A shirt can be both rude and hilarious at the same time.  It's about respect for others; something many Millennials have apparently not been taught.  What is appropriate in a small gathering of friends who know each other well is not necessarily appropriate on a ship with children and those more conservative.

And porn is for losers.  It's not difficult to define.

I know some people are giving you grief for your post but I see you are from the PNW.  I just recently moved to this area and I am appalled on a daily basis by what people try to pass off as public wear around here.  I took a cruise out of Seattle in September and unfortunately, it was easy to tell who the locals were.  Sad.  🙁

Years ago on a Holland America Ship as a young couple we were cruising throught the Panama Canal and enjoying it out in the main deck (dont let people out there anymore I think) as a table with a sun umbrella.  It was a bit gusty that day and a sudden gust lifted the umbrella out from the middle of our table, up in the air and into the Panama Canal, where it promptly sank. The 4 of us at the table just looked at each other, stunned then ran to the rail to see the umbrella sink under the water.

Agreed, I think the family should be made to pay for the clean up of the hot tub at least.

The kid should have been thrown overboard then his father should have followed.

And yet, for me, it is usually not what is on the shirt but who is in it (or not in one at all) that often offends me.

Am I reading this right? People really do get offended by what's written on a shirt?

I am with you. It's not the shirt it's the person.sometimes an apparent offensive shirt could be just someone's sense of humour being a bit different.

I have some hugely offensive tee shirts. Well they are for some. For others they would be hilarious.

It's all in the best possible taste.

Darren - did you see the tee shirt in question ? (It's been deleted now) . I'm not sure how anyone could find it hilarious.

No I didnt. But I suspect I would not have found it hilarious but I suspect it wouldn't have offended me either. Lifes too short to be offended by stuff like that or bad language.

Always amuses me during televised sporting events when one of the players is heard to swear through one of the pitch side microphones. And the commentator immediately apologises if anyone heard anything they shouldn't.

I mean. Hold the front page. Professional sports people swear during competing.

And yet it seems there are some get offended by this.

I think the difference is that sideline or incidental cursing is meant to be part of the conversation. There are times and places when it's widely accepted and others where it isn't. IMHO, the T-shirt in question was clearly both designed and worn in an effort to offend. I think most would agree that there is a significant difference between incidental and intentional offense.

I agree, and it's not just about the verbiage of the shirt, but the fact someone would pack it and wear it in an atmosphere that is supposed to be somewhat upscale.  If memory serves me right, the pic was from a Holland America cruise, which is generally an older, more refined crowd.  I'm not saying the shirt is appropriate for any cruise line, like Carnival, but I think it's that much more offensive when worn on a line that is of a higher classification.  When people act in that matter, it just cheapens the experience. And yes, I'm sure that person was deliberately trying to be offensive.

Trash isn't just the garbage intended for the waste bins. Its also the 2 legged variety that can be found just about anywhere, including cruise ships. And it's not limited by income.

I guess there might be a difference recognizing rudeness or bad manners and being offended.  Most of the time disgusting behavior gets little more than a head shake from me.

I agree. And I am not saying I condone such behaviour. I dont.

And i trust i have brought my kids up to never behave like that.

But it still doesn't offend me if I hear bad language or see an offensive tee shirt. Sometimes bad language can be very funny.

Like Ricky Gervais st the golden globes.

Like Ricky Gervais st the golden globes.

But walking around a family ship with a tee shirt emblazoned with four letter words. How is that acceptable?  You cannot compare it to RG swearing in front of an adult audience.

What word was it?

Just imagine what you might say to someone on the road who cuts you off and almost causes a crash.  It was like that.  Directed and insulting.  It wasn't anything innocent like "(darn) good food."

I LOVED that Ricky Gervais speech, by the way.

Yes, context matters. The Golden Globe audience expects certain language and behavior from RG. Indeed, that's literally why he keeps getting the job. He's a funny guy. My young adult kids know that certain liberties with language are fine when it' s just us, but when Grandma or my cousin's young twins come to visit, they need to tone it down. What's okay when we are playing Cards Against Humanity at the kitchen table is not okay when eating at a family restaurant.

The intent of the shirt in question was to offend, and to garner attention. It has certainly done just that.

Yes, I should have mentioned that people can choose whether or not to take the bait and be offended.

Again, it's a matter of context. There are a few contexts where it might be okay, even welcomed. The buffet line of a family cruise ship is not one of those contexts.
