But it's still not RCI's private island which is what it's often referred to as.  It's just private land on a peninsula on a the big island of Hispanola.

No real difference.  Peninsula is walled off from rest of island leaving private compound for Royal.  FREE sandy beaches, FREE beach chairs, FREE food.  All within a short walk from ship.

Peddlers are restricted to native market area.  Easy to avoid.  A bit persistent but recognize that their income for a year is likely less than we pay for a single cruise.

The open vendor area has some over enthusiatic vendors , but inside the air conditioned  store things are fine..and cooler. It's a very nice beach and nature day!

On Coco Cay we felt the vendors were  much more aggressive.....but you can always leave the "shop"

The .worst  ever for us was the walkway to the Leaning Tower in Pisa...really was  a detriment to a great place.... Very aggressive street peddling of  junk by  some undesirable  vendors who have no concept of personal space...Hope they have cleaned this up....

If you think Pisa is bad, have you ever been to a bazaar in Turkey?  Now by any definition including mine they are aggressive.

We went to the market and the locals were NOT aggressive.  Very friendly and easy to deal with them.  We walked the property and we saw no guards with guns.  We enjoyed our time there.

The armed guards are up by the entrance to the zip line. No passenger would (or could?) have any reason to make it up there without being escorted by the cruise line. We had a mother/daughter duo nearly have a panic attack on the way up. The locals encountered on the ride up could definitely come off as intimidating.
