TexasBlue7 Posted March 22, 2019 #3 Share Posted March 22, 2019 Was on the Edge in January and used one paper straw once. Never used another one. They suck, pun intended. Take your own if u need a straw.
helen haywood Posted March 22, 2019 #4 Share Posted March 22, 2019 Ditto. Thank you tree huggers. What about all the plastic water bottles onboard?
mcolem2v Posted March 22, 2019 #5 Share Posted March 22, 2019 I think it maybe due the fact plastic water bottles can be recycled while plastic straws cannot be recycled.

When my granddaughter came home from college she informed me that I am killing whales and other sea creatures. She got me some bamboo straws and showed me how to clean them. Thank goodness she went back to school. 5 1

Water was in a tin type bottle. The thing is the Edge has a very aggressive recycle program too, but the tree Huggers have put them in over drive. UniPac Posted March 22, 2019 #9 Share Posted March 22, 2019 Additional problem with plastic straws is that alot of them go overboard because of the wind. An empty bottle won‘t that easy.

They have done away with most of the plastic water bottles on Edge and shifting to wax coated paper boxes.
Rare hcat Posted March 22, 2019 #11 Share Posted March 22, 2019 We bring our own plastic straws( stock piled at home)......and our own Spring water..The stuff in the metal whivh is on the Classic package.. is not at all to our taste, and has more salt than our pure Spring water brand... Algebralovr Posted March 22, 2019 #13 Share Posted March 22, 2019 On Silhouette in February, the Sunset Bar had mostly paper straws, but occasionally gave a plastic one to us (in our Alcove). They were fine and lasted the length of the drink.

Provence55always Posted March 22, 2019 #16 Share Posted March 22, 2019 Must say I did not like the plastic or paper straws......I prefer drinking my drinks straight from the glass😊
realnice46 Posted March 22, 2019 #17 Share Posted March 22, 2019 I wish they were this aggressive with all the cigarette butts everywhere you go. They aren't recyclable. I don't mind paper straws, I'm old enough to remember when that was all they had. Thanks for heads up I will bring some straws as well.

Unlike plastic water bottles that can be recycled, straws, because of their size, are difficult to be recycled, because they get stuck in the recycling machines. davekathy Posted March 22, 2019 #20 Share Posted March 22, 2019 Throughout our school years paper straws were it. I guess it could be worse where the cruise lines go back to actual straw straws.

CardRock Posted March 22, 2019 #23 Share Posted March 22, 2019 There are "plastic" straws made of avocado seeds, but until they become more economically attractive, they would not be a viable alternative...However, they do biodegrade pretty quickly...just not while your using them like the paper ones do. CruisinRoxy Posted March 22, 2019 #24 Share Posted March 22, 2019 Do what we did as kids. Use Twizzlers as a straw. And then eat it when you’re done! Problem solved. No waste!
frteach Posted March 22, 2019 #25 Share Posted March 22, 2019 I have heard straws described as sippy cups for adults. I am trying not to use them at all, and I carry stainless steel ones in my purse for really foamy drinks. These are available in grocery stores, and I will definitely have a couple on my next cruise. We have to start somewhere on the environment, and I applaud Celebrity for their policy. Plastic and the ocean don't go well together. Never hugged a tree.
