Table Tent With Your Names in the MDR?

On our next cruise I am seriously thinking of getting a couple table tents printed with our names and where we are from.

 

Seems like when you share a table other people always ask "whats your names"? or "where are you from"?

 

So have you done this before? and might be a good segway for dinner conversation.

IMHO it's better to introduce yourselves by just saying who you are.

 

Naturally folk are liable to forget almost immediately, and I'm guilty of that  -  especially on a larger table. 

But  it's easy to overcome folk forgetting our names,  "don't you agree, Julie?" 

"Yes, John, I do"

" Julie and I are looking forward to tomorrow in Anyport - we've never been there before"

Eventually it sinks in.

 

And there's stax of other things that come into small-talk.

Like "what work do you do?"

"I'm an accountant - same as I was yesterday when you asked"

 

So mebbe a table tent needs more of a biography 

 

Sorry, need2, but a table tent's not for me.

The alternative is to remain nameless strangers instead, which might be far more awkward....

Why stop there? Bring some self stick name tags and wear them at the table.

Or, have your names embroidered on your shirts. 

 

 

Seriously, if someone brought table tents with their names on them, my first impression would be that they were a bit egotistical. Just introduce yourselves on the first day and go from there. We have never had any problems at our tables without relying on the use of name badges.

I bring a pile of bound biographies and pass them out when I meet people. They seem to appreciate them very much because they always have a great big grin on their faces when I hand them one. Obviously, they are giddy with excitement at receiving it!

My initial reaction would probably be it was for the wait staff.  

 

I have not done this.   I have to admit there were times having this would have been helpful.  But really, I think it would be kind of awkward, and even more so if someone expected me to fill one a place card.

When you are seated with 'strangers", it's polite to say, "Hi, I'm John Doe and this is my wife, Jane", or something to that effect.  It's what polite people do.  The others should respond in kind.

The idea seems a bit weird. If we arrived at our spot in the MDR to find another couple with table tents in front of them I might ask to be moved.

I've had students in large clsses use these so I can try to remember their names. So I don't have a fundamental objection to them, but how are you going to carry those around? Mrs. Dawg might have a small evening purse which would be too small. The ones I’ve seen will not fit into a jacket pocket. I guess you could attach a string to them and wear them around your necks going to and from the MDR. That might make them useful in the casino too. Hey, and if you get them laminated you could wear them by the pool.  I'd hate to see the ink run because they got wet.

Seems a little over the top to me as well.  We almost always sit at a table of at least 6 people and after a day or two most everyone seems to know each other's names.  If the names don't stick, so what?  If there is someone or a couple that you really "click" with, you will probably be seeing them other than at dinner, and remembering their names will not be an issue.  Just be friendly and make conversation at the table- remembering everyone's name is really not that vitally important.   JMO!

I'd just print off some copies of my CV and pass them out.  Then, the chatterboxes don't have to worry about asking me questions - they can talk all they want about themselves...

I do that too.

 

I also give mid-cruise and final exams to make sure that people retain the information.  It slows down dinner service, a bit.  So, I order an extra appetizer for myself while they are working on their exams.  My wife, of course, has most of the exams memorized.  So, she blasts through them pretty quickly and, usually, has time for an extra dinner roll.

Granted, I have almost zero desire to meet new people on cruises and would do anything I could to get away from a table of more than just my wife and I, but if I sat at a table and someone whipped out a name placard, I would probably start counting the seconds until I could get away. Just introduce yourself, it takes a minuscule amount of time.

When I was a teenager I purchased a cool oriental jacket from a thrift store. Only catch, it has someone else's name on it. That led to a lot of interesting conversations. Especially when people would start a conversation using the name on the jacket.

Wow...Someone with the same "zero desire" we have....probably not many of us that feel this way. We're low key keep to ourselves cruiser's that after 43 yrs together and 25+ cruises still enjoy just being with each other when we cruise without the extended family.

One of the advancements of modern day cruising is the expansion of anytime dining and alternate dining options.  No more table roulette and the risk of being stuck with Chatty Cathy and her husband.

For us it would be Chatty Cathy, her husband Macho Mark, and their kids, Squirmy Spencer and Crying Chrisie. AKA: table mates from hell.

We do Anytime Dining and usually share a table.  But, I don't think written info would help.  And to be perfectly honest, I think it's because I don't really care enough to remember names or occupations, written or not.  For us it's not so much a relationship as it is an experience, a chance for a fun evening with, hopefully, fun people.  We laugh, tell funny stories about whatever and eat.  A kind of only-happens-on-a-cruise-ship, platonic short-term relationship.   And there is an extremely rare chance I will ever see them again. 

 

If we do see them out and about, we smile, talk a bit about our excursions or some other cruise-ship-only light topic and go on our way.  I'm fairly certain the couple of times this has happened they didn't remember our names either or that name tags would have helped.
