Lisbon Airport Connecting Flight

Lisbon and Barcelona are both in the Schengen zone.  This means immigration (passport check) in Lisbon, but customs won't be until Barcelona.  Hence, you won't see your luggage until Barcelona.  That said, customs is Europe is typically a non-event.  Walk through the green door if you have nothing to declare; the red door if you do have anything to declare (unlikely.). You probably won't interact with anyone.

Coming back into the states customs has typically been more of a face-to-face interaction, though my last couple of times returning at ATL it has been a non-event similar to customs in Europe.  (Still have to interact, either with person or GE kiosk, for immigration)

You will also have to go security, which seems daft since it's airside and you've just come off a flight but that's the way it works. That means the usual liquid rules apply so if you have, say, a half-drunk bottle of water that you want to keep for your onward flight you have to let the security people know so they can put it through the machine separately.

Lisbon is a very easy airport to connect in because it's small but that said it has some decent shopping and dining options to keep you busy while you're waiting for your connecting flight.
