ATM near the port?

We just got scheduled to dock in  Costa Maya for 1 day in October due to our ports in Cuba being canceled.

Can anyone tell me if there's an ATM near the port?

This will be our one and only stop in Mexico.

I would not trust an ATM in any Mexican port.  Too many stories on extra of different charges showing up later.  Best to work with ship customer service and get $ there. An ATM on board the ship might charge a fee but keeping the receipt will help if anything goes wrong.

 

Cash is king in Mahahual.  Few places out side of hotels for bookings take CCs.

 

But to answer your question, there is an ATM in the port complex. I believe it is on the Cirrus and Plus systems fro bank debt cards and will take credit cards if you have the option. Be sure to notify your bank or CC company that you are traveling and may make ATM withdrawals.

 

I haven't seen it but there is supposedly an ATM along the malecon or the next street over.  I'd be leery here as in other small places they can run out of money.  There used to be a guy on a bike that would change $ for pesos, but didn't take CCs. Worked mostly with local businesses to convert $ when cruise ships were in.  Owned those colorful houses you see heading toward the malecon.  Nearest banks are in Chetumal and Cancun.

I suppose another option is to use USD for our one day, only stop in Mexico port. However, I usually try to have some currency for the country we are in.

And your ship will change your US$ for you too.  IMO that's your best option all around, unless you go to a local bank before you leave.
