Viking Sky evacuated off coast of Norway with engine problems

Recommended Posts

Just reading about it . Everyone off by helicopter will be a slow and arduous job. Viking Sky is a relatively new ship I think.  Trust all goes well .

That ship was only launched in 2017. It's a bit surprising that she would have engine problems so soon. And apparently that coast is one of the most dangerous around Norway. I hope they manage to get all the passengers and crew off safely.

The ship actually had a blackout which stopped everything.

Captain put out a mayday as they were in a storm on a lee shore.

Dropped the anchores & they held.

Rescue of injured by helicopter.

She is now underway making 2-3 knots with escort of 2 tugs & 2 rig tenders.

2  large offshore tug / supply / rescue vessels in attendance.

Ocean Reponse 4183 gt

Normand Range 7480 gt rushing to scene at 17 knots

With these 2 large tugs used to tow oil rigs they will no doubt try to get Sky Viking into port in daylight.

Assisted by harbour tug Vivax 485 gt.

No Mic - bulbous bow.

David - Australia has 1 emergency tug in the GBR area.

Coral Knight chartered by AMSA at 1945 gt - not much in size compared to the 2 standing by Viking Sky at 4183 gt & 7480 gt.  Would be little help with a large loaded collier or tanker.

Other than Coral Knight they rely on harbour tugs & others passing through area - or call one in from Singapore.

Good news to see that the ship is now safely in port in Norway.  Details are on the Viking thread.

News of the evacuation of passengers and storm damage is being shown on ABC Breakfast News this morning.

Having experienced furniture sliding from one side of a ship to the other and back as the ship rolled, as well as having to hold on to a rope to cross the lift wells, on my first overseas cruise (from NY to Rotterdam across the Atlantic) I know how terrifying this experience is.  However, my experience was minor compared to what the passengers on the Viking Sky experienced.

I am so glad everybody is now safe...... but how on a new ship does all four engines stop at once ????

Fuel... cooling... or major electrical problem ???

Also the video of in the forward lounge... with the people sitting in the chairs with that large planter sliding round....What if it slid into one of the them....???

Cheers Don
