cruisin granny Posted January 21, 2006 #1 Share Posted January 21, 2006 Please help. I am sailing on the Sovereign in 3 weeks. YEA! I have been reading about the Stingray adventure in Nassau and was almost ready to book it. I then discovered, on past boards, that the island is infected with sand fleas. Anyone had this problem recently? Does insect repellant protect against sand fleas? Thanks Ginny

cruisinfever Posted January 21, 2006 #3 Share Posted January 21, 2006 We went on this excursion a couple of years ago. We never noticed any sand fleas. We were a bit dissappointed with the whole excursion because the sting rays fenced in and you snorkel within the fencing. It did not feel very natural. cruisin granny Posted January 21, 2006 Author #4 Share Posted January 21, 2006 I heard the stingrays were fenced in but from what I read the island was beautiful. I discovered the post about the sand fleas from a cruise critic in Dec. It is due to all the hurricane activity last year & also happpened a few years ago. guess I will just have to shop. hstrybuf Posted January 21, 2006 #5 Share Posted January 21, 2006 Maybe they got rid of them, but they were there the last time we were on that particular island.
cruisin granny Posted January 22, 2006 Author #6 Share Posted January 22, 2006 Thanks for your ideas. I have decided not to chance it & hopefully get back to the Caymans to see the stingrays. I want to go on the thriller boat but my husband does not so we shall see. Anyone tried it in Nassau?
freezone Posted January 22, 2006 #7 Share Posted January 22, 2006 Geez just posted a thread about sand fleas didn't see yours already going. I'm probably going to get flamed but we're talking about different beaches.
ggcecil Posted January 24, 2006 #8 Share Posted January 24, 2006 Sand fleas are fish bait. They live in the sand, about the size of a peanut M&M. We catch them for bait here in Florida to fish for Pompano. They are harmless. Bait shops even sell sand flea bait screens to catch your owm bait. They burrow under the sand near the surf. They are perfectly harmless. No need to worry. Gretchen
