Catania, Sicily - what to do?

We are in port from 7:00am to 4:00pm 

Thoughts on things to do while we are on port? Recommendations for private tour companies?

Is Mount Etna worth visiting? Taormina? 

Our group loves culture, food and scenery as well as adventure!

we visited Taormina and loved it. beautiful views and lots of nice shops, cafes, etc. one of my favorite little towns we visited.

Taormina is definitely worth visiting although it´s very touristy and lots of people. Mount Aetna... you usually only go up to the parking lot where the cable car starts but not any higher. There are the two Silvestri craters from 2001 where you can walk up. The actual crater is way up higher (cable car, jeep ride and then walking with a guide - a full day experience). I´ve been there last year. You can check out my photos here. We didn´t start in Catania but a little North of it in a little village (we´ve been on a sailing cruise).

Instead of heading north to Taormina, consider going south to visit Syracusa. It has beautiful ancient ruins and a very pretty town (Ortygia) -- you can visit both in a day. It's about an hour by car.

Try looking at Viator for trip ideas.  We found a food tour of Catania that looks interesting and you get to try local foods.  The reviews are very good.
