Smoking on Board

Hi All

My wife & i are looking at switching lines from Princess to NCL (a story for another time). I have been reading that smoking IS permitted and appears to be unenforced with people smoking in the state rooms and in the public areas... 

is this fact or just an overblown opinion of someone?? Both of us are not very tolerant of people smoking nearby, and I dont want to have to deal with this on a cruise.

We are looking at the New England trip in Oct 2019 and we are getting ready to book it

just wanted to hear from you on the smoking policy

The number of people who smoke where smoking is not allowed will vary and is unpredictable.

 

NCL is slowly reducing the number of smoking areas so there are plenty of non-smoking areas for you to enjoy.

 

If you find someone who is smoking in a non-smoking area, it's better to inform the staff instead of confronting the smoker yourself.

On most NCL ships there are 2-4 smoking areas.  

1) There is usually one on the main pool area normally starboard

2) One on one of the top decks in the rear

3) Casino

4) Humidor for cigars

 

There will always be people who will smoke where ever they like, no matter where you are, on a ship or on land.

 

With that being said, I would avoid the area around the humidor.  I am cigar smoker, but that area will be overrun with cigarette smokers since that is the nearest smoking location near a number of bars. The humidor area is enclosed, but with cigarette smokers running in and out constantly the smoke does escape the area.  I really wish NCL would reserve that area for only cigar smokers.

If you find pax smoking in cabin or on their balconies call the front desk and they will send security. We have done this a few times. It's also an isolated situation..

Probably the last couple of years I’ve noticed a lot less smoking on balconies.  And, even though I never reported anyone doing so, I’ve run into other passengers who have, and being vocal about it.  Not sure if that matters, but just my observation.

 

Like most lines, the smoking areas are being more and more restricted.  I know on the NCL Bliss in the casino, the smoking area is being restricted to a walled in area, instead of throughout the casino.

 

As far as areas that allow smoking on NCL, check in the “Dailies” for the areas available to smokers on the ship you’re interested in.

On Bliss 2-3 weeks ago … looks like NCL is cracking down the cigarette smoking in cigar lounges.

I was on the BA end of March and there was no sign, or even any attempt to restrict.  It was the cigarette smokers who ended up holding the doors open so that their cloud would move else wheres.

The only indoor smoking area on the ships, except for humidor,  is in the casino.  Since we gamble, we have been used to sharing those areas with smokers and I do not complain about that🙂 But for those who have allergies, etc, they might have problems in or near those casinos.   

On the older ships you can usually just avoid walking by that area to avoid indoor smoke.  The newer ships have the casinos on deck 7 mid ship with the open atrium area running through it.     Bliss has an enclosed smoking casino section which is a huge improvement over the earlier Breakaway class ships.  It's been reported that the Joy (so probably Encore too) has an enclosed casino section for smokers like the Bliss.     

 

I do think NCL is doing a good job of enforcing the smoking policies and we haven't seen anyone smoking on balconies for years.   The more open casinos will have some smoke drifting to nearby areas.  On the 'Away' class ships it's harder to avoid due to the atrium through decks 6/7/8.  The Escape has (in my opinion) better air exchangers in the casino.  Just off the Breakaway and it was definitely smokier in the casino area than Escape.   

 

Bliss with the enclosed casino section for smokers has made an improvement for the 6/7/8 decks.   We do love the layout of these ships with the atrium through 6/7/8 and the Waterfront area on deck 8.    Loved our Bliss cruise earlier this year.  We have already booked two cruises on Encore and one on Joy.
