Anthem of the Seas - Review - Bermuda & Caribbean - June 20, 2019 - June 29, 2019

June 2019 - Anthem of the Seas - 9 Night Bermuda and Caribbean

Who are we?

Noreen - 51 years old; Senior Vice President at an Investment Banking Firm in New York City.  I will be the author of the report.

Scott - 49 years old (turning 50 on this trip); Independent Contractor and Co-Owner of BounceU in NY.

General Comments...

I am doing most of this from memory and by looking through my pictures.  I sent myself a few texts throughout the trip to help me remember.  I like detailed reviews with a lot of information that many people may not care about.  I write reviews like a travelogue that I can go back and enjoy.  I took pictures throughout but have more pictures of food than anything else since it’s easier to remember to take a picture while you are sitting down eating than when you are busy having fun.

We have been on Anthem several times so won’t do many of the things people on the ship do since we probably did them on a prior trip.  We are not lay out by the pool all day people so won’t know if there were a lot of chair hogs.  We enjoy the casino and spend time most evenings there.  We are pretty easy going and don’t let little things bother us.  We always have fun, especially on vacation.

Planning

I am one year and two months older than Scott.  In April 2018 we celebrated my 50th birthday on Celebrity Reflection in a Royal Suite on an 11 night cruise to the Southern Caribbean.  Growing up birthdays were always a big deal in my family.  For a big birthday I knew I wanted to be somewhere fun.

Scott isn’t a birthday fan but I started asking him where he wanted to celebrate his 50th birthday even before we went on mine last year just to get him thinking about it.

We originally thought about a cruise to Alaska since his birthday is in the right month for that.  We debated doing back to back (Northbound and Southbound) vs time on land in Alaska and cruising southbound.  We aren’t fans of organized tours so would have done the land portion on our own.

We also talked about possibly going on either Harmony or Symphony (either ship back to back eastern and western as long as we could get the same cabin for both legs).  The itineraries aren’t that exciting so we decided against it.

We were out to dinner in July 2018 talking some more about the plans and leaning towards Alaska with the land tour on our own first then cruising southbound.

Scott tossed out the idea of sailing on Anthem.  He loves sailing on Anthem having sailed several times on her.  It’s very convenient leaving from Bayonne NJ which is maybe an hour drive from home.  There is a 9 night sailing that includes his birthday and goes to Bermuda and the Caribbean (St Maarten, Puerto Rico, and Labadee).

I was worried Scott would feel shortchanged if we sail on a ship we’ve been on before and not do something new/different.

He said he still wants to do Alaska but not for his birthday.  He would prefer doing it another time when we aren’t locked into a specific week(s) since I wanted to be away on his actual birthday.

We talked about booking a star class/genie suite since that will be something different and somewhat similar to my birthday sailing (which was amazing).  I started looking at the Anthem sailing and the only star class suite available is a Grand Loft Suite.

I called Brenda, my friend and travel agent, the next morning and she got us booked in Grand Loft Suite #8724.  There were only two Grand Loft Suites available.

Imagine our surprise when we did a bit more research about the cabin and noticed there is no bathtub.  I know that’s not a big deal to many but we enjoy taking a bath.  Our usual routine when we were on Celebrity was to come back from the gym and take a bath, then take a shower to get ready for the day.  We also used the jacuzzi on the balcony that many say is a waste of space almost every day.  Even at home (on the weekend when we have a bit more time) I often will take a bath after the gym before jumping in the shower.  Scott will squeeze in baths at home more frequently than I do.

We also looked at an Owner’s Suite since that has a separate tub and shower (the ideal combination) but you lose the Star Class perks that we really want to try.

We were put on a waitlist for the Owner’s Loft Suite (Star Class) but that cabin also doesn’t have a bathtub.  I was thinking of doing the wait list for the Royal Loft Suite (you can only do one waitlist) but since it looks like there is only 1 of those it’s less likely to become available and maybe there is a better shot at getting the Owner’s Loft Suite.

In February 2019 Scott and I were on Anthem for a 12 night cruise to the Caribbean (I did a review for that trip too) and I showed Scott where the Grand Loft Suite is located.  As the cruise went on, he kept mentioning that he didn’t like that the cabin was all the way at the back of the ship, he prefers being located near the elevators in the middle.  He reminded me that every morning when we go to the gym we’ll have to go all the way from the back of the ship to the front. He mentioned again the lack of the bathtub.

By the end of the February cruise he decided he didn’t want to sail in the Grand Loft Suite.  He would rather we do a Star class suite when we’re on a ship we haven’t been on so often where we’ll use the perks more as well as finding a Star Class cabin that’s midship (if possible) with a bathtub.

When we got home from that sailing we looked at some more YouTube videos of the different types of suites to see which one he wanted and what was available.  He wanted to try the Spa Junior Suite.  He liked the idea of the split bathrooms (one with a shower and tub) and the location right in the middle of the ship.  I was surprised he didn’t want to do an Owner’s Suite since those were midship and had the separate tub and shower stall too.

I called Brenda and we were able to switch to a Spa Junior Suite (I think they are now called a J4) #7638.

In early March 2019 Scott and I were talking about his birthday cruise again and the spa junior suite not having the big balcony he really liked from the J1 (Junior Suite with Large Balcony) that we had in February.  He wants to switch to a J1 but unfortunately, none were available.

Mid March I was poking around and it looked like there was one available.  When I clicked on it to see the cabin number nothing happened but I texted Brenda to see if she could check for me.   She was able to get us moved and we are now in a J1 (Junior Suite with Large Balcony) - cabin # 10232.

That’s 3 cabin changes already.

On April 6, I received a Royal Up email.  I was able to bid on a Grand Suite, Owners Suite, and Sky Loft Suite.  I bid on both the Grand Suite and Owner’s Suite.  I did not bid on the Sky Loft since it doesn’t have a bathtub.

Dining/Beverage Packages

When we were booked in the Star Class cabin all specialty dining is included and the genie would make reservations for us.  The ultimate beverage package is also included.

Once we moved out of Star Class, I purchased the refreshment package for both of us on sale for $20/day per person on 2/23/19.  We buy the refreshment package on most cruises as it works well for us since it includes bottled water, soda, specialty coffees, fresh squeezed orange juice, etc.

I’m a lightweight when it comes to drinking alcohol.  On vacation maybe I’ll have 1 drink a night.  We are Diamond Plus so if I wanted a drink during cocktail hours I could have an included drink then.  We also get free drinks in the casino being Prime so we could also have drinks there too.  Scott can drink more alcohol than I do, but he mainly would have a few drinks in the casino so that would be covered already.  If there was a drink we wanted outside the casino or outside cocktail hour we would just purchase it.  We know we would not drink enough to make an alcohol package worth it for us.

We have tried the various specialty restaurants in the past and enjoy them.  We really enjoy Coastal Kitchen as well.  I asked Scott what specialty restaurants he wanted to go to on this trip. And where he wanted to go on his actual birthday.   Since he isn’t a birthday fan we’ll keep it low key and not have the waiters sing to him.  We thought about Chops since we usually enjoy eating there each trip.  Scott decided he would rather we eat in Coastal Kitchen since we end up having the same waiter who gets to know us and we enjoy that.  If we decide we want to go to a specialty restaurant while we’re on the trip we’ll see if we can book something then.

Entertainment

Once we moved out of Star Class (where the Internet package is included) I purchased the Voom Surf & Stream 2 device package on sale for $20.99/day on 2/23/19.

I booked the various shows - We Will Rock You, The Gift, and Spectre’s Cabaret.  We have seen them all already so it’s not a high priority for us but I like to book them in case we decide to go.

Excursions/Ports

We are not fans of organized excursions.  We prefer the flexibility to go at our own pace and do what we want.  We had a good time at different beaches snorkeling and swimming on our last few cruises.

Bermuda - We will probably go back to Horseshoe Bay Beach as we enjoyed it last time.

St Maarten - We are deciding between Holland House at Great Bay Beach (? I think that is what it’s called, the one near town that you can see the ships from) or Orient Beach (either Bikini Beach or Kontiki Beach).  We haven’t gone to these beaches on prior trips to enjoy a beach day.  We’ve walked along the beach by the town and stopped at Orient Beach before the Hurricane’s one year but didn’t stay to enjoy the beach.  We will definitely get some chocolates at the Belgium Chocolate Shoppe (the little one at the pier is fine).

Puerto Rico - We will probably just wander around Old San Juan

Labadee - A beach day on the private island.  Last time on Labadee we stopped at a beach pretty close to the pier and it was very rocky.  This time I want to head over towards Columbus Cove

The week before the trip

We did our pre-vacation fashion show where we try on different things we want to bring and model them for each other.  Of course we end up doing some more online shopping with rush delivery after that since we always need (or want) a few more things to bring.

I ordered several birthday gifts for Scott and the majority have arrived and are wrapped.  I have some that I’ll give him after the cruise even though it’s after his birthday but it doesn’t make sense to lug some of the heavier packages that he wouldn’t use on the trip anyway.  I have a few things to give him on his actual birthday while on the cruise.  I also ordered a few things that I will  give him pre-cruise.

One pre-cruise gift was a new snorkel set since he mentioned his old one leaked the last time he used it.  We enjoy snorkeling but don’t do it as much as many others do and are fine with our basic snorkel gear that we ordered on Amazon.  I know it’s not as good as professionally fitted at a dive shop but for the amount we use it, it is fine.  I received an email Friday 6/14 that the snorkel set was delivered.  I looked on the porch and didn’t see it.  I checked the ring app (where you can see people/animals/etc at your door) since I often will see the FedEx or UPS driver drop packages but didn’t see anything Friday.  If it was left with a neighbor they would have dropped it off.  On the Amazon site it said to give it 36 hours since sometimes it says delivered but it is about to be.  I waited until Tuesday and still nothing.  I used the chat feature on Amazon to let them know that I don’t have the package yet.  They were great.  They said they would process a refund and it was probably the driver’s fault (rather than the seller).  I need to re-order the item if I still want it.  I will do that but am disappointed that Scott won’t have his new snorkel gear for this trip.

The day before the trip - Wednesday 6/19/19

It was a busy day at work with a lot of meetings.  I worked remotely (from home) this day and that was great since I didn’t have to commute home from the city after work.

When I finished work, I went to the spa to get a manicure and pedicure.  I got a regular pedicure in a blue that reminds me of the water in Barbados.  On my fingers I did a shellac/gel manicure in a sparkly peach so it will last throughout the trip.

We received emails that our Royal Up bids were unsuccessful.

We finished packing tonight.

Thursday 6/20/19 - Embark - Bayonne NJ

It was a pretty normal morning (kind of like a weekend morning actually).  We worked out, took a bath, then got ourselves showered and dressed.

We didn’t have breakfast thinking we would try leaving a little earlier than we originally planned.

I took a picture of the luggage before we loaded up the car.  I know we both overpack, but we had one less bag than we did in February for the 12 night cruise.  This time we had 3 big suitcases, 1 garment bag, and 2 rolling carry-on bags.

We left the house around 10:30.  There wasn’t much traffic and we got to Bayonne about 11:30.

There were some cars lined up to pull in to drop luggage but not as bad as last time.  The first sight of the ship is always exciting no matter how many times we’ve been on Anthem and regardless of the weather.

We dropped our luggage with the porters and pulled into the garage to park.  We ended up near the top floor.  Not outside but almost.  I was surprised the garage was so full already since we got here a little earlier than we normally would.

I took a picture of the sign where we parked in the garage so we’ll remember where to find the car when we get back.

Check in was quick.

We stopped for the boarding photo as we always do.  We started hanging them on the wall in the living room at home.  This is a picture of it on a table before we put it in a frame and hung it on the wall.

We were on the ship by 12:15.

Thursday 6/20/19 - Continued

The elevators were crowded so we walked up the stairs.  Scott carried both carry-on bags.

Our first stop was Coastal Kitchen where we made reservations for dinner each night at 7pm, with the exception of tomorrow for 6:30 since we have The Gift.  When making our reservations we saw Rueben (I think he’s the Coastal Kitchen manager among other food areas) and he remembered us from February so came over to hug us and say hello.

We went in the Windjammer to have lunch since we skipped breakfast this morning.

We walked around the pool deck a bit but it was raining so didn’t stay out too long.

We walked down to the 10th floor just after 1.  There were a decent amount of people waiting for the cabins to open.  There was a sign on the door to the hallway that said the cabins would be available by 1:30.

We chatted with some of the other people and just hung out waiting.

At about 1:20 the doors were opened to the hallways for the cabins and we headed over.

We like the layout of this cabin type.  The balcony is great with comfortable lounge chairs.

I don’t think they were finished getting the cabins ready since a lot of our things that normally are there when we get there weren’t.  We were missing our WOW bands, the diamond plus water and soda, the cups for the refreshment package were missing their straws and the letter about the package.  The shelf in the refrigerator was missing half of it so you wouldn’t be able to use it the way it was.  I know it will all be sorted out but was surprised since usually it’s all done before we get to the cabin.

The document about the Voom Surf & Stream package, the Diamond Plus letter, the Compass, and some other things were already there.

Thursday 6/20/19 - Continued

I looked out in the hallway and saw several people walking by with their luggage.  Someone mentioned there was a lot of luggage down the hall so I took a walk and there it was.  I started walking back with 2 of the bags.  Scott came out to help bring the bags to our cabin.

We started unpacking.  Since we had this same type of cabin in February (but the reverse on the other side of the ship) we pretty much knew where we wanted to put things.

Keisha, our room steward, stopped by to introduce herself.  She asked if everything was OK with the room so we told her about the missing items and the broken shelf in the refrigerator.  She told us she noticed the WOW bands missing and was waiting for an answer on them but would take care of the other things.

We asked if she could get rid of the coffee pot since we won’t use it and would prefer having the counter space.

We also told her we don’t want the robes (they weren’t there anyway).  I know many people like them but we won’t use them so told her not to bother getting them for us.

Muster Drill was at 3:30.  Our station was in the dining room.

We stopped at the Patisserie; Scott had a Cappuccino and I had a bottle of water.  Scott asked the barista to pick his favorite macaroon flavor and he gave us pistachio.  It was really good.  Probably the best macaroon I’ve had in a really long time.

6F28FB98-E952-40D3-BEEB-31004B692013.jpeg

We went up to the top deck to watch sailaway.  It was raining.  There was only a handful of people outside but we wanted to get a picture going under the Verrazano Bridge.  Poor Scott was trying not to squint while getting rained on.

We went back to the cabin to finish unpacking.  It was storming outside with lightening.  It was nice to watch from the balcony where we could stay dry.

We stopped at Guest Services to get our WOW bands as Keisha advised (she stopped by while we were unpacking).  They were out of bands with our muster station on it which is why we didn’t receive them in the cabin.  I asked if they could just give us different ones instead.  They did and wrote our muster station number in marker on the band.

We stopped at the casino to get my prime sticker on my seapass card.  Scott’s was already pre-printed on his card.  The same thing happened on our cruise in February.

We had a drink at the casino bar.  I had a mango mojito and Scott had a martini.

We walked back outside on the pool deck and it was still empty with nets covering the pools.  The rain stopped for a little while.

Thank you.  I enjoy writing them.  It’s a great way to relive the trip.

I grew up in Brooklyn, NY but moved to Bergen County NJ as an adult.  We’re in River Vale.

I agree, we love Anthem.  Have a great time in October.

Thursday 6/20/19 - Continued

We went to dinner at Coastal Kitchen.  We didn’t change for dinner tonight but stayed in our casual clothes.  Many people were not dressed up tonight which is pretty common the first night.  Our waiter is Amar.

There is an always available side to the menu.  I’ll post that here but won’t re-post it each night.

The other side of the menu changes daily.

We were brought bread with various spreads.

For appetizers I had the Burrata.  Scott had the cured salmon and shrimp cocktail.

We saw a nice sunset as we were finishing dinner.

We enjoy Coastal Kitchen and realized that we pretty much order the same first night meal each time.

There was a funny picture of an owl in the elevator.  I am happy to see the funny animal pictures back.  When we were on Anthem in February they weren’t there.  There are different pictures in different elevators.

We went to the Welcome Aboard show with Tom Foss at 8:30 in the theater.  He was very funny and we’re looking forward to seeing his late night comedy show tomorrow.

We saw another funny animal picture in the elevator - a Flamingo.

We went to the casino until about 1am.

Back in the cabin, Scott was hungry so we ordered room service.  A hot dog, a quesadilla, grilled cheese, and chocolate chip cookies.  We enjoyed our late night snack.

There were new cups with straws in the cabin.  Keisha replaced the old ones with these.  I was a bit surprised that they don’t come shrink wrapped like the older ones did.

We move our clocks ahead an hour tonight

I forgot to mention that when we first got in the cabin this afternoon, Scott wiped all the surfaces down with Clorox wipes.  I know the cabins are cleaned but it makes us feel better to take that extra step.  We always pack the Clorox wipes in his carry on.

Hi Noreen,

Great review, as always 🙂

How do you like the “entry” to your cabin? It is very different. Also, you cabin provided no forward view, right?

We are in a J4 junior suite for our back to back, leaving 8/29/19. Our room is on deck 13, eeks! That is the only deck where we would not need to change cabins during the B2B. We have already been in a J4 when we sailed this past May, and have sailed on Anthem 9 times already.

Your cabin looks huge next to the J4, but I’m not sure I would like the cabin entry, or the somewhat limited view. I love the view from the J4 balconies. Just wish we were not on deck 13. Wish me luck!

Noreen,  thanks for doing this review. Even though we did the same itinerary in May, I love reliving through your review.

we don’t put anything out until I have cloroxed the cabin 😂.  Not sure if it helps but it’s a cruising ritual.

Hi.

Thank you - I enjoy writing them.

The entry is a non-issue.  I was concerned about it the first time we booked one of these cabins.  There is a shared vestibule but the outer door remains open so the door to the cabin just seems a bit set back from the hallway.

The view is great.  The cabin is at the corner of the hump so you can see straight out or forward.  I think I have a picture when we were looking forward from the balcony.

That’s awesome that you are doing a B2B.  I’ve never done that before but hopefully will get the chance to.  I agree on the not changing cabins part.  I know many say it’s easy but given how much we overpack, I’d rather just get settled in once and not have to move.

I’m sure Deck 13 will be fine, unless you are superstitious.  You are already lucky to be on a great ship for 2 weeks.

Glad you are enjoying it.  It’s fun to write them.

So we aren’t the only germaphobes out there.  Glad to hear others do the same.

Friday 6/21/19 - At Sea

I went to the gym a little after they opened around 6:15.  Scott slept in this morning and would go to the gym a little later.  I was pleasantly surprised to see it was pretty empty in the gym.

After the gym, I stopped at the Patisserie for an iced white mocha (no whipped cream) and 2 bottles of water.  It was surprisingly empty here too.  I asked the barista where everyone is and he said it will probably get crowded after 9.  We’re not used to cruising this time of year.  When we cruise in February, everything is busy in the morning.

I went back to the cabin to shower and get dressed.  Scott was all ready.

We went to the dining room for breakfast.  It’s nice how they have it set up with a small buffet area  as well as a regular menu to order from.

We got some fruit from the buffet.

Scott had pancakes with bacon.

I had French toast with sausage.  It was very good.  I would have preferred the berry compote in a little ramekin like the syrup was served since I like to dip, but it was just on the side of the plate so I was able to dip.

We enjoyed breakfast.  We don’t normally eat a big breakfast like this on a regular basis so it’s a treat on vacation.

We walked around a bit taking care of a few errands.  We picked up a few bottles of water.  We picked up beach towels for Bermuda tomorrow.  We went back to the cabin and packed the beach bag for tomorrow.

Scott went to the gym since he didn’t go earlier.

I decorated the cabin with birthday decorations.   Even though his birthday isn’t until 6/27 this way they can stay up the whole trip.  Scott doesn’t like his birthday and would not want anyone to make a big deal about it, but a few decorations I hang will be fine.
