non-smokers typically didn't drink and gamble as much as those who do.

Obviously, the smoking areas on ships are getting less and less. It's only a matter of time before there is no smoking on cruises as is on land in public areas.

I remember when the law passed that bars & restaurants could no longer allow smoking and everyone thought they would go out of business. Somehow, the smokers made it work, they still go out to eat and go to bars.

I know there are many smokers that now go to only all inclusive but I've always been curious if smokers would give up cruising altogether because the lines no longer allowed it?

I don't believe it will ever be entirely banned until there are no smokers. There is much income to be made by passengers that smoke. If I could not smoke anywhere on a ship, yes I would not go on one.

I am sure that this post will draw many non-smokers. It is meant only as info for smokers, not as a invitation for anti-smoking responses. The only areas to smoke on the Sky are now the Deck 12 uncovered Champs Bar, and the Casino when it is open for business. They no longer allow smoking on Port side on Deck 6.

I do find it interesting that Disney Cruise Line offers more smoking areas than the NCL Sky.

Just curious as to what part of this post did NON SMOKERS not understand, why are NON SMOKERS being obtuse.

While I agree, it is an internet forum. The OP nor anyone but the mods have any control over where the thread goes other than to decide to post or not.  Pretty much happens on every thread which can generate any controversial discussion.

Couldn't agree more. The only time it bothers me is when you have to walk through the casino through heavy smoke to get somewhere else on the ship. I love to gamble as well but I won't on cruise ships because of this. Make smoking outside only and I think you will make most people happy.
