I used to buy lots of gift cards but now consider them mostly a nuisance.  Unless it is purchased for an 80% discount at the warehouse store or directly from the vendor.

The two grocery chains offering fuel perk,  fuel reward programs both devalued the program.

We have analytic people in the family who advise that the best travel deals are in high end credit cards.  Benefits include travel insurance and reward points that are actually worth something.

Also,  I constantly receive cash back offers, including travel companies.   I get ten percent cash back offers all the time from Crystal cruises, max $450.  It is per card, we have individual accounts.   Travel insurance is per account as well.

I would not mix and match credit cards, gift cards.

I see nothing wrong with buying gift cards using AMEX.

I also have this card.(Great minds think alike.)  Do you know if the bonus points work if you use the Kroger website to buy gift cards?  I just wonder if the charge is the same whether you buy the card in person vs online.

Good question, and I don't know the answer.  Which then makes me wonder if you get the extra points when you order groceries online from Kroger?  There are quirks to the program.  For instance, my card gives me extra pts. at gas stations, but not gas stations associated with a store such as Kroger, Walmart, etc.

Yesterday I bought $1,150 worth of Carnival gift cards at Kroger with my Hilton AMEX and earned over 7,000 Hilton Honors points! 😮  I'm trying to accumulate enough points to stay in Amsterdam for a week or more.

And I just redeemed 20,000 Amex points for a $200 carnival CORP card that is good on ALL I have the cruise lines under the Carnival Corporation, including Holland America, using my Amex blue. Maybe your purchase is doing double duty - earning you amex points as well. Check your amex rewards. You might be earning Amex reward points and kroger fuel points at the same time, which is even better!

My card only gives me Hilton Honors points.

It appears that Holland America Gift Cards are available through amazon.com -- but only to a maximum of $100 per card.

The ones on display at Kroger are $25 (I think) to $500.  You put in the amt. you want after you've scanned the bar code.  I wonder why Amazon limits them to $100?

I wondered that myself.  They show cards in increments of $25 up to $100.  But it looks like you can order multiple cards at one time, so it doesn't really make sense to limit the denomination.  But I did not buy, so I might be wrong about multiple cards.  I'm just so used to buying almost everything at Amazon that I had to look ;-)

If you can't buy multiple cards, and you're limited to $100 and under, the only thing you could use them for would be your onboard acct., or as a stocking stuffer. 🎄

Just saw the H.A. gift cards on Amazon, too.  Another little savings is to pay for the cards using the Chase Amazon Prime cc, and get 5% back.

If you have a Discover card, you can activate 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in Amazon purchases (also Walmart.com and Target.com) through Dec. 31. So a $100 HAL card would cost you $95. Hey, little victories....

So if you get a gift card, how is it applied to your OBC or cruise or whatever you use it for?

If I use the cards to pay for my cruise, I email my TA the card #, PIN, and amt.  To put it toward my onboard acct., I go to the front desk and give them the card.  I don't know if you can use the gift cards to pre-purchase shorex, specialty dining, etc.
