Hong Kong Hotels - Which Area?

We did 2 cruises on Millie out of Hong Kong in 2017 and 2018. Our hotel was on the Kowloon side of HK. Our ship was docked at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal. Kowloon has 2 cruise terminals. Ocean Terminal in Kowloon it is near the Star Ferry terminal. Kai Tak Cruise Terminal is in Kowloon Bay. It was the old airport at one time.

We have been to Hong Kong several times and stay on the island.  It is generally close to the things we want to to see, and it is quite enjoyable just walking around.

Celebrity uses the Kai Tak terminal.

We have stayed several times in HK, and always in Kowloon -- Holiday Inn Golden Mile.

The airport A21 bus stops right in front of the hotel, very convenient and cheap.

The location is awesome for a budget traveler.

Yes, so do we in the Exec rooms.

OP, there is a wonderful local on the Ports of Board board that will help with all things HK, including the transport options. Take a look over on that board as he posts videos to help you through it all.

Dozen or so times to Hong Kong but not for a couple of years -   the debate between staying on Hong Kong Island and Kowloon never goes away, regular travellers have their favourites.

My view.... More touristy things to do on Hong Kong Island and would recommend 3 areas Central, Admiralty or Causeway Bay.  The big advantage of staying in Kowloon is harbour front views during the day and spectacular light show views in the evening which are best viewed from Kowloon.  If staying in Kowloon I'd pick a waterfront hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui (such as Regent/Intercontinental or Kowloon Shangri La - both of which have excellent Harbour View Rooms).  The two areas I personally would avoid in Kowloon are the area around Ritz Carlton in West Kowloon or out towards Kai Tak in the Hung Hom area - these in the past have always felt a bit out with slightly more awkward transport options (only slightly though).

Public transport in Hong Kong is very very cheap  and plentiful with a wide variety of options - Metro / Tram / Bus / Ferry / Taxi / funicular - so I wouldn't worry too much you can get around very easily between the Island and Kowloon.  Part of the fun in Hong Kong is using public transport like the metro, star ferry, peak tram and vintage trams.
