Civi to Rome train or taxi/bus?

Just wondering if there is a big difference in time/cost/difficulty in taking the train versus whatever other option to go to Rome is?  We would just like to explore on our own for the day.

I should add that we will be 6 people if that makes a difference..

Train is clearly the least expensive but getting a van for 6 might be more convenient and allow you to be picked up and dropped off easier.  Train will involve a little movement, dock to port exit via internal shuttle, then getting to train station either by bus or walking.  At the Rome end you will get off at whatever station gets you closest to whichever attractions you are interested in and may involve more walking or a subway ride.  A shared van would let you do a point to point transit.  We did the train but there were only two of us and we were focusing on the Ancient ruins.

There is a bus option we almost never discuss here.  The SITA depot in Civitavecchia is one half mile from the cruise port shuttle bus drop off, you can get a bus from there to the Rome Cornelia metro station.

The bus ride takes 1:35 and there are buses departing at 7:15 and 7:50 (the next one isn't until 9:30).

The fare for the bus ride alone is 3,90 but the 5-zone BIRG ticket would cover this and all mass transit in Rome for the day.
