New change regarding Sea Pass cards

I was in the 101st so fully aware of bar colors. Precious metals, Gold is worth so much more than Silver. How did the military get it so wrong?  Lol

Actually, when they did it, the value was reversed.  Silver was more expensive than Gold.

At least what I had heard.

Or -

  • Gold is worth more than silver, but silver outranks gold. It is because the Army decreed in 1832 that infantry colonels would wear gold eagles on an epaulet of silver and all other colonels would wear silver eagles on gold. When majors and lieutenant colonels received the leaves, this tradition could not continue. So silver leaves represented lieutenant colonels and gold, majors. The case of lieutenants is different: First lieutenants had been wearing silver bars for 80 years before second lieutenants had any bars at all.

The Army origin explains why the color silver outranks gold in Air Force officer insignia. In the early 19th century, Army infantry colonels wore gold eagles, while all other Army colonels wore silver eagles. When the Army later decided to adopt a single color of eagles for all colonels, that single color was silver, apparently because more silver eagles than gold eagles were already in use. Lieutenant colonels received silver oak leaves next, to match the silver eagles of full colonels. Majors were then given gold oak leaves to distinguish them from lieutenant colonels. Once the precedent of silver outranking gold was set, it was followed when gold bars were later created for second lieutenants, who had no grade-specific insignia until the early 20th century.

Also, an interesting read - https://media.defense.gov/2011/Jan/11/2001330017/-1/-1/0/Why is the Colonel called Kernal.pdf

@Milwaukee Eight last I looked, gold was more valuable than silver. 😉

Not in the Military.  A silver bar outranks a golf bar and a silver leaf outranks a gold leaf.  Also, not on Celebrity where a silver card means Suite Class, which has much more perks than a gold card, which means Concierge Class.

Even though the Star Class cards look black, they are actually very dark purple.

Now looking at the 2 Star Class sea pass cards from our April and June Oasis sailings last year. Both are Black with Royal Suite Class printed in Purple. Our Genies had to remake both as they were originally the regular off white Pinnacle sea pass cards.

Possibly changed the color since last year.

They must have changed them since Feb. I have one in my hand right now and it’s definitely purple with white writing.
