Rome Airport (FCO) to Civitavecchia

We will need to get to Civitavecchia from FCO in the late afternoon (staying in Civitavecchia overnight pre-cruise).  I am reluctant to book a car service or taxi in advance as after we land we will need to pick up a suitcase from storage at FCO and I don’t know how long that will take.  Can anyone offer suggestions on how best to get there?

Thx!

There are not any terrific options, unfortunately.

You could pick up your bag and then take a taxi to Civitavecchia but the cost will be more than arranging something beforehand.

You can take the train, which is cheap but involves a transfer somewhere in Rome as well as managing your own luggage off and on two trains -- plus once in Civitavecchia you may have to go down a full flight of stairs and up the other side to exit the station (no elevator).

Or you could rent a car.

My choice would be to arrange a private transfer, just give yourself a wide window to pick up the bag. If you have to sit and wait for a while in the airport -- well, there are worse things. The arrivals lobby does have a few places where you can grab quick food or drinks, bottled water, etc.

The “not including gratuity” is a big scam people!

in Europe, gratuities are ALWAYS included. It is the LAW.

you can give the driver a couple of Euro, but please do NOT tip like in the USA. Be respectful to the local customs and do not overtip.

I've done something like this several times. Just tell your driver your want to be picked up at xx:xx time instead of the normal 60-90 minutes after landing. Even tell them why if you want. They should be accommodating to your service request. Sure you may have to wait around a bit longer than you normally would if your flight is early, but hey, you've got to accomplish a task first before your ready to be transported.

Check out gettransfer.com. You put in your request, times destination etc  and then how much you would like to pay for the trip. They give suggestion of 83$  Canadian  for fco to civitavecchia. Drivers will respond to you, you pick one and you set it up with them. Can ask for English speaking. Also luxury cars for more. Includes tip and 60 minute wait at airport if you are delayed.

This is priced by the car...up to 3 people and luggage.  Reviews read well. We are going to do this....website looks good.

This may be too late for the OP, who posted this question over a month ago, but just in case they are still looking for options there is a bus.

There's only one per day at 15:30 (3:30 PM) so it doesn't work for most cruisers but if it does, it's a great deal.

It departs from the T1/T2 bus area  Monday-Saturday and it takes an hour and a quarter to reach Civitavecchia for the bargain price of 4,30 euro.
