What does that have to BOARDING?

The OP asked about BOARDING.

Hahah. There are lots of posts about best side of the ship.   I think Ed01106 simply jumped too fast and  didn't catch this was about boarding.   No harm done.

I think I would as well! I suppose it is what you are used too?

I was in Bamburgh (just up the road) the other month and a Freddy Olsen cruise ship - Balmoral I believe- came for a close look at Bamburgh Castle. He came on the inside of the Farne Islands!

I thought “What if” ....

We took a cruise out to the islands from Seahouses back in 2017 so have a vague idea of the clearances. From the chartlet there's lots of water, so provided the inside route was included in the voyage plan and ship was fully operational, I wouldn't have a problem heading through that passage.

Routinely passed through narrow channels with < 2 cables clearance on each side.

Excuse my ignorance here, but I actually said the my wife on our cruise, that I much prefer when dock the left, as our cabn was on the left.

I had no idea about port and starboard. Does this make me a bad person?

So where do these names come from?

From boats of old that had a stearing board on one side, the right, (a bit like a giant oar) and thus only the other side could pull up to Port

When we had our sail boat, people not used to boats would ask this.

At some point, they would be forward, looking back at me, and I would yell, LOOK LEFT.  And of course, they look to THEIR left.  Then I ask, see why we use Port and Starboard? 😄

Most got it.

I suspect Captain Tasos Kafetzis on Celebrity Solstice would execute that manoeuvre perfectly. Anyone who can turn a cruise ship 360 degrees this close to the side of a fjord would have no problems docking like that.

Captain Tasos   he is a genius - Out.

Most cruises makes little difference.

But the answer is specific to a specific cruise.  There is no general answer.

Yes there is the dock is always portside on the ship although sometimes it may be on the starboard side and sometimes on the port side.

No, I never lost anyone overboard.  And also never smacked someone with the boom.

And yes, were did race. 😄

I suppose the threat of ending up in the water would be enough.

It depends on when and what time of year.

We did a sailing class in the same boat as we had.  Met a couple that also owned one in Montreal.  A year or so later, we were in Montreal.  The wife was busy on Sunday and I was not, so I crewed for our friends.  They put my on foredeck.  At one point, I was holding the uphaul for the pole, and me feet were on the wrong side of the lifeline.

I did NOT want to go into the water in Montreal in early May. 😄
