Jenn1974 Posted August 7, 2019 #1 Share Posted August 7, 2019 Hi. My mom and I are doing a side to side cruise later this month. Our plan is to leisurely get off the Liberty and then give our luggage to the porters for the elation. I have looked and they will be moored (docked not sure the proper term) really close to each other at adjacent terminals. What is the latest you have gotten off the ship? My mom needs wheel chair assistance if that makes any difference. My next question is what is the earliest you can give your luggage to the porters for the next cruise with out fear of it getting misplaced? My next question is about wine. Is it possible to take wine for both cruises when I board the first cruise if I can show my boarding pass for the second cruise. These particular cruises are out of Canaveral? I have heard conflicting answers to this question. I am hoping to not have to take an uber to the Pub lix to get wine before we board the Elation. Garth2 Posted August 7, 2019 #2 Share Posted August 7, 2019 We did this at Port Canaveral. Tell Carnival what you're doing before you leave and confirm it with guest services after you board. Along with another couple we personally escorted off the ship, after all of the passengers, and walked over to the other ship where we were among the first to board. I would skip the ride to save a few bucks on the wine and enjoy the VIP treatment to its fullest.
chocolate melting cake Posted August 7, 2019 #3 Share Posted August 7, 2019 I'd call Carnival and ask----if not, bring the extra wine anyway, it would be confiscated and held for you till you disembark. We're doing a (side to back?) in January. We get off the Panorama, walk to the next "dock" and board the Queen Mary (now a hotel), stay overnight, next morning we'll walk back to the Carnival dock and board the Imagination! Green4me Posted August 7, 2019 #6 Share Posted August 7, 2019 How cool, side to side, that's a new one to me, 🙂 I agree with not going to publics, too much local traffic to deal with plus port security. I'd risk bring the extra wine bottles as suggested above to have them hold and you claim the next day. Not knowing your itinerary, you could also buy two bottles of wine in a port on the first trip, let them check and pick up on debarkation. Have a great Cruise, Bob
atj1971 Posted August 7, 2019 #7 Share Posted August 7, 2019 Just an idea but could you take your normal 2 bottles on the first cruise, buy 2 more while on your cruise and then use those as your 2 allowed bottles for the Elation?
Wheels87 Posted August 11, 2019 #8 Share Posted August 11, 2019 I have gotten off of the ship as late as 0950 with people still behind me. I have dropped off luggage with porters as early as 0945. You should be OK. The best side by side I've done was not quite that, but, I got off the Triumph in New Orleans on a Thursday, drove home (1:20 minute drive), worked Friday, then got back on the Dream on Sunday. That was the easiest work day of my life!
Bases5 Posted August 11, 2019 #9 Share Posted August 11, 2019 We did a (side over side) I'm not sure what to call it. Got off Enchantment of the Seas in Ft Lauderdale and drove north 3 hour to Port Canaveral sailing on the Sensation. I agree I would buy the wine in the first port and have them hold it till the second cruise.

cellfree Posted August 12, 2019 #13 Share Posted August 12, 2019 We have dome two separate Side by Sides - both at Port of Miami - both from MSC to Carnival - loved it - got off ship as late as we could (I suggest this varies from ship to ship) - walked to next ship - dropped luggage with porters - embarked when we could. It worked great. Doing it again in November.

When you say most people you mean most people on Cruise Critic right? this is from an article written on Cruise Critic: Back-to-back cruises are two cruises booked consecutively, whether on the same ship or on different ships. You'll want to let someone at the front desk know you're a back-to-back cruiser during the first part of your trip so arrangements can be made for you during the changeover day between the two sailings. If the porters are collecting luggage for the Elation, it is fine to give them your luggage. Without an ship escort, you need to exit thru one terminal and enter thru the front of the other which makes it a long walk. It does make a difference that your mother needs wheelchair assistance. Talk to GS on the Liberty and they MAY be able to escort you between ships and thru Customs. It is also possible that you will simply need to exit the Liberty, probably no later than 10 am, go thru Customs and take yourself down to the Elation to wait for your arrival time. You are restricted to just taking the wine for one cruise. They only make the exception when you are on a back to back

Quite frankly in 28 years of cruising I’ve never heard of a side by side anywhere but on Cruise Critic. I can’t even find a reference to it on Google.🙁

RWolver672 Posted August 13, 2019 #20 Share Posted August 13, 2019 I did a search and this is what I found: What are "Back to Back Cruises" ("Consecutive Cruises") . The definition says it's a combined voyage consisting of two interlinked sailings on the same ship (with favorable pricing) or on different ships (usually combining different destinations/regions). It simply means taking 2 or more voyages - one right after the other. Now the question arises. Does getting off of a ship one day and getting on another the following day still count as "one right after another"? What defines the timeline "Right after the other"? It appears that the many on here (Cruise Critic) define a B2B as staying on the same ship for two consecutive sailings. One where you leave your luggage on the ship, get escorted off and go through customs, then get escorted back on the same ship. By the way, I tried searching for Side by Side cruises and found nothing. As long as I am on here, I will know what people mean when they say B2B or Side by Side. Seeing how this is the only cruise site I visit, I know what they mean when they use either terminology.

I guess Elaine couldn't find anything to help with her side of the debate so just decided to stop posting. Just saying article is wrong without any evidence to the contrary doesn't make it so. Anyway you are right, at the end of the day we know what they mean when they say side to side. Just a pet peeve of mine, and I have a knee jerk reaction whenever I read about side by sides. Hey I'm not perfect. Happy sailing everyone.🙂
