Medical Marijuana - Not bringing it

I'm curious if being a medical marijuana patient has caused any one any extra scrutiny or attention going to or on a cruise.    As stated in the title, I am leaving it at home, but its possible a smell might linger.

Although I have no experience in this particular area, I can't imagine that you would have any problems since you will have none with you. I live in a state where cannabis is legal for both recreational and medicinal use - the only time I have detected any smell is when I am in an area where someone is smoking.

I remember flying from Schiphol  about 10 years ago when cannabis was illegal in the US (but not in AMS). Young adults were smoking immediately outside the terminal. When they went through airport security they had no issues  ... I would imagine that a smell still lingered so soon after smoking.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you're asking in the context of the thread running on the RCI board.  Truthfully, I don't think you'll have an issue.  First, medical marijuana is a state issue, therefore, CBP won't see any sort of record that you're a legal user. Second, it helps to understand how drug dogs work. They basically smell like we see.  The chances of them hitting on a somewhat lingering odor from smoke on your clothing or luggage is extremely minimal.  That said, just to err on the side of caution, I recommend giving everything a good wash before leaving the house.

Which thread is that Paul? I will probably wash that jacket and of course all clothes.  I will be darn sure not to bring any in the light of people who claim to forget was in their possession the way to the TSA!

I'm also a medical marijuana patient and would also never dream of traveling with it on a plane or ship.  I've never had a problem with extra scrutiny, but then again I vape it rather than smoke it so there is no smell.  I highly recommend vaping over smoking.  Better for your lungs, very economical since you don't 'burn up' any of the good stuff, and smell free.  I live in a small 2 bedroom apartment, and you could come in 1 minute after I finish medicating and there isn't even a hint of a lingering odor, let alone any smell that could doing to my clothes or person.

Cruise lines are very much anti THC, so it is smart not to bring any on board.  Pax would be wise to leave the CBD oils at home as well.  I hope you don't think that security personnel can determine what is THC and what is CBD.  They'll just lump it all together in the banned substance box.

Weigh the risk/reward of being denied boarding or being asked to leave the ship mid cruise, possibly in a foreign port, being fined or jailed,  against the value of having your stash handy.  The cruise is just a week, and if you're a regular, you can probably live on the afterglow.

It is not a matter of the cruise lines being "anti THC."  Marijuana is still illegal under the US federal law.  The cruise lines really have no discretion on this issue if the ship is cruising in or out of a US port.  As long as Marijuana remains a "Schedule 1" drug (per Federal regulations) it is unlikely to be tolerated on any ship cruising from/to the USA.   We have actually seen the CBP folks using a drug sniffing dog in two ports.  We would speculate that the recent major drug busts on two cruises in Florida will increase the use of drug dogs in the ports.  The last time I looked, the Federal rules provide for up to 1 year in prison and a $1,000 fine for the possession of ANY marijuana (21 US Code Sec 811).  To make things even more interesting this could happen in a State that has legal marijuana.  Gotta love our laws.

I technically vape, but liquid/wax products aren't available yet, so we have to vape dry herb, which in the grinding process is a little smelly and if you turn up the device too high (pun intended) it does tend to smoke.  Being a person who tried the stuff till last month at 59.5 and never smoked tobacco or anything this is on my mind. Thanks for your input.

I know people that have taken edibles and not had any issues. I don’t know if that would work for you.

That's a good question that I was wondering about.  Edibles are not yet available in Ohio yet.  I'll just go back to ibuprofen and Captain Morgan, but while my pain is horrible during midwest winters, I usually feel better as soon a i arrive in the Caribbean and am on a cruise. 🙂

I vape herb and I don't grind.  I use an Arizer Air 2 after years of the Arizer Solo and Air 1.  I know some Vapes smell (usually at the point a little combustion occurs - which is what is going on if you get actual smoke ) but I have never smelled anything other than the smell of the Herb when I open the bag.  The vaporizers I've used never caused combustion, but I know there are vaporizers that do.   If you don't mind me asking, what vaporizer do you use?

As I told my kids when they asked me if I had ever used pot (long before I became a medical marijuana patient), I went to college in the 70s, nuff said.  I stopped using it a couple of years out of college, and then resumed about 35 years later, as a med user, about 5 years ago, so I have a fair amount of experience.  I've used several different vaporizers - some pretty expensive, but for me the Air 2 is easy to use, has almost no learning curve, is durable, and is economical.  And doesn't smell.  And no, I don't own stock in them, LOL.

Behind the scenes, ALL luggage is x-rayed and hit and miss for presence of drug/ex[losive sniffing dogs. In the event your bags are suspect, you will be contacted by security for search of your possessions. If your holding, you will experience the fastest cruise possible as you are escorted off the ship. You have to realize all most all cruise ships sail under foreign flags and your going to countries where jail time results from small amounts.

Personally I wouldn't risk trying to take them on a ship or plane.  Life is too good to screw up by getting entangled with the law enforcement system.  I'll deal with the pain, and eat and sleep poorly, but I won't let it ruin my trip.

While some states allow medical marijuana it is illegal, as a matter of federal law in all 50 states. If you are caught with it on a ship it is big trouble.

Slightly off topic, but thanks for your expertise, glad you got that off your chest.

There are Youtube videos on how to make your own edibles.

I've never worried about this since a dog might pick up a lingering odor, but there won't be anything the dog will actually hit on.  If questioned, I'd probably tell the agent that I was a medical marijuana user, but didn't bring any with me in light of the federal laws. If you're embarking in California, where recreational and medical use is legal, I would hope that any agents looking for marijuana would understand that marijuana users might have lingering odors and still not have any products on their person.

Good post, thanks.  On a side not a funny story,  I became legal in Jan, made my first Dispensary vist in Feb, that very next weekend we went to a LIVE PD WATCHPARTY that was put on by the Franklin County, Ohio Sheriff's office.  During the event, I walked by a K9 and his officer, the dog was laying down. As I walked by, he got up to follow me, the office did to, but didn't follow me into the rest room.

It is also illegal in many countries, who also have the authority to come on board to inspect cabins. DW uses CBD oil and through an over abundance of caution we won't be bringing it with us.

Your posts do seem to indicate some experience. I've only been at it about 2 months now after never trying it for the first time.  I am starting with a Randy's chill  unit. (randys.com I think)  They can do either liquid or dry.  It has 3 heats, the highest will definitely combust, so I keep in on the middle setting and maybe hit the high setting (pun intended) at the end to get the most out of it.   I've been through too many dry coils that I think I should have $15 each) so I hesitate to recommend it.  It does work and has some advantages. I also bought the device shown below. It works pretty good, but some drawbacks.

There is an excellent website with a very rude name that is like cruise critics for vaporizors.  I couldn't find much info or any reviews for the 2 you mention on that site, which is not a good sign.  The website is f**kcombustion.com with the asterisks replaced by the letters you'd expect.  You might want to check out the reviews and discussions on there.  And again, I personally unreservedly recommend the Air II by Arizer.  Never had any combustion, never had any smell, very economical in amount used.  It's on the lower price side for quality vapes and it uses widely available 18650 rechargeable batteries.  There are even bubbler stems available that let you cool and humidify your vapor.
