Prinsendam's conversion into Amera

$1000 a day for the Prinsendam. In American money???

I have land to sell, please call me.

This was a chopped up aging ship, I didn’t feel the charm over 14 days on board and we were not in bargain accommodations.  Got tired of stuffing wash cloths in between dresser drawers to stop rattling.  We were never able to stop a pocket door from rattling.  Got tired of the AC going out every day.  Got tired of the musty odor we had in the stateroom.  Got tired of the tremendous volume of stinky cigarette smoke permeating the library and other public areas.  Never got used to the chopped up traffic flow, we had to walk through a dining room over and over to get places.  Some doors from the promenade deck led into the dishwashing area of the kitchen, then you had to walk through the cooking area and into a dining room to get out.

The decor was dated and a little tacky with hundreds of port plaques covering wall space.  There was very little outdoor shade, pool side chairs were cheap mesh and plastic and in full sun.  We paid for every bottled water we drank- even Fairfield Inn type places provide a couple free water bottles.

Food is subjective but we thought it was standard for the fleet.

My best guess about why the Prinsendam was unloaded instead of being refurbished lies at the very bottom right hand corner of a spreadsheet.

I doubt many would disagree with you.  HAL mad e chsnged to her when she joined the fleet.    She was  'aged' then .

Is the small prop in the center of the stern a thruster?

Yes Sir, good eye! In addition to two four-bladed bow thrusters up front, P-dam, soon to be Amera, has one 360 degrees rotatable stern compass thruster and that's what you're looking at (the third smaller propeller) located in between and above her twin four-bladed controllable pitch propellers in those two pics

Here are some more pics for you.

The article is in German but the pictures tell the story.  Lots of good pics and you can see a lot of progress.  I can see they have preserved the wood in the staterooms 🙂

I’m not quite getting the picture of her lido. Did they fill in the pool with glass?

It is slated to remain a pool; perhaps a different shape than the "small hole/large hole" pool on P-dam

She’s looking very bright and shiny!

Phoenix Reisen standard colors of white overall with a turquoise cheatline and stack imprinted with a white flying albatross on a golden sun which will give her that classy look

It looks like it will have a pool but not the same. Some more pics from Phoenix Amadeus’ newsletter:

I read somewhere that there would not be a huge emphasis on the pool but I can’t remember where I saw that, sorry.

Great photo of the horizontal fin there, John! Seldom see it stretched out as it's always under the waterline.

I'd like to think that if they run out of fuel, it can become an oar and row the boat... 🙂

Then you need these guys to keep 'em rowing together :classic_wink:

John, that picture of the Albatros looks like an old Sitmar Line ship. Fairwind maybe?

Great eyes, Sir! She started out as Cunard's Sylvania in 1957. Then became Sitmar's Fairwind in 1968. When P&O took over Sitmar, she became Dawn Princess for Princess in 1988. Dawn Princess became Albatross under charter to Phoenix Reisen in 1993 under which she experienced several mechanical issues. She was ultimately broken up at Alang, India in 2004.

Phoenix currently operates another Albatross which is the former Royal Viking Line's Royal Viking Sea, Royal Cruise Line's Royal Odyssey, NCL's Norwegian Star and Chinese day casino ship Crown

I have to laugh when people use the words strategy and HAL in the same sentence.  Based on what I observe, HAL’s strategy is constant change. Pretty soon the CD/EXC person will also have to do laundry and Captain the ship 😳.  HAL is on the fast track to become Carnival 2.0.  We have already started our exodus by booking the Oceania 2021 WC instead of HAL’s.

I believe that HAL has a strategy.  Spend as little as possible on aging ship maintenance/upkeep  and position/sell this to your loyal following as premium,  nostalgia, experience, atmosphere, whatever.

Unload the ship when it is clear that the end is near without a large capital spend.

In the interim move to larger builds and hope that the new generation of cruisers will be as loyal as the last generation.
